ICANN Labs takes a breather to concentration on new ICANN website -
Group pauses other activities to work on new website.
Since making a post on November 20 about working on a new ICANN.org website, the ICANN Labs initiative has been radio silent.
ICANN Labs launched last summer as a way to improve communications and community involvement within the ICANN community.
The initiative, which involves an outsourced team at Neo, has created four beta projects so far. It is practicing fast-cycle development – so fast, apparently, that ... read more ...

Chinese IDN TLDs devise dual day launch celebration and live auction in Macau -
New TLD applicant plans big launch party and live auction in Macau.
It’s going to be really difficult for new top level domain backers to get much attention for their launches in an environment where multiple TLDs are launching every week.
But TLD Registry, which is launching Chinese equivalents of online (.在线) and website (.中文网) is going all in with a two day celebration and live domain name auction.
The event is scheduled for March 20-21 at the Galaxy ... read more ...
Why is it so formidable to remember that TLDs have been practical for? -
The fact that there are so many of them makes it more difficult for me to recall which ones were applied for.
I live and breathe domain names, and research what’s going on with new TLDs on a daily basis.
But when I’m put on the spot and people ask me for examples of some of the new domain names coming out, I often freeze.
I can think of a few, but after that I start questioning to myself: wait, did someone actually apply for this domain about about to mention?
Was ... read more ...

Uniregistry’s new TLD launch skeleton are opposite from a others -
Uniregistry plans a more inclusive sunrise, no landrush, and simpler pricing.
Frank Schilling’s Uniregistry is taking a very different approach to launching its domain names than most other registries.
Rather than squeeze out every last drop of revenue possible from launch phases, it’s doing what it can to push its domains into the hands of registrants. That’s according to launch documents it has filed with ICANN as well as public statements Frank Schilling ... read more ...

Nudity is too sexy for .sexy home pages.
Anyone who wants to register a .sexy domain name to build their porn empire, take note: you can’t have nudity on the “home page” of your domain name.
.Sexy registry Uniregistry spells out the rules in a revised document (pdf) it filed with ICANN on January 20. The guidelines only apply to the home page. This means that sites could have a warning button/entry page on the home page that leads to adult material elsewhere ... read more ...

A cost comparison of domain name escrow services -
Here’s a comparison of domain name escrow services based on price – but price shouldn’t be the only thing you consider.
There are a lot of options when it comes to domain name escrow. Naturally, price is a variable when selecting an escrow service. So I put together a simple chart that compares prices of 7 escrow services at different transaction values.
The prices make a few assumptions:
1. You’re in the U.S. and the transaction is in U.S. Dollars.
2. You ... read more ...
A Recap: My week during NamesCon -
A recap of what I did, saw, and heard during NamesCon last week.
Last week was the inaugural NamesCon conference in Las Vegas.
In case you weren’t one of the close to 600 people who experienced it in person, everything you’ve heard is spot on: it was a home run. Richard Lau, Jodi Chamberlain, and Jothan Frakes did a fantastic job pulling this conference together in a short period of time. They saw a hole in the domain conference circuit and filled it with zeal. ... read more ...

Pool.com scores sunrise and landrush business for two domains, but this aspect of TLD launches isn’t as important as before.
Pool.com announced today that it will handle auction resolution for the sunrise and landrush phases for Austrian TLDs .wien and .tirol (its capital city and a province, respectively).
I won’t write about every company’s win for this type of service, but this one is newsworthy for a few reasons.
First, before the new TLD program came out, ... read more ...

Bruce Marler listened to his customers. Then he altered his geodomain business model. -
People weren’t very interested in buying local ads anymore. But they were interested in something else.
I remember to go-go days of geo domain names. There was an annual geo domain conference where owners of geographic domain names – e.g. city.com or state.com – got together to boast about their success.
But the business model for these domain names has always been a bit elusive. It shifted during the recession. The tried-and-true model of directory listings ... read more ...

Second day of NamesCon is about to start.
The first full day of NamesCon in Las Vegas yesterday was a big success. Sure, like any brand new conference, there were a couple hitches here and there. But overall the crowd was big, the content was great, and reviews have been positive.
If you aren’t at the show, I invite you to follow me on twitter for photos and updates about the show as they happen.

How to collect that NamesCon sessions to attend -
A handy guide to choosing conference sessions and some of my picks.
The agenda for next week’s NamesCon conference in Las Vegas appears to be basically finalized. For the first time in many years, I’m actually excited about attending some of the sessions rather than just networking with people in the hallways.
Selecting sessions is challenging, especially since there will be three simultaneous breakout sessions.

Are you going to NamesCon in Las Vegas next week?
If you’re reading this post, there’s a good chance you are. With over 450 people expected to attend, NamesCon will be the biggest domain name conference in a year (excluding ICANN’s meetings).
The huge attendance numbers are good news, but it can also make it more difficult to network. The more people, the harder it is to seek out people you’d like ... read more ...

NamesCon domain name discussion might sell out -
With over 400 attendees, NamesCon is nearing capacity.
I’m not sure what constitutes a “sell out”, but apparently this month’s NamesCon conference is nearing its capacity:
Over 400 people have already registered, making this the biggest domainer-focused conference since Webfest nearly a year ago. This is despite being announced just a few months ago. The timing (with new TLDs finally rolling out) is great, the cost is low, and the content looks better than ... read more ...
