This elementary cognisance illustrates a existence of code insurance in new TLDs -
A visualization of reality for brand protection costs and new top level domain names.
One thing that’s clear from talking to various people at ICANN 50 this week is that they are surprised by the low level of defensive trademark registrations in new TLDs.
The trademark lobby expected a nightmare. New TLD applicants expected a lot less, but still more than they got.
Here’s the reality in a simple chart:
No harm done to the trademark lobby for exaggerating the ... read more ...

New TLD registries need to forget about morning revenue -
New top level domain registries need to scratch the sunrise line item off their PLs.
I think many observers are surprised by the low number of trademark sunrise registrations in new top level domain names so far.
Calzone, a calendar for new TLD rollouts, has put together some numbers and analysis on sunrise periods so far.
The net-net is that sunrises so far have averaged between 100-200 registrations. That’s about 1% of how many sunrise registrations .co received ... read more ...

.Club binds winter domain name auction on Sedo -
New TLD to hold auction during its sunrise period.
New top level domain name .club is holding its first domain name auction on Sedo.
The auction features “winter sports” domain names (really it’s Olympic themed, but there are trademark issues with that) including sochi.club, snowboard.club, skate.club, icehockey.club and bobsled.club.
The trademark sunrise for .club just began and runs through March 29. If you win a domain name in the auction that is later claimed ... read more ...

10 takeaways from new tip turn domain name morning durations so far -
Here are ten things to think about after 15 top level domain names have completed their sunrise periods.
14 of Donuts’ domain names as well as شبكة. have gone through sunrise so far.
Only one of the fifteen domains received more than 200 sunrise registrations. Add to that Donuts’ Domain Protect Marks List, and you can argue the number is a bit higher, but still less than 1,000 or 1,500 per domain.
Here are my key takeaways:
1. Intellectual property owners ... read more ...

Donuts’ subsequent 7 sunrises: usually 2 tip 100 domain names -
Based on zone files, only two of Donuts’ second batch of TLDs to go through sunrise topped 100 registrations.
Last week I wrote about Donuts’ first seven sunrises, each of which typically resulted in about 100-200 registrations.
The next batch of seven domain names has concluded sunrise, and the numbers are markedly lower: only two reached 100 domain names, according to the latest zone files.
Now, as with last time, there are a lot of caveats with this data, and ... read more ...

Digging in on Donuts’ Sunrise: Amazon tops a list, gaming, and tip registrars -
Here’s a look at the top registrants and registrars, plus details on possible gaming and EAP day one registrations.
Last night I published initial data about Donuts’ sunrise period on its first seven domain names. This was based on names in the zone files that were published last night.
As I mentioned in my previous post, the number of names in the zone file should be considered the lower bound of names that were actually registered in sunrise. I’ve already ... read more ...

Donuts to skip Landrush on initial collection of TLDs -
Sunrise to begin November 26.
Donuts announced this morning that it plans to start the sunrise for its first seven top level domain names on November 26. The sunrise will close on January 24, 2014.
The seven domains are .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles, and .ventures.
Interestingly, the company has chosen to skip the landrush phase for these domain names. The landrush period typically allows people interested in premium domains to place their ... read more ...

SnapNames throws shawl into domain morning and landrush auction ring -
KeyDrive companies want to play a role in new TLD rollout.
SnapNames and Moniker have announced they will support sunrise and landrush auctions for new top level domain registries.
The company will, of course, also offer premium generic sales and auctions for registry withheld domain names.
I’ve been told by a newish TLD registry (I think I just coined a term) in the past that Pool.com is really the only service that meets the unique needs of a sunrise auction. ... read more ...
