.Sport Whines Again: Please Don’t Allow .Football! -
Group again asks ICANN to not allow any individual sports to get top level domain names.
Last August the so-called .Sport Policy Advisory Council (basically a group that wants to launch the .sport top level domain name) told ICANN it was unhappy with the idea that there could be individual sports (such as .baseball) as top level domains. At the time, the .Sport Policy Advisory Council wrote:
We cannot accept ICANN approving any applications for top-level domains ... read more ...

dotSPORT Continues the Trademark Frontrunning -
Company tries to get leg up in new TLD process with trademarks.
I’ve written a couple times about prospective new top level domain applicants trying to trademark the names of their proposed TLD (e.g. .eco).
But it appears dotSport LLC, one of the companies going after what will likely be a competition for .sport, is being quite aggressive.
According to filings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the company has tried to register DotSport, RegistryDotSport, ... read more ...
Forget .Me, How About .Ego? -
Entrepreneur kicks around idea for .ego top level domain name.
Got a big ego? You might be able to pick up YourName.ego once new top level domain names are released.
A Florida man has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “.ego” for “Extension of domain names for identification of personal users on a global computer network”.
I contacted David Ways today to see what his plans are for the domain name.
“.Ego encompasses ... read more ...

.Arab: “Sorry We’re Late, Please Change a Rules” -
Another group asks for special consideration in new gTLD process.
Now that three versions of the Draft Applicant Guidebook for new top level domain names have been released, a group backing .arab is asking ICANN to make special accommodations for it.
In a letter dated May 4, International Telecommunication Union informs ICANN that it has been appointed by the League of Arab States (LAS) to help establish the .arab TLD and corresponding IDN gTLD.
The letter asks ... read more ...

.XXX? Just Wait Until They Learn About New TLDs -
People commenting on .xxx must not be aware of looming new TLDs.
I’ve written a couple times about the comment period for what to do with ICM Registry and the .xxx top level domain name. The majority of comments submitted to ICANN are from people opposed to pornography in general. Religious and conservative leaders are calling on others to submit similar comments.
Not only is the question ICANN is seeking input on not being answered , but it’s clear that these ... read more ...

New Top Level Domain Trademark Frontrunning Battle Heats Up -
.Eco trademark fight heats up, but pot is calling the kettle black.
In June I wrote about how companies wanting to apply for new top level domain names were attempting to file trademarks on non-existent top level domain names.
One of the examples I gave was .eco. At the time, Colored Planet Connextion appeared close to getting a trademark approved. Canadian company Big Room also filed an application for the .eco mark.
While both of these groups want to launch a ... read more ...

New TLD Debate Mirrors Health Care Debate -
New TLD debate has degenerated into nonsense.
If you live in America, the past several months have been all about loonies on both sides of the health care debate. They’ll say just about anything, even if it’s not true, to sway opinion on health care. The new top level domain name debate is really quite similar. Like American political issues, you have people on extremes on both sides of the issues.
On one side you have Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse ... read more ...
Afilias Tells New TLD Applicants to Limit Their Expectations -
How many registrations should a new TLD expect?
A call for new top level domain name applicants to be realistic about how many domains they can sell is coming from an unlikely source: domain name registry Afilias.
In a blog post today, Afilias points out that history tells us new TLDs don’t get substantial registrations:
…Well, here we are in 2010 and the industry has now grown to over 190 million domain names. If you think it was because of new TLDs, you’d ... read more ...

.Africa Can Learn from .Asia, and WHOIS Behind Adrenaline TLD? -
Will a continent TLD work, and the mystery of Adrenaline TLD.
The number of firms coming out from the woodwork with plans to launch new TLDs is increasing. Some of these groups have been out in the open for a while but are just now revving up the PR machine.
First, let’s take a look at .Africa. It certainly got some more visibility during ICANN’s meeting in Kenya. But haven’t we been here before? .Asia has been frequently dismissed as not making any sense. ... read more ...
Olympic Committee Continues to Pester ICANN for Special Status -
IOC to ICANN: just a friendly reminder that we’re important.
The International Olympic Committee has sent another letter to ICANN requesting that it be given “holier-than-thou” trademark rights and special protections for the launch of new top level domain names.
As you may recall, in April 2009 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sent a letter to ICANN stating that its trademarks receive special international protection, and that it was worried it would ... read more ...

.Canon: Why Would You Want .Brand? -
I’m still trying to understand .brand.
I’ve never understood the lure of a brand owning .brand. Yesterday Canon announced that it will launch .canon when new top level domain names are allowed. Why? I’d really like to understand everyone’s opinion on this, but let me first clear the air of common claims I hear.
If I own my .brand, I don’t need to register all of my products/services in .com. So if you’re Verizon, you won’t care anymore if someone ... read more ...

Registry – Registrar Integration Debate Far from Over for New TLDs -
Some integration between registries and registrars likely for new TLDs.
Last week I reported about an ICANN board resolution that called for “strict separation of entities offering registry services and those acting as registrars. No co-ownership will be allowed.”
In other words, domain name registrars such as Go Daddy and eNom would not be able to own a domain name registry similar to Neustar or VeriSign.
Well, the resolution is only half the story. Now that ... read more ...

Shocker: ICANN Nixes Expressions of Interest for New TLDs -
No Expressions of Interest for new top level domain names.
I guess I’m not in the internal loop at ICANN, but I’m surprised that its board voted to completely nix the idea of “Expressions of Interest” for new top level domain names.
The idea was simple. If you want to apply for a new top level domain name, you would make a $55,000 deposit per TLD and name the string.
This would resolve a whole host of issues. First, we’d know how many TLDs will be applied ... read more ...
ICANN Board Drops Bomb on Registrars Hoping to Launch New TLDs -
Board opts for separation of registrars and registries for new top level domain names.
[Update: Minutes from board meeting emphasize pending plan from GNSO.] ICANN’s board resolved today that there will be “strict separation of entities offering registry services and those acting as registrars. No co-ownership will be allowed.”
However, the board left the possibility open for compromise, stating that if the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) comes ... read more ...

.Org Eyes Leadership Role in IDN Top Level Domain Names -
.Org registry PIR wants to bring best practices to IDN top level domain names.
One of the big questions facing registries of existing top level domain names is how they should pursue Internationalized Domain Name “equivalents” of their domain names when they become available. These so-called IDN.IDN domain names will be available once new gTLDs — such as .nyc and .music — come out.

Reevaluating New Top Level Domain Names -
A look back at my position on new TLDs, 9 months later.
Last May I wrote an editorial titled “Why I’m opposed to new top level domains”. I outlined six reasons that I didn’t like the current proposal for new top level domain names.
Nine months later, I still have many of those same concerns. But I’m also looking forward to the introduction of new top level domain names. Look, everyone who’s pushing for new TLDs is in it for the money. And there’s ... read more ...

Yes, Multiple Top Level Domain Names Add to Confusion -
Duh. More TLDs cause confusion. Perhaps it’s outweighed by the innovation?
This morning I read Wired’s article on ICANN, which discusses new top level domain names.
It quotes David Farber saying “I don’t think that [adding new TLDs] creates innovation. I think that creates rapid confusion.â€
Antony Van Couvering with new TLD service provider Minds + Machines, responded in the comments:
There’s no evidence whatever that people will be confused by ... read more ...

Are Defensive Domain Name Registrations a Myth? -
Study sheds light on how many brand managers register domain names defensively.
Minds + Machines, which offers services to new top level domain name applicants, has released a new study showing how brands register their domain names in newer top level domain names.
The report’s authors certainly have a motivation to push new TLDs forward, but so far this is the most conclusive and detailed report I’ve seen on the subject of defensive registrations. I’d welcome ... read more ...

The Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) is asking ICANN to delay a decision on the so-called “Expressions of Interest” process for new top level domain names.
In a letter dated January 26, GAC Chairman Janis Karklins says that the period of community feedback has been to short and more time is needed to deliberate and fully understand the implications of the EOI process. The chairman ... read more ...

Dot Vegas’ registration goals seem lofty.

Pinky Brand Discusses a Past, Present, and Future of .Mobi -
Pinky Brand explains what’s going on with the .mobi domain name.
From the moment it launched, the .mobi top level domain name has been divisive in the domainer community. The New Top Level Domain Software Problem -
