Hockey teams possess 9 of 30 NHL group domain names - NHL lags MLB, but teams still own a good number of direct match domain names.
In my book, there’s nothing more exciting and intense in sport than NHL playoff hockey. With the playoffs in full swing, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at which NHL team names domain names are owned by the teams (or the league).
Team names tend to be common words, which makes them more expensive to acquire and difficult for teams to claim trademark rights. Major League Baseball has spent a lot of money ... read more ...

Domain Movers: Blocker.com, MaxGrip.com and More - I can dig and dig the same amount of time that I do every day but that doesn’t mean I always find great domain names moving. This week has been a bit of a downer type week relating to “big” domain movers. I almost always can find several great one word .com domain movers that have been acquired by large companies but in this domain movers list, the big boys are lacking a little.
With that said, there are a lot more domains that are important than just the “eye candy” one word domains. Here ... read more ...
Another feign TLD sighting: .Calm - Corona displays .calm on a billboard. .Calm isn’t a top level domain.
Marketers have long used dots in marketing, making phrases look like domain names. Consider Sony’s make.believe campaign:
Patrick McCleery at Hexonet was strolling around his neighborhood the other day when he came across this Corona ad:
It’s cute and clever. But I have to wonder, as new top level domain names ranging from .apple to .wtf proliferate, will these create a lot of confusion? Presumably, once marketers understand ... read more ...
More Amazon new TLD reg's and Google's peculiar domain names - I don’t understand what Amazon is doing with these new TLDs, and some curious Google domain registrations.
Earlier this week I wrote about Amazon.com’s many generic/descriptive domains registered under new TLDs that it is forwarding to particular pages on its site.
Many of these domains were registered when the TLDs launched but just recently had their whois record switched to reveal Amazon.
I really don’t understand what Amazon.com is up to here. These domains just popped up in my DomainTools ... read more ...

Haynes and Boone has no plans to register its own name defensively with a company that’s marketing “.sucks” as a new Internet domain name suffix.
Moreover, Jeff Becker, a partner in the Dallas-based firm’s home office, has rethought the advice he previously gave corporate clients to register defensively any names associated with their brands with domain-name purveyors.
Why? The proliferation of what’s known as a generic top-level domain names, or gTLDs, including the “.sucks” ... read more ...

$59M and Counting: ICANN Board Downgrades Community Say on Use of Last … -
ICANN's new gTLD program provides for last resort auctions to settle contention sets where the competing applicants are unable to reach agreement by negotiation or private auction, with the proceeds going to a segregated ICANN account. With the recent $25 million bid of Google to secure control of the .App registry the total proceeds of those ICANN auctions has swelled to $58.8 million. The final sum by the end of the first round could go higher, perhaps to more than $100 million. That's serious ... read more ...
