Checkmate, GoDaddy – Google starts flogging dot-word domain names -
Google has finally launched a domain-name shop, providing a clean and simple management interface that will put it in direct competition with market leader GoDaddy.
Called Google Domains, the service emerged from testing today – and allows anyone in the United States (international expansion coming soon) to register domain names under 80 or so gTLDs from dot-academy to dot-ventures. Domains cost between $12 to $30 to register, and $12 a year to ... read more ...

Google Domains Launches Public Beta in US, Offers Over 60 New TLDs -
The much anticipated Google Domains launched to public US availability in beta on Tuesday. The beta launch also includes several new features and improvements, as Google tries to muscle in on registrars like VeriSign and Sedo and even SMB one-stop shops like GoDaddy and Web.com.
The service was originally launched to invite-only beta in June, shortly after GoDaddy filed documents for an IPO. Google’s announcement seemed to at least delay that plan, though Google may have more motivation to ... read more ...
NamesCon Auction This Afternoon -
As you’ve likely heard by now, NamesCon will be conducting its first domain name auction later on this afternoon. The auction was organized by Right of the Dot (ROTD), and there is a big focus on the new gTLD domain names. Just about every time I’ve seen ROTD founders Monte Cahn and Mike Berkens at NamesCon, the duo seem to be huddling together over a laptop, most likely working on the auction.
I am most curious to see how the bidding goes on the new gTLD domain names. Although I have ... read more ...

Confusion, fear and growing pains: ICANN bigwig spells out gTLD headaches -
It's not easy being global DNS overseer ICANN right now.
The addition of hundreds of new generic top-level domains – gTLDs from .book to .ninja – has been an operational headache; the transition of the key IANA contract is put it under an unfavorable spotlight; and a recent hack of its staff admin systems has raised questions over its technical competence.
But everything is fine, and terrible, ... read more ...

.brands – Nobody Said It Was Easy -
I've got enormous respect and admiration for the passionate individuals who are still championing .brands for their organisations in the new Top-Level Domain (TLD) program.
I have the pleasure of assisting quite a few of these on a daily basis and I'm sure their experiences aren't isolated with other applicants across the globe.
Put yourself in their shoes.

NCC Group’s new ‘.trust’ domain promises Internet security overhaul - With a flood of new general top-level domains (gTLDs) reaching Internet users in 2014, security UK firm NCC Group and a clutch of large Internet brands have announced a new secure domain they hope will turn out to be the most significant of them all.
Called ‘.Trust’, at first it’s not clear that this is anything cleverer than a bit of security engineering for businesses that want to stick .trust on the end of their e-commerce websites and emails. Does the world need yet another gTLD, even ... read more ...
What’s in a top-level domain name? - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is currently in the process of evaluating 1,930 applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), in the hope of ushering in a new era for the Internet and enabling organisations to register domains such as .shop or .bank alongside existing gTLDs like .com and .org.

Go Only for Big Bang gTLD Rebranding -
If you're considering rebranding under a new gTLD, go with a comprehensive big bang. A recent study by professors Dale Miller, Bill Merrilees, and Raisa Yakimova ("Corporate Rebranding: An Integrative Review of Major Enablers and Barriers to the Rebranding Process”) finds that success comes when senior management makes an unweaving commitment based on proactive analyses of the entire value-chain, with buy-in and input from employees and suppliers. Rebranding companies should not ignore the ... read more ...

Congress Will Oversight ICANN: And You Can Take That to the Bank -
Therefore, I wish to call for the establishment of such a new body that will work in cooperation with the NTIA to exercise supervisory responsibilities over ICANN.
Even though the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plays a very important role in the global Internet ecosystem, its activities are not frequently mentioned in the mainstream international media; that is, until ICANN's name is mentioned alongside that of the US Congress in a US$1.1 trillion Omnibus spending ... read more ...
