Verisign considers Early Access for "IDN .Coms" - Popular model for landrush phase of new TLDs might find its way to Verisign. Are IDN .com owners about to get screwed? - Verisign finds way to sign ICANN contract, but it might come at the expense of IDN investors. [Update: see comment from Verisign at end.] It’s been a long, long wait for owners of internationalized domain names under .com. The idea was that they’d get rights to IDN.IDN-as-transliteration domain names to match their IDN.com names when they came out. So they registered IDN.com domain names and held on to them for a decade, waiting for their investment to pay off. Given that the IDN-as-transliteration ... read more ...

Google AdWords Now Supports Internationalized Domain Names - Advertisers no longer have to show ASCII URLs in their ads. A couple weeks ago I missed an announcement from Google AdWords that it now supports internationalized domain names (IDN) for display and destination URLs on Google ads. This means advertisers will no longer have to show a non-ASCII ad followed by an ASCII domain name. AdWords clients can enter unicode characters for the URLs and Google will verify that it works correctly in both unicode and punycode. The ... read more ...

India Gets 7 IDN County Code Domain Names - India gets seven IDN ccTLDS and more good news for IDN domain name supporters. One thing I learned on my trip to India earlier this month is that there are a lot of local languages. This week ICANN approved delegation of seven (yes, seven) internationalized county code domain names to National Internet Exchange of India. The delegated ccTLDs include भारत (“Bharat”), encoded as “xn--h2brj9c”; بھارت “Bharat”), encoded ... read more ...

IDN Top Level Domain Names in a Nutshell - A simple primer to IDN top level domains, courtesy of ICANN. One of the reasons many people are “turned off” by internationalized domain names is that they don’t understand how they work. Admittedly, much of the information about IDNs to date has been described in a technical matter, turning people off even more. So I was delighted to see a blog post from ICANN’s Tina Dam titled “IDN Usability“. I highly recommend reading it, as is clearly explains IDN ... read more ...

An Historic Day: First IDN Top Level Domain Names Go Live - First IDN top level domains hit the web. Today was a historic day for domain names and internationalized domain names, as the first three non-Latin script top level domain names went live. All three are country code top level domains under the IDN ccTLD fast track program. ICANN has provided an example of an already functioning site using an IDN ccTLD: وزارة-الأتصالات.مصر If you’re like me, when going to that ... read more ...

Commentless Comment Periods during ICANN - 9 comment periods end tomorrow — but commenting is light. Nine different open comment subjects at ICANN close tomorrow — and four of them don’t have a single comment. Despite comment period overload, I’m surprised to see certain communities not getting involved in the process. For example, two of the subjects that don’t have any comments concern Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). ICANN’s decisions around IDNs will greatly impact those domainers who ... read more ...

Poor IDNs. The Media Will Never Understand. - Recent coverage of internationalized domain names was erroneous. They sky is falling! The sky is falling! Or so the headlines read. Last week I mentioned an article in The London Times about the introduction of domain names with non-Roman characters. As I noted, the article was completely wrong. It said that non-Roman characters will be allowed for the first time “to the left of the dot”, i.e. the second level domain name. Tell that to the people who’ve ... read more ...

Russians Not Keen on IDN Top Level Domain - Story shines light on fears of IDNs, but it’s really an issue of ccTLDs. The reaction was swift and positive — finally, after years of typing in Latin-based top level domains, people who use different character sets would soon be able to type in new top level domain names in their own alphabets. What’s not to love about that? Apparently a lot. A story in yesterday’s New York Times says that many Russians are wary of their government’s plans to introduce ... read more ...

Will IDN Top Level Domains Kill Existing IDN Domain Names? - You’re right, there is no written guarantee from ICANN on any of this; nor will you see any, and there’s a good reason why this is, and that’s because it’s not their problem or concern. The only stipulation ICANN have set is that surfers must not get confused, hence where the much used ICANN phrase “not confusingly similar” has come from. For example, there is no way on earth a new cctld .teevee would be allowed, because it sounds like an existing extension (.tv) I am an ... read more ...

How The Japanese Avoid Domain Names - Japanese find ways to navigate web even before IDNs. In an article titled “Domain names? We don’t need no domain names”, IDG News Service writer Martyn Williams explains how the Japanese use the search box in lieu of domain names. Instead of typing Google.com into their browsers, they search for Google at Yahoo. On the Yahoo site they type in “Google” to get taken to the home page, bypassing the address bar in their browsers and registering another search ... read more ...

Risks Remain for IDN Investors - New IDN TLDs may pose problems for second level IDN holders. For years, domain names were only available in roman characters. Domain names in these characters don’t make a lot of sense to web users who’s primary languages don’t use these characters. But then so-called International Domain Names (IDNs) using non-roman characters became available. Domainers jumped on board and invested heavily. Many of these domains get solid type-in traffic or have been turned ... read more ...
