New TLDs with Donuts' Richard Tindal – DNW Podcast #017 - A discussion about new top level domain names with the biggest new TLD company. In this episode, I chat with Donuts co-founder and COO Richard Tindal. Donuts is the largest new TLD company with over 300 applications and nearly 200 domain names released. Donuts " after such a prolonged run, it’s about time to palm .COM a bullion watch" - Donuts posted a blog post yesterday about looking to the future and that .com is that old stodgy utility that is staid but it is unremarkable. Yet Microsoft had plenty of options for example to register Hololens.newgtld but they still paid to buy the .com and handregister the .us. The article is worth a read, especially for those all in with the new gtlds. The leave a comment link does nothing  and there is no possibility to leave a comment on the post. I believe that .com will lead the future ... read more ...

Will some-more contested TLDs get some-more registrations? - Probably, but quantifying it is difficult at this point. I commonly hear that the best is yet to come in terms of new to level domain name launches. The most heavily contested applications are just getting resolved, and these represent the best top level domain names. It makes sense to me. But will this reflect reality? Are the TLDs we’re seeing so far not representative of the results of future, heavily contested TLD launches? I tried to dig into the data a bit ... read more ...

Donuts and Rightside recover 6 new domains on Wednesday - …And they’re some of the better domains released so far. What we consider about Donuts’ confidant 80% renovation forecast - Last Friday, Donuts CEO Paul Stahura posted on CircleID an argument for strong renewal rates in new top level domain names. He even put a number on it: “…we conservatively predict an initial renewal rate of greater than 80% for Donuts gTLDs.” First of all, kuddos to Donuts for sticking its neck out there with a prediction. It might have its own motivations for doing so, but a lot of TLD registries are backing off of public predictions of any kind after their ... read more ...

Yesterday’s 5 new TLD launches sum about 2,500 registrations - A slow start, but some of these domains have long term potential. Five new top level domain names launched yesterday, and they combined for a total registration base of just 2,500 after the end of the “zone day”. This includes sunrise and landrush, plus the initial hours of general availability. Donuts’ .healthcare ended the day with about 1,400 registrations (all stats from nTLDstats). I’m a bit curious about .healthcare. There’s a growing chorus of concern ... read more ...

Heavenly.coffee is Donuts’ 1 Millionth domain name registration - Donuts hits milestone with a domain name registration that’s almost too fitting to be true. How about some coffee with those Donuts?Earlier this month I wrote about how Donuts was tracking to cross the million domain mark in October. It hit that milestone yesterday. Fittingly for a registry called Donuts, the milestone registration was Heavenly.coffee. Even if every domain was priced at just $15 wholesale, that means the company has grossed $15 million this year. ... read more ...

This is a biggest week nonetheless for new TLDs (16 domains!) - 16 domains hit the market this week. At the end of last month, I wrote about how the next 50 days would be important for new TLDs. Within that 50 days, this week is perhaps the biggest: 16 domain names will enter general availability. Call it Launch Week, and it’s really big for two of the portfolio applicants who launch their first owned-and-operated batches. Let’s get to it. Monday It’s a big day for publicly traded Minds + Machines (LSE: MMX). Last week ... read more ...

This week in new TLDs: $150k/domain? Plus .black, .hiv, and .creditcard - Pull out your .creditcard. Tuesday Following on the lackluster launches of .red, .pink and .blue, Afilias launches .black. .Red is its most successful color domain so far, but it has received fewer than 2,500 registrations. Donuts compelling the TLDs during Vegas conform uncover (photo) - Company goes direct to customers to promote its niche domain names. “If you build it, they will come.” Not if they don’t know you’ve built it! Although there are close to 200 new top level domain names on the market, dozens of them niche domains for particular industries, very few people know about them. I’d bet fewer than 1% of business owners have ever heard of new TLDs, let alone most of the niche extensions. New TLD backers need to get in front of business ... read more ...

Medical domain names all underneath 2,000 registrations after initial day - No surprises in initial launches of four medical-themed domain names. As I previewed earlier this week, the only four domain names entering true general availability this week were medical-themed domains from Donuts. Here are how many domains are registered in each of the four after the first day, based on zone file numbers: .Dental 1,971 .Clinic 1,447 .Care 1,395 .Surgery 536 The numbers are about where I expected them to be. Donuts: 775,000 domain names served - Donuts’ domain name registration base keeps growing. They keep stacking up.Donuts sent out a newsletter today that announced it is up to 775,000 domain name registrations. The mega-registry has released 111 top level domain names in general availability, so that’s an average of roughly 7,000 registrations per TLD.
