Domain Auctions aren’t for End Users. Get Over It. - Domain name auctions have never been, and will never be, for end users. I’ve read a lot of complaints over the past week about how late the domain auction houses have released their auction lists for this week’s TRAFFIC show in NYC. That’s a fair complaint. Domain lists should be released weeks, not days, before an auction. But the main complaint I hear is that by releasing the lists so late, it makes it impossible to market the domains to end users. This ... read more ...

LogicBoxes Helps Domainers Set Up Domain Registrars - Long-running program being marketed to individual domainers. LogicBoxes has been providing consulting services to help companies set up their own domain registrar for years. But this week the company unveiled a new push to help individual domainers set up their own registry. Many large domainers, including Frank Schilling, ... read more ...

Aftermarket.com Takes Different Approach to Domain Auctions - While many are focusing on big ticket domains at Moniker and Rick Latona, I’ll be paying attention to Aftermarket.com auction. Already the competition has proven valuable, pushing the different players to sell themselves ... read more ...

Two Domain Name Observations on a Plane Trip - Domainers always notice interesting domain names. Here are two examples from my recent trip. Last week I traveled to San Francisco. On the plane trip home I checked a bag at San Jose airport and was given my boarding pass with a claim check for the bag. The boarding pass and claim check each had domain names on them, and each made me recall domain stories. First, the back of the boarding pass had an ad for accessing flight information at AA.com on your mobile phone. ... read more ...

Government Changing Rules On a Fly: Should You Be Worried?? - Lost in the financial crisis is a what many may find disturbing, the US government fundamental changed the rules of the financial game, literally overnight, with no congressional hearing, no notice, and with no disregard for those who found themselves on the wrong side of the change. On Friday, the Securities and Exchange Commission took the unprecedented step of banning, the perfectly legal practice of short selling in 799 financial stocks, for at least 30 days. When you short a stock you basically ... read more ...

WSJ: Display Ads Making a Comeback? - According to a story in the Wall Street Journal Microsoft says it will publish evidence in the coming week that proves display ads are actually better than searches when it comes to get consumers to take auction. The question is what leads consumers to take action on the Web.  Either to buying something, or do something like printing a coupon. The research concludes that by the time consumers search for a product or service, they’ve often already made up their minds to buy it. And display ads ... read more ...

In New York Life Goes On - Having been in New York, all week, though this very shaky stock market, I can report that life goes on in New York. The kids are still playing in central park. The Dogs are still sniffing each other’s butts. The Met’s still look like they are going to fold again in September. On Wednesday the day of the second 400+ drop in the Dow this week, Gordon Ramsey restaurant at the London Hotel was completely  booked unless you wanted to eat at 5:00 pm.
