Local.com Buys Octane360 for Up to $11 Million -
Company powered by geo domains is acquired.
I got a “we should catch up” email from Octane360 CEO Adam Rioux last night. Then this morning I see this – he just sold his company for $5 million in cash and stock plus an earnout of $5.9 million.
My first thought: that was fast. My second thought: I’m not too surprised.
I’ve been singing the praises of Octane360’s business model for a while, and talking about what it can do for owners of localized domain ... read more ...

Here’s just one example of the headaches ahead for Yahoo advertisers. Today the company sent out an email telling all of its advertisers that it will need to cut their ad headline length to no more than 25 characters. Yahoo currently allows 40.

Demand’s deal with Tyra, and what it says about creating profitable content: you need hub sites.
Demand Media has entered into a partnership with Tyra Banks to create a new digital brand for the beauty and fashion industry.
I expect this to be similar to the company’s deal with Lance Armstrong for LiveStrong.com. Basically, the company created a new branded web site with star power, plugged it into Demand’s content pipeline and social media machine, and started ... read more ...

DevHub Launches Latest Web Builder Release -
Company targets niche enthusiasts with latest release.

Most notable in the new version is a ... read more ...
Thoughts About TRAFFIC Vancouver -
A mostmortem on last week’s TRAFFIC conference.
I enjoyed last week in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes it’s hard to provide updates on the blog during a conference because you’re too busy meeting with people. That was the case last week. So here’s a recap of some of my thoughts from last week:
Attendance - About 150 people showed up for the event. Many more had registered but were unable to make it at the last minute, so I figure about 175 registered. ... read more ...

Poll: Choose Your Domain Conference Location -
Help name a domain discussion location.
This is a suppositious here. And no, I’m not operative on a domain name conference. But let’s contend we were going to attend a domain discussion over a winter. Which of these locations would we prefer?
Feel giveaway to leave comments with specifics if we want.

TRAFFIC Kicks Off in Vancouver -
A TRAFFIC conference in Vancouver, eh?
Yesterday afternoon I carpooled from Seattle to Vancouver for the TRAFFIC conference. As we crossed the border, the border agent was very stern.
Why are you entering Canada?
For a conference.
What kind of conference?
A domain name conference.
A what?
I thought we were about to get into one of “those conversations” where you try to explain the domain name industry. But we didn’t and were shortly on our way into the city.

Content and domain name behemoth Demand Media splashes more color.
Demand Media’s business model has evolved over time, so it’s only natural that the company is refreshing its image.
Today the company released a new web site and logo. The top image in this post is the company’s new logo; the bottom image is the old. The old image was much more reserved and corporate, while the new one is on the fringe. My first thought when I saw the new home page was similarity ... read more ...

The Week Ahead: Seattle, Then Vancouver -
Stay tuned to DNW for reports from TRAFFIC.
I’m headed up to the Pacific Northwest this week, and the timing couldn’t be better. It’s getting hot in Austin. It’s near 100 degrees, which is hot enough that I’m asking myself why I live here.
My first stop will be Seattle on Monday (high temperature 71) to visit DomainTools’ new offices. I checked out their old digs a couple years ago, and they were nice. But word is the new offices are a nice improvement. ... read more ...
