Trademark Group Hijacks New TLD Comments -
INTA asks members to submit comments in opposition to Expressions of Interest for new TLDs.
Last month ICANN opened up a comment period on its Draft Expressions of Interest/Pre-Registrations Model (EOI), which I’ve written about before.
I checked in today hoping to see some constructive comments on the EOI draft, such as costs and procedures. Instead, I was greeted with short, terse comments such as:
“I do not support ICANN’s acceptance of pre-registrations ... read more ...

2009 Domain Dunce Award: Parava -
Domain name registrar shuts down, exposing a host of unknown problems.
It wasn’t quite RegisterFly, but the fall of domain name registrar Parava this year was a stark reminder that the domain registration business remains poorly regulated with lax compliance.
ICANN sent a breach notice to Parava on February 27th, notifying it of major infractions including not paying accreditation fees, failing to escrow whois data, and failing to take action in response to invalid ... read more ...

Expressions of Interest for New TLDs Still a Long Wait -
Idea to get data on new TLDs will probably take longer than expected.
If the current draft plan (pdf) for accepting “Expressions of Interest” for new top level domain names is adopted in similar form, ICANN won’t start accepting applications until June 2010 at the earliest.
The delay is because ICANN will shift its planned communications efforts for new TLD applications to promote Expressions of Interest instead. The current proposal for Expressions of Interest ... read more ...

VeriSign Sends You An Early Christmas Present: .Com and .Net Fees To Increase 7% - I Guess VeriSign just sent all of us an early Christmas present.
My registrar just informed me that they received a notice today from VeriSign today that they were raising their fees by 7% on July 1, 2010.
VeriSign fees for .com registrations and renewals will be increasing to $7.34 from its current $6.86 and .Net fees for registrations and renewals will be increased to $4.65 per year.
Don’t forget ICANN’s fee of $.20 (currently) , is in addition to VeriSign’s fees and of course each registrar ... read more ...

ICANN has scheduled a live consultation regarding the new top level domain name registry agreement for Thursday, 7 January 2010. ICANN May Green Light EOIs for New Top Level Domains in February -
Expressions of Interest for new TLDs move forward.
The idea for “Expressions of Interest” for new top level domain names cleared a hurdle last week, as ICANN’s board asked staff to push forward on the idea.
The unofficial minutes from the ICANN board meeting on December 9 explain what will happen next:
Whereas ICANN staff has presented an analysis of the potential benefits of an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process, and has developed a preliminary EOI process ... read more ...

“Much Worse Than The URS”, The Comment Period On The Fast Track UDRP Closes Tomorrow Friday Dec 11 - On November 11th the Czech Arbitration Court (CAC) proposed a quick, cheap, fast track UDRP process.
The ICA says this proposal “is worse than the URS, and a danger to all current Domain name portfolios.”
“Allowing it to be put in effect via Supplemental Rules would be a scandalous travesty.”
By reducing the complaint form to a bare minimum, a very low application fee, and without providing any penalty for losing, this process will encourage parties to “take a shot” to get domains ... read more ...

Arbitrator Asks Good Questions About Expedited UDRP -
Domain name arbitrator asks good questions about Expedited UDRP.
The Hon. Neil Brown, a UDRP domain name arbitrator, has submitted comments to ICANN regarding Czech Arbitration Court’s plans for expedited UDRPs. He actually phrases them as rhetorical questions, but they certainly raise a number of issues. They’re worth reading in their entirety, but here’s a summary:
Can the Expedited Decision proposal be implemented by amendments to the Supplemental Rules ... read more ...

8 TLDs I’ll Express an Interest In -
At $100 a pop, I’d submit an Expression of Interest for a bunch of new top level domain names.
Tomorrow ICANN’s board will consider accepting “expressions of interest” for new top level domains from applicants. On DNW Radio a couple weeks ago, Minds + Machines founder Antony Van Couvering suggested that these expressions of interest require a $55,000 payment. I agree that a substantial fee should be required to make it predictive of actual applications.

Adam Dicker Shutting Down Domain Registrar -
GoDaddy VP no longer using his accredited registrar.
I always thought it was odd that DNForum owner Adam Dicker still owned his own domain name registrar after he took a job as VP at GoDaddy. So when I saw that ICANN was not renewing his accreditation for Domain Jingles, Inc., it gave me a chance to reach out to him.
As it turns out, Dicker moved his domains to GoDaddy a long time ago and hasn’t been actively using his registrar.
In response to an email, Dicker ... read more ...

ICANN CEO Beckstrom’s Monthly Newsletter For Nov is Out - Rob Beckstrom has published his monthly newsletter entitled “The Beckstrom Starfish Report“ for November.
I actually was not aware that the CEO of ICANN had his own monthly newsletter, but I received a copy of it via e-mail this morning.
Beckstrom talks about his first 100 days as president of ICANN, the international oversight of ICANN away from sole US control and the New Top Level domains.

ICANN Asks for Your Feedback on “Expressions of Interest” -
ICANN asks for feedback on Expressions of Interest for new TLDs.
As I’ve reported before, ICANN is exploring accepting “expressions of interest” for new top level domain names. This would allow applicants to put their hat in the ring for new TLDs and give the internet community an idea of the scale and complexity we’re dealing with.
In principle, it sounds like a good idea. The devil will be in the details.
ICANN just opened up a comment period to provide ... read more ...

The ICANN IP Constituency is distancing itself from the Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA).

-Introduction of internationalized domain names
-Security concerns and DNSSEC
-ICANN complying/meeting Affirmation of Commitments

ICANN #36 kicks off in Seoul.
Hundreds of domainers are gathering in New York this week for the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference. It should be a great time and good for business. But the conference that will have a bigger long term impact on domainers’ pocketbooks is going on some 7,000 miles away in Seoul, South Korea.

New gTLD Timeline Slips, Frustration Boils Over in Seoul -

In the opening session on new gTLDs at ICANN’s meeting in Seoul, frustrations boiled over after it became apparent the timeline for introduction of new top level domain names has slipped.
Kurt Pritz, Senior Vice President at ICANN, led the session. The transcript tells an ugly tale. Pritz didn’t talk about specific dates, but basically said things would be slowed down to get it right. One example:

ICANN Web Site Overhaul Moves Forward -
