Watch Out for Fake Comments Suggesting Particular Domain Names - When is advice not advice? So I’m running through the latest comments on Domain Name Wire when I see this comment from “Simon”: I just saw domain.TV for sale on Sedo for $10,000. I really want that domain, but am unsure as to the true value (price seems high by at least $5K). Any advice out there? Followed shortly by this reply from “Neely”: don’t know what the value of domain.tv is; however, i believe the .tv domains will be the second most valuable extension ... read more ...

Yahoo Acquires Flicker.com - The whois record for Flicker.com was last updated a few weeks ago and Yahoo now owns the domain. Fickr.com of course is one of Yahoo’s prime properties and the 31st most visited site on the net according to Alexa. Surprisingly the domain Flicker.com is still resolving to the former owners site. We asked the question in a post just about a year ago why Yahoo had not purchased Flicker.com. The domain was also discussed in a blog post by TechCrunch last year as well. The domain has a long checked ... read more ...

Our Picks From The SnapNames Monthly Showcase Auction Ending Tuesday - The SnapNames.com monthly showcase auction for June closes tomorrow Tuesday June 15th at 3:15PM EST in accordance with Snaps normal closing procedures. The auction for June features “Telecom, Mobile and Tech” domains. We have gone through the few hundred domains in this auction and could only find a few “interesting” domains. Overall I would have to say the quality of this auction is one of the worst for a showcase auction. The domains with the highest reserve are PhoneService.com with a ... read more ...

If GM Doesn’t Want Anyone To Use The Word Chevy, Why Are The Promoting ChevyBaseball.com? - You got to love corporate America. Last week there was a big stink when an internal GM memo got leaked to the media, telling its employees that it didn’t want them to refer to Chevrolet  as “Chevy” anymore. Yet last night I was watching ESPN’s Sportscenter and during the highlights of the Cubs-White Sox game there behind home plate, wasa huge ad for ChevyBaseball.com Right the same week they tell all of their employees not to udder the word Chevy ever again the have a huge ad running behind ... read more ...

Mrs Jello Beats Big Company in Domain Name Dispute - Panel not convinced that West Corporation should get Entrado.com domain name. Well-known domain name investor Mrs Jello, LLC, commonly known as “Mrs Jello”, has successfully defended against a UDRP case brought by West Corporation. West Corporation (which has a good domain name West.com) has a subsidiary called Intrado (which has a bad domain name Intrado.com that is easy to misspell and doesn’t even resolve without the www in front of it). Yahoo Settles Lawsuit and Gets Flicker.com Domain Name - Yahoo now has Flicker.com for Flickr.com web site. As Michael Berkens pointed out today, Yahoo now owns the domain name Flicker.com. But this wasn’t your typical domain name sale. It was actually the culmination of year long anti-cybersquatting lawsuit brought against the Flicker.com owner AshantiPLC, which is owned in part by domain investor Sahar Sarid. Yahoo’s lawsuit against the Ashanti was filed in July 2009. Yahoo alleged that the defendants purchased ... read more ...

Thoughts About TRAFFIC Vancouver - A mostmortem on last week’s TRAFFIC conference. I enjoyed last week in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes it’s hard to provide updates on the blog during a conference because you’re too busy meeting with people. That was the case last week. So here’s a recap of some of my thoughts from last week: Attendance - About 150 people showed up for the event. Many more had registered but were unable to make it at the last minute, so I figure about 175 registered. ... read more ...

Tulsa, Oklahoma payment processor Blue Financial Corporation — which runs Bluefin Payment Systems — has been found guilty of reverse domain name hijacking by a WIPO UDRP panel. This case was particularly egregious. The Curious Case of ICANN Sponsorship - Some interesting sponsors for next week’s ICANN conference. Next week the domain name world will converge on Brussels for ICANN meeting number 38. It costs a lot of money to organize these ICANN meetings and the organization often comes under fire for this. To help defray the cost it offers various sponsorships. There are a couple interesting sponsors for the upcoming meeting, most notably ICM Registry. As you might recall, ICM Registry is embroiled in a dispute ... read more ...

DevHub Launches Latest Web Builder Release - Company targets niche enthusiasts with latest release. Last Monday I made a quick stop at DevHub’s offices in Seattle before heading to the DomainTools open house. From the moment I walked in to the office it was clear that people hadn’t been getting much sleep there. The company just launched the latest version of its easy-to-use web site creator and there have been a lot of sleepless nights getting it into production. Most notable in the new version is a ... read more ...

The .Jobs Backlash Has Begun - .Jobs process “stunk and lacked an open, honest, and transparent process” say some in career industry. When .jobs was originally introduced as a top level domain name, the plan was to let companies register only their company name, and only for use promoting jobs at their company; e.g. ATT.jobs and GoDaddy.jobs. The domain has floundered since so few domains could be registered. Hardly anyone even recognizes it as a URL when they see it. But there’s money ... read more ...

PersonalWealth.com Sells For A Rich Price On Namejet.com, $26,300 - The domain name PersonalWealth.com sold yesterday on NameJet.com for a Whopping $26,300. The domain does have an Alexa ranking of 5M but for me it seems like a steep price to pay for the domain. A closely related domain, RetireWealthy.com sold yesterday as well on NameJet.com for $8,621. I actually like that domain better for the money. Both domains were purchase by the same bidder. Congrats to the buyer. Google+Michael Berkens ... read more ...

WIPO Denies Complaint On The Parked Domain, FirstQuote.com By Trademark Holder: Did Being Offshore Save Them? - In one of the most interesting WIPO decisions of the year, A one person WIPO Panel today denied the complaint of 1stQuote.com against the owner of FirstQuote.com. What makes this case particularly interesting is that the trademark holder of 1stQuote.com already won WIPO Cases against the holders of the domains FirstQuote.net and FirstQuote.org in two separate filed WIPO actions. Even more interesting is that this panel ruling in favor of the domain holder might have turned on the fact that the registrant ... read more ...

Domain Disputes: Google Books, Royals, and Rachael Ray Pick adult Domains - Three UDRP decisions involve big brands. Google has won the domain name GoogleBooks.com through the UDRP domain name arbitration process at National Arbitration Forum. The domain name was being used by someone promoting the internet marketing product “Google Nemesis”. The owner registered the domain name back in 2004. Google, of course, wanted the domain name for its Google Books product at books.google.com. In a separate decision, Major League Baseball’s ... read more ...

The Coming Fall in Domain Name Values - It’s only a matter of time before sales prices of second tier TLDs fall. Is it unwise to invest in generic non .com domain names right now? With the exception of ccTLDs and perhaps .org, I think so. Sometime within the next 2-3 years we’ll see a flood of new top level domain names on the internet. We’ll see some topical TLDs such as .radio, .eco, and .radio. We’ll see geographical TLDs such as .nyc and .vegas. We’ll see some top level domains in non-Latin ... read more ...

E.CO Sells For $81K - The auction for the domain name E.CO just closed today on Sedo.com with a high bid of $81,000. I put the first bid in at $10K to get things rolling and then put another bid in at $25K. I think the domain is worth $100K or more to the right buyer especially following the news this week that  Twitter acquired T.CO. In our poll, only 19 of you correctly picked $75K-$100K as the correct price range that the domain would sell in. The majority of the guesses were for over $100K, which was my pick as well, ... read more ...
