.Jobs expected to be initial “new TLD” to launch this year - It’s not really “new”, but .jobs is likely to beat other TLDs to the market later this year. Forget prioritization draw numbers, new TLD objections, and contention sets: .jobs may be the first “new TLD” to be available for registration this year. It’s not really a “new” TLD. .Jobs is a sponsored top level domain that was entered into the root in 2005. But it was initially heavily restricted. Companies could only register domains that matched their ... read more ...

Rare bird .jobs domain speckled in a wild - A fashion brand actually uses the rare .jobs domain name. I went to the mall with my daughter this past weekend when something suddenly stopped me in my tracks. I pulled out my smartphone and snapped a picture. My six-year-old daughter looked at me with a confused expression and asked, “What, dad? What is it?” “Something rarer than a unicorn,” I told her. Indeed, this is what I saw: Yes, that’s a .jobs domain. It’s the first time I think I’ve seen one ... read more ...

The .Jobs Charter Compliance Coalition, a group of job boards opposed to expansion of the .jobs namespace, has sent a letter (pdf) to ICANN’s CEO and Board of Directors asking it to hurry up, open up, and get a spine. Hurry Up The letter admonishes ICANN for an apparent lack of progress in its arbitration proceedings with .jobs registry Employ Media, or at least not updating the ... read more ...

.Jobs Foes Get Cold Shoulder From ICANN - Response to disclosure request mostly redacted. The .JOBS Charter Compliance Coalition, a group of companies opposed to the expansion of who can register .jobs domain names, has gotten the cold shoulder from ICANN in a recent request. The group made a request through ICANN’s Documentary Information Disclosure Policy (DIDP) for information on how and why the IANA database entry about the “purpose” of .jobs was changed. ICANN responded by releasing the support ... read more ...

Job Boards Launch Another Attack on .Jobs Registry - Monster, CareerBuilder, and others write open letter to ICANN. The .Jobs Charter Compliance Coalition, whose membership consists of online job boards, has sent an “open letter” to ICANN regarding Employ Media’s request for arbitration over .jobs. The Coalition says that its letter is to “address the Request’s numerous inconsistencies, omissions and mischaracterizations” in Employ Media’s request for arbitration. The letter states: The Coalition believes ... read more ...

Fight Over .Jobs is About to Cost Domain Name Owners - Legal bills could start coming in as two sides bicker of .jobs domain name. An argument between .jobs registry Employ Media and ICANN has already cost some legal dollars, and I have a feeling it’s about to get more expensive. Although the two parties are technically in a process of “Cooperative Engagement”, recent correspondence is not favorable. In fact, the parties are sending correspondence about correspondence. On April 22 counsel for Employ Media sent ... read more ...

.Jobs Operator Says ICANN “Publicly Defamed” It - Employ Media says ICANN “publicly defamed” it in breach notice. .Jobs registry Employ Media has struck back at ICANN after the latter sent it a breach notice. In a letter to ICANN, Employ Media Vice‐President General Counsel Brian Johnson wrote: It goes without saying that all of us here at Employ Media, and indeed many in the international human resource management community, are extremely surprised and disappointed with ICANN’s complete reversal of ... read more ...

ICANN May Shut Down .Jobs Registry - ICANN threatens to shut down .jobs, even after approving its “registry service”. ICANN has notified .jobs registry Employ Media LLC that it is in breach of its contract at ICANN, and the contract is subject to cancellation if the breach isn’t corrected within 30 days. That this breach letter (pdf) is going out now shows a massive failure on the part of ICANN. (More on that in a bit.) In a letter dated February 27, ICANN informs Employ Media that it has failed ... read more ...

ICANN To Review .Jobs Decision - .Jobs expansion plans hit a snag, but it’s probably minor. Following an outcry from the online job board industry, ICANN’s Board Governance Committee (BGC) agreed to reconsider opening up the .jobs space carte blanche. I doubt anything will come of this reconsideration request, even if the BGC recommends to the Board that it reverse its decision. We all know what happened after ICANN’s board reversed its original decision on .xxx. That issue is still carrying ... read more ...

CareerBuilder and Monster Want to Stop .Jobs Domain Expansion - Group forms to object to .jobs expansion. A group calling itself The .JOBS Charter Compliance Coalition is asking ICANN’s board to reconsider its decision to open up the .jobs top level domain name to non-company name registrations. The coalition’s members include major employment web sites such as Monster and CareerBuilder, along with a number of associations. In a letter (pdf) to the Committee of the Board on Reconsideration, the group argues that: -The .jobs ... read more ...

Battle Over .Jobs is Growing - .Jobs debate “ends” Thursday. I wrote last month about a move to open up the .jobs domain name. Currently only companies can register .jobs domains, and only with their company name (e.g. ATT.jobs). The group behind this sponsored TLD wants to open it up, with the idea of creating a ton of (million?) job boards using the domains. From Policy.jobs: Previously, Employ Media [which runs .jobs under contract] began the process of creating a self-managed class of ... read more ...

The .Jobs Backlash Has Begun - .Jobs process “stunk and lacked an open, honest, and transparent process” say some in career industry. When .jobs was originally introduced as a top level domain name, the plan was to let companies register only their company name, and only for use promoting jobs at their company; e.g. ATT.jobs and GoDaddy.jobs. The domain has floundered since so few domains could be registered. Hardly anyone even recognizes it as a URL when they see it. But there’s money ... read more ...

www.ATT.jobs? Seriously. - I’ve finally seen an ad with a .jobs domain. That’s a mistake. Monday afternoon I made the return car trip from Houston to Austin. It’s about a 3 hour drive without much to see. As I rolled into Austin I saw a billboard for ATT (NYSE: T). The ad called attention to jobs at ATT using the URL www.att.jobs. At this point I’d been driving for a few hours, so I did a double take. Where’s the domain extension? Is that supposed to be www.att.com/jobs? Or ... read more ...
