5 Offline Ways to Promote Your City.com Web Site - Drive traffic to your geo domain web site. I’ve been researching offline promotion methods as I prepare to launch my Lakeway geo web site. Here are the ideas I’ve come up with so far: 1. Sports team sponsorship. Lakeway has one high school, and the city rallies around its sports teams. I’m working to get football stadium signage, program advertising, etc. 2. Billboards. If you want to make a big splash and get noticed, consider renting a billboard for a ... read more ...

What is “Good” Web Site Traffic? - A record traffic weekend sounds good. But was the traffic valuable? All web traffic is not created equal. Most web site owners know this, and smart domain name parkers understand it, too. Yet I frequently see people new to the industry saying “hey, a visitor is a visitor and a click is a click, right?” The answer is an unequivocal “no”. Consider this weekend on Domain Name Wire. On a typical business day I typically have 20-30 people surfing at DNW at ... read more ...

Typo FAIL - An unwise typo domain purchase. This domain name auction, which concluded earlier today, begs two questions: 1. Do domain parkers click on ads when they accidentally stumble across a parked page? 2. Who would be stupid enough to shell out $2,250 on a domain that they’ll lose through arbitration? Update 3/23: I received a note from Sedo today that the transaction was canceled. With regards to the comments below about allowing sales like this to happen, my experience ... read more ...

Special Olympics, The R-Word, and One Embarassing Domain Name - Domain tasting operation picks up a domain and parks it with the “r” word. [Updated: eNom is now forwarding the domain name to r-word.org and says it will transfer ownership to Special Olympics.] In many ways President Obama’s gaffe on The Tonight Show last night was the best thing to happen to the Special Olympics in a long time. What If Congress Passed A Law To Tax Domain Parking Page Revenue At 90% - For me today’s action by the House of Representative is very scary. Today the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill which would tax employees of companies receiving bank bailout funds at 90%, if they made $250K or more. “We figured that the local and state governments would take care of the other 10 percent,” said Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. Now if you read this blog regularly you will see that we are no fan ... read more ...

Someone’s Shouting a F-Bomb About Fbomb.com - Obscure clothing company wins fbomb.com in arbitration. In January I wrote about an ongoing auction at Sedo for the domain name Fbomb.com. Here’s what I wrote: “FBomb.com – $1,500 – so many uses” There are so many uses because of the generic meaning of f-bomb. So I was surprised to notice a few weeks later that fbomb.com was in arbitration at National Arbitration Forum. I contact the owner who told me that the company that won the domain at Sedo filed ... read more ...

Survey: DNForum Tops NamePros - DNForum barely tops NamePros in survey. A survey of 401 domainers says that DNForum is the best domain name forum — but just barely. Of the survey participants who selected a choice, 47% voted for DNForum and 42% voted for NamePros. DomainState came in third with 11%, and AcornDomains received 2%.
