Google’s Not Getting Its Fancy Dotless "Search" Domain - ICANN's loosening up and getting ready to roll out a whole new batch of .whatever generic top-level domains, but Google wanted more. Google was pushing for crazy, dotless domains like http://search. But the dream is over. ICANN just smacked it down. On Friday, ICANN New gTLD Program Committee decided to confirm and all-out ban on domains without dots in them, so http://whatever is off the table as a functional address option, for now. Ideally, http://search wouldn't have just been a shortcut to ... read more ...

Brand Protection Fail: This Weeks TM Domains Brands Let Drop & Get Registered Boeing; NCAA; ESPN Google AP & More - We have written over the years about brands, brand protection companies and dropping domain names which both brands and brand protection companies continue to miss. Not only do they miss grabbing them but they don’t even seem to try. Its pretty interesting sitting on the sidelines every week seeing companies spending $1,500 a pop to file a UDRP on a single domain name (plus attorneys fees) on the same type of domain names that are dropping and can be picked up for $69 on a back order or sometimes ... read more ...

ICANN Rejects Google’s Plan For Dotless Search Top-Level Domain - Google may still get to own the .search generic top-level domain (gTLD), but it won’t get to operate it as a dotless domain. ICANN ruled this week that dotless domains are prohibited, citing “the current security and stability risks” that have been identified in previous studies of dotless domains. The decision affirms recommendations made earlier by an ICANN security committee. The news was first reported by DomainIncite.com, which doubts that the decision will have any impact on Google’s ... read more ...

New gTLDs: If I Knew Then, What I Know Now… - If only I had been able to predict the new gTLD future, but alas my crystal ball (well, really it's a Magic 8 Ball ®) did little to help me. And I really doubt that 5+ years ago, when this new gTLD journey began, that anyone could have predicted where we are now. All that said, back in 2008, I wish I could have known that: Contention Sets Would be Based Upon Poor Eyesight I remember very clearly having discussions about whether something like .place and .theplace would fall into a contention ... read more ...

Clashes, collisions, delays and decisions: ICANN, NTIA, Verisign and ANA … - Last week, ICANN (the organization that oversees the domain name system of the Internet) was busy with nothing less than the security and stability of the Internet. At ICANN’s recent meeting in Durban, those of us attending heard a drumbeat of studies, presentations and concerns regarding "name collisions": the conflicts that will arise when new gTLDs go live and conflict with existing top-level extensions in private networks. For years, standard practice has been to use "internal domains" in ... read more ...

ICANN Bans Dotless Domains - Any new top level domain approved for the Internet will have to be more than just a single label. ICANN's new gTLD program committee (NGPC) has decided to ban the use of "dotless domains". TLD operators that had planned to use their new suffix as a keyword, i.e. just the string and nothing else, will now have to reconsider. Many experts, including ICANN's own technical advisory body SSAC (Security and Stability Advisory Committee), had warned that the use of dotless domains might pose a ... read more ...

A month after initial 4 TLD contracts signed, still usually 4 signed - There’s been a delay (surprise!) after the first four TLD contracts were signed. ICANN took advantage of its public meeting in Durban, South Africa last month for a public signing of the first four top level domain name contracts. It’s been a full month since then, and no one else has signed a contract yet. ICANN has just published a new statistics page to track the progress of registry signings. Although only four have signed so far, it looks like a lot more ... read more ...

Two weeks of finish user domain sales during Sedo - GE, MLB, and La Quinta make domain name purchases. I’m still playing catch up with end user domain sales reports. I combined the last two weeks of Sedo sale into one report. Big name buyers include GE and Major League Baseball. The Almond Board of California picked up Almonds.co.uk for $15,000. GE paid $1,177 for OxygenNow.com. It’s possible GE is also behind Sedo’s top purchase from a couple weeks ago, $30,000 for WaterTreatment.com. The domain was registered ... read more ...
