Brand Owners Write To Dept Of Commerce: Want No Cost URS, Loser Pays Model, TM Blocks & More -
The United States Brand Owner Summit sent to the United States Department of Commerce asking the Government for new protections in the roll out of the new gTLD’s program.
The letter which is called “NEW gTLD RECOMMENDATIONS TO STRENGTHEN SECOND-LEVEL RIGHTS PROTECTION MECHANISMS” was sent to Lawrence E. Top 50 Most Pre-Registered New gTLD’s Domain Names From UnitedDomains.com - UnitedDomains.com an ICANN accredited registrar has taken almost 850,000 “pre-registrations” of new gTLD’s domain names.

MIT Rips ICANN’s Over New gTLD Program: “ICANN’s Boondoggle” - MIT just published a post ripping ICANN for what it calls ICANN’s Boondoggle referring to the new gTLD program.

Melbourne IT Suggests Special Domain Protections For “High At-Risk Marks” In New gTLD’s - Melbourne IT the registrar/brand protection company published a paper that “makes the case that, despite the current protections ICANN has put in place, there is still a set of High At-Risk Marks (HARM) that remain particularly attractive to unscrupulous persons and organizations who will attempt to register these marks at the second level of new gTLDs”.

Directi Looking To Raise $50 Million-$100 Million For New gTLD’s Auctions - According to a story in Vccircle.com, Directi Internet Solutions Pvt Ltd (Directi) is seeking to “secure a hefty sum between US$ 50 – 100 Million to fund its subsidiary Radix FZC“.
Directi through its Radix subsidiary has already allocated $30 Million for its 31 new gTLD applications, according to this story they are seeking additional funds to cover the cost of anticipated auctions for some of the new gTLD’s.

WSJ: Banks Looking To New gTLD’s To Stop Phishing - The WallStretJournal published a story on how banks are looking to using their applied for new gTLD’s to cut down on phishing of bank sites on the net.

ICANN Extends Comment Period For New gTLD’s 45 Days Until Sep 26th - After requests of many groups, ICANN has officially extended the comment period on the new gTLD’s for an additional 45 days.
The new end date is now 26 September 2012.
Its a good move by ICANN, which by eliminating digital archery and going with a one batch application processing system, is basically out to at least June before much else happens.

Maybe Justin Should Have Applied For .Music Instead Of Myspace.com - A BusinessInsider.com article today reminded me its been one year since Justin Timberlake’s invested into MySpace.com
At the time I thought Justin would have been better served if he simply applied for the new gTLD of .Music.
I can’t exactly tell you how, but through representatives very close to Justin I made him aware of the opportunity that a .Music application would have provided, especially since his investment in MySpace.com was really all about music.

BuyDomains Launches BuyDomainsCentral.com Powered By Enom To Take New gTLD Domain Pre-orders - Buydomains.com, which is owned by Name Media, is teaming up with Enom.com, which is owned by Demand Media, to start to take pre-orders or a create a watch list for new gTLD’s domain name registration when they become available.

With The Domain Space Only Growing By 17 Million A Year, Where Will All The Registrations For New gTLD’s Come From? - We know that .com/.net registrations as of the last report sits at 116 million registrations is growing at the rate 8 million new registrations a year.
We also know including the 116 million .com/.net registrations, there are 225 million domains name registered as of March 31, 2012 with 10% or some 20 million new registrations coming since 4th quarter of 2,010.

ICANN On Excess Funds From Fees & Auctions: “We’re Not Going To Give You The Money Back” - In the public forum at the ICANN Meeting, Chairman of ICANN Steve Crocker told the crowd that when it comes to excess funds coming from application fees and auction proceeds, they don’t know what they are going to do with the money, only that the excess money will will not be coming back to the applicants that paid the money.
