Theglobe.com To Sell .Travel Domain Name Registry - Company enters into letter of intent to sell subsidiary. Theglobe.com (TGLO.ob) has signed a letter of intent to sell its Tralliance subsidiary. Tralliance is the registry for .travel domain names. Sounds simple enough, but this incestuous deal is complicated enough to make your head spin. The .travel registry almost went bankrupt last year before it was bailed out by majority shareholder Michael Egan. But then Egan was involved in a number of insider dealings ... read more ...

Survey Focus: Which Major Domain Conference is Best? - Survey asks domainers to pick the best domain conference. TRAFFIC, Domain Roundtable, DomainFEST, GeoDomain…which is best? That’s just one of the new questions on this year’s Domain Name Wire survey. (If you haven’t participated yet, click here.) Here’s a quick run down of the various domain conferences: TRAFFIC – It’s actually spelled T.R.A.F.F.I.C., but that’s one pain to type out. Seriously though, TRAFFIC can be credited with kicking off a wave ... read more ...

TRAFFIC AUCTION: OUR TAKE - As we reported earlier today the TRAFFIC Live auction did 4.3 million in sales. Some are sounding the alarm that this is a bad sign for the domain industry, since the auction did quite a bit less than the Miami TRAFFIC auction held in October. However, you need to look at the big picture: Most importantly, DomainFest.com which held an auction just three weeks ago did over 3.1 million dollars in their live auction and another 1 million dollars in the silent auction. In the past, many of the domains ... read more ...

Moniker Auction Nets $4.4 Million, SkiResorts.com sells for $850,000 - Moniker’s live domain auction ends with mixed results. If tonight’s domain name auction was a barometer for the domain industry, we know nothing more than we did before the auction began. The results were, well, mediocre. Before it began, I set a personal range for the auction. Anything less than $4 million would be a failure, anything greater than $6M would be a success. The auction ended up squarely in the middle, with $4.4 million changing hands (including ... read more ...

First Light Net Reels In Fishing.org - Fishing and outdoor network understands the power of keyword domains, also finds success with .mobi. First Light Net, A Predatorial Advertising Associates L.L.C. Company, has reeled in a big fish with its purchase of Fishing.org for $38,500. First Light Net is no stranger to the power of generic domains, as I found out in a recent e-mail interview with Michael Hodgdon. The company is also finding success on the mobile web, which should be music to .mobi owners’ ... read more ...

Tucows Reveals Depth of Domain Portfolio - Company discloses valuable domains and number of domains held. Domain registration “wholesaler” and service provider Tucows (AMEX: TCX) has revealed data about its domain holdings. With over 150,000 domains, the portfolio makes up a significant part of the company’s value, which likely hasn’t been fully captured in its stock price. Its shares on the AMEX are sitting at $.63, just off a 52 week low of $.53 and well below a high of $1.41. (I’m assuming ... read more ...

Microsoft Will Not Increase It’s Offer/ Proxy Battle Coming/ Yahoo Passes Severance Plan - According to reports published today, Microsoft will not increase its bid for Yahoo above the $31 a share offered two weeks ago. The same reports states that Microsoft will instead authorize a proxy battle for Yahoo. According to the report Microsoft would nominate a slate of directors by March 13, if Yahoo’s board does not enter merger talks with Microsoft. It was estimated that a proxy fight would cost Microsoft between $20 to $30-million. In a separate report, Yahoo said to be adopting a defensive ... read more ...

www.ATT.jobs? Seriously. - I’ve finally seen an ad with a .jobs domain. That’s a mistake. Monday afternoon I made the return car trip from Houston to Austin. It’s about a 3 hour drive without much to see. As I rolled into Austin I saw a billboard for ATT (NYSE: T). The ad called attention to jobs at ATT using the URL www.att.jobs. At this point I’d been driving for a few hours, so I did a double take. Where’s the domain extension? Is that supposed to be www.att.com/jobs? Or ... read more ...

This Weeks Yahoo-Microsoft Merger Update - This was the week that Yahoo said no to $31 a share offer by Microsoft. It was also the week that Yahoo raised the possibility of seeking a marketing deal with News Corp, or a deal with AOL. It is expected that Microsoft will increase its offer to $35 a share in the next week or two or launch a hostile takeover bid which would involve unseating most or all of the Yahoo Board of directors Other issues that arose this week concerning the merger, is over the amount of control the combined company would ... read more ...

Marchex Reduces Dependency on Yahoo - Company continues to build its own ad network, reducing dependency on Yahoo. Direct navigation and domain name companies typically get pay-per-click ads from Yahoo (YHOO) and Google (GOOG). As I pointed out earlier this week, this duopoly is dangerous for domain owners. Domain company Marchex (MCHX) realizes that, and is increasingly focused on building its own ad network. In Q3 the company received 28% of its direct navigation revenue from Yahoo. Q4 numbers aren’t ... read more ...

DNS: Rouge Servers on a Lose - According to a report by the  Georgia Institute of Technology and Google Inc Servers controlled by hackers that reroute Internet traffic from infected computers to fraudulent Web sites are increasingly being used to launch attacks. The report estimates roughly 68,000 servers on the Internet are returning malicious Domain Name System results, which means people with compromised computers are sometimes being directed to the wrong Web sites — and often have no idea.
