Tucows Not Liable for Porn Spammer -

Domain name registrars cannot be held responsible for spammers who hide behind Whois privacy services, a California appeals court has ruled.
Plaintiff Daniel L Balsam had won a $1.125 million default judgment against a spammer after receiving over 1,000 pieces of pornographic spam.
Unable to recover the money, he found that the spammer had hidden his identity behind Tucows’ Whois privacy, so he sued the registrar for the cash instead.

Domain Registrar Acquired for $22 Million -

Indom, a medium-sized European domain name registrar, has been bought for €16.9 million ($22 million) in cash.
The buyer is Group NBT, an acquisitive British registrar holding company that already owns NetBenefit, NetNames, Easily.co.uk, Ascio and Envisional.
Indom, founded in 1999 focuses primarily on the French corporate market. It had revenue of €6.6 million ($8.7 million) in 2009, was slightly profitable, and is growing at 18% this ... read more ...

Registrars Defend Domain Name Whois Privacy -

Domain registrars are fighting off critics of Whois privacy on multiple fronts at the ICANN meeting in Cartagena, Colombia this week.
In the latest example, registrars led by Tucows CEO Elliot Noss today savaged an ICANN draft advisory that would hold affiliated privacy services accountable for cybersquatting customers.

Go Daddy’s 2011 Super Bowl Ad Will Promote .Co -

Go Daddy’s 2011 Super Bowl ad is going to have one big difference – it will advertise .co domains.
The registrar has made a deal with .CO Internet to share the cost of the big-money ad – exact terms have not been disclosed – in what will be the biggest marketing deal for .co to date.
The news broke last night at a rooftop party held by the .co registry in Cartagena, Colombia, following the first day of the ICANN public meeting here.

U.S.-based registrar has taken no action against WikiLeaks.org domain name, but is facing pressure from both sides.
Amazon booted Wikileaks from its cloud hosting services. Everydns kicked out the site thanks to distributed denial of service attacks. But the domain name WikiLeaks.org remains in the hands of the underground organization as domain name registrar DynaDot has not taken any action on the domain.

Domain registrar gets patent for social networking dashboard.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. patent number 7840690 to The Go Daddy Group for “Internet portal for managing social websites”.
The patent appears to be related to the company’s SmartSpace web service, which aggregates multiple social networks into a single dashboard.

VentureBeat.com DemandMedia IS Worth $1.4-$1.7 Billion - In a blog post today on VentureBeat.com, Stephen Walker The CEO of Perfectmarket.com chats about DemandMedia’s IPO and concluded:
“I can now envision a scenario wherein Demand Media, whose properties include eHow, LiveStrong.com, and Cracked.com, is worth $1.4 – $1.7 billion. Not bad when you consider that the equity of the New York Times Company is currently valued at $1.2 billion. ”

About 24 hours after promoting .co to the top of its search box, domain name registrar GoDaddy has switched back to .com. But .co remains the second option for people searching for domains at the world’s largest domain name registrar.

Company says .co launch was major contributor to growth on OpenSRS platform.
Yesterday Tucows reported record quarterly revenue for the third quarter. It saw strong growth on its OpenSRS domain reseller platform, and credits .co in part for that growth. Here’s Tucows CEO Elliot Noss on the investor conference call last night:

HostGator to Use LogicBoxes for Its Domain Registrar -
Large web host to use LogicBoxes for domain name registration.
LogicBoxes just picked up a big customer.
The company announced today that web hosting company HostGator will use its back end registrar services. HostGator currently has an ICANN accreditation but is registering domains as a reseller. The transition from reseller to registrar will occur in early 2011, and existing customers and resellers should not experience any impact.

WSJ: Go Daddy No Longer for Sale -
World’s largest domain name registrar supposedly no longer for sale.
The Wall Street Journal, which originally reported that domain name registrar GoDaddy was for sale, is now saying the company is off the market.
The Journal reports that the sales process was cut off last week. A number of private equity companies were in the mix, and the story suggests a sale price of $1.5 billion to $2.0 billion was possible.

Court rules that world’s largest domain name registrar can face a lawsuit in Illinois.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has dealt a blow to domain name registrar Go Daddy, deciding that Go Daddy should face a cybersquatting lawsuit filed by uBid in Illionis.
uBid, which is based in Illinois, sued Go Daddy because some of the registrar’s customers registered typos of uBid.com and these domains were parked with advertisements by Go Daddy.
