Wow: is this a many costly new TLD sale yet? - English.club sells for $17,500. The .Club domain name enters landrush tomorrow, and already the domain name is showing solid early results. Point in fact: English.club sold for $17,500. Given the huge supply of new TLDs hitting the market, solid keywords are selling for a fraction of what the matching .com domain would sell for. So $17,500 is really high. (This is something I’ll talk about on my panel at DomainFest tomorrow.) Add to that TLD Registry’s $181,000 ... read more ...

Cheers! .Wine and .Vin domains prepared to be bottled - Wine domain names can move forward without additional restrictions. The New gTLD Program Committee of ICANN’s board has given the green light for the .wine and .vin top level domain names to move forward without additional restrictions. [Update: put a cork in it! The GAC has apparently found a procedural error that will delay the Board’s decision.] A number of governments, particularly in Europe, were opposed to the delegation of the domain names without added ... read more ...

United Internet holding marketplace share from GoDaddy in new TLDs - After slow start, company is grabbing share in recent TLD launches. United Internet, a group of companies that includes 11, Sedo, InterNetX, and United Domains, appears to be taking a good chunk of the new TLDs market share away from GoDaddy. United spent about $50 million advertising pre-registrations for new top level domain names. Yet GoDaddy was kicking its butt in registrations for the first batches of new TLDs that hit the market. That has shifted in recent ... read more ...

Cleveland Clinic’s .Med focus is alive again - Board Governance Committee to consider if application should move forward. A lot of new top level domain name applicants have filed “Reconsideration Requests” after finding themselves on the losing end of objections. They all have the same story: we were wronged, and we were wronged in a way unique to everyone else who has failed with their reconsideration request. It was the same story I heard from .Med applicant Medistry (backed by Cleveland Clinic) when it ... read more ...

Why Neustar paid $109 million for .Co and what it means for new TLDs - While the circumstances behind Neustar’s acquisition of .CO Internet were unique, it bodes well for operators of new TLDs. Neustar announced yesterday that it is paying $109 million to acquire .CO Internet, operator of the .co domain name. It’s a big price tag, and here’s how it breaks down: * $68 per currently registered .Co domain * 5x current annual revenue run rate * 6.5x current annual revenue run rate when you account for Neustar losing $4 million a year ... read more ...

The Birth Pangs of new tip turn domain names - The launch of new domain names has been anything but smooth. Confusion. Frustration. Incompetence. That’s how I’d sum up the launch of new TLDs so far. I’ve already written about some of the challenges of new TLD launches to date. How they’re coming out with a whimper. How domain name registrars are making it difficult to register these new domain names. Kevin Murphy over at Domain Incite has more examples today in a post titled “Registrars screwing up new ... read more ...

RrSG provides justification to behind adult claims done opposite Minds + Machines - Communication shows that Web.com didn’t receive contract until after reservation program was live. Last month I wrote that ICANN’s Registrar Stakeholder Group (RrSG) was questioning if Top Level Domain Holdings/Minds + Machines’ “Priority Registration System” complied with ICANN contracts. Issues around registry and registrar cross ownership and making sure registries provide equal opportunity to unaffiliated registrars are sure to pop up in coming years. ... read more ...

New Top Level Domain Names still confronting harmony issues - Important software still not recognizing new domain names. Registrants of second level domain names under new TLDs such as .photography and .tattoo are learning firsthand about the issue of Universal Acceptance. The term refers to systems not recognizing new top level domain names for what they are, and thus not being compatible with domain names ending in new monikers such as .holdings. Companies are unprotected to .exposed tip turn domain name - Trademark counsel should pay attention to the latest TLD to enter sunrise. A lot of people have focused on .sucks as an example of a top level domain “shakedown” in which companies will feel compelled to register domains for protective purposes. There’s a similar domain name entering sunrise today that hasn’t received much attention: .exposed. Why we haven’t purebred any new TLDs yet - Between reserved domains, name collisions, premium pricing and awkward domain name registrar interfaces, it’s just a pain in the ass. I’ve written before about how new TLDs are coming out with a whimper. Earlier this week I wrote about my experience trying to register 17 domain ... read more ...

New TLD registries need to forget about morning revenue - New top level domain registries need to scratch the sunrise line item off their PLs. I think many observers are surprised by the low number of trademark sunrise registrations in new top level domain names so far. Calzone, a calendar for new TLD rollouts, has put together some numbers and analysis on sunrise periods so far. The net-net is that sunrises so far have averaged between 100-200 registrations. That’s about 1% of how many sunrise registrations .co received ... read more ...
