An Example of Why People Still CyberSquat - Why do people still cybersquat ? That was a question posed a couple of weeks back on Namepros, and while I am not advocating it any way, I am going to give an example of how it still pays off in 2014. PluralSight.in sold on Wednesday for $16,000. The domain was registered in July of 2013, by a gentleman in China who just listed himself as Jeff. No last name, just Jeff. Well just Jeff regged pluralsight.in which has several live trademarks, some before the name was registered and others registered ... read more ...

.Tokyo domain name nears 10,000 registrations - Geo domain has a pretty good first day with nearly 10,000 domain name registrations. .Tokyo launched earlier today and now has 9,598 domain names in the zone file. That means day one adds were near 9,000. This is by far the largest city to launch a new top level domain name so far, and the numbers seem fairly good. One Domain Name Wire reader pointed out that Japanese companies often advertise for people to search for them, not type in their domain name. We’ll have ... read more ...

Comparing home appraisals to domain name appraisals - Appraising homes is easy compared to valuing domain names. Texas doesn’t have an income tax. But the state needs revenue from somewhere, and in Texas that “somewhere” is mostly property taxes. Every year I have to pay about 2.4% of my home’s value in property taxes. This steep rate creates a bit of a dance each year. The counties appraise homes by an automated system, kind of like Estibot. Then you have to argue with the county that the computer-generated ... read more ...

These 10 domain names in this week’s HA auction are value their reserve - These ten domain names strike me as fairly priced for the right buyer. Heritage Auctions holds its next domain name auction on Thursday, July 24. It’s getting quit a bit of press around this auction, thanks in part to the Bitcoins.com domain name. There’s a $750,000 reserve on that one. It will be interesting to see if someone steps up to the plate. Whether or not it sells, the press will shine some light on other good domain names in the auction. Here are ones ... read more ...

There’s no such thing as a reward .Info domain name any more - The market is quickly becoming flooded with acceptable alternatives to .info (and .biz) domains. Sedo is trying to sell some of its own .info domain names in an auction right now, and takers are few and far between. The auction is called the “Premium .info Auction”, and I’ll agree that some of the second level terms are decent: inbox, carwash, slogan, grooming, etc. But why would anyone pay much for these domains? Five years ago I might pay somewhere in the ... read more ...

End users group to .co.uk domain names as second turn .UK names launch - Good .co.uk domain names sell to end users who will be able to claim the matching .uk domains. Sedo sold lots of good .co.uk domain names last week. I suspect this is because of the launch of second level .uk domain names. Owners of .co.uk domain names have first rights on the matching .uk domain name, and there’s been a lot of interest in the UK. You can view previous lists like this here. Domain name auction services should rethink automobile extensions - The current method of preventing bid sniping leads to bidder fatigue. Last Friday GoDaddy sent out a somewhat confusing notice about a change to GoDaddy Auctions and auto extensions. Previously, any bid placed within the last five minutes of an auction extended the clock by five minutes. Now, a bid placed in the last four minutes of an auction will reset the clock to five minutes; a bid placed between the four and five minute marks will increase the clock by one ... read more ...

End users buy relating domains and domain hacks - Many end user domain purchases this past week were for “matching” domains. What strikes me about the latest list of end user domain name sales taking place at Sedo is the number of companies that are buying “matching” domains. They own a ccTLD and want the .com, or they own a .com and want the “hacked” version of a new TLD (e.g. the owner of EnglishClub.com buying English.club.) In some cases the buyers might look at these purchases as defensive plays. ... read more ...
