ICANN May Seek Contracts with UDRP Providers -
No discussion at board meeting, but contractual issue is on the table.
What did ICANN discuss about UDRP providers during its board meeting last Thursday? Did it discuss Czech Arbitration Court using “supplemental rules” to change the structure of UDRP, as I predicted? Did it discuss the lack of contracts with UDRP providers?
Well, it really didn’t discuss anything. It ran out of time.
The “preliminary report” from the meeting states that time constraints ... read more ...

Commentless Comment Periods during ICANN -
9 comment periods end tomorrow — but commenting is light.
Nine different open comment subjects at ICANN close tomorrow — and four of them don’t have a single comment.
Despite comment period overload, I’m surprised to see certain communities not getting involved in the process. For example, two of the subjects that don’t have any comments concern Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). ICANN’s decisions around IDNs will greatly impact those domainers who ... read more ...

ICANN Chair: May be “Ready to Move” on Uniform Rapid Suspension -
ICANN session on trademark protection suggests URS is close to being finalized.
Of all of the trademark protections being discussed for the launch of new top level domain names, it looks like Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) may be the closest to being approved. Uniform Rapid Suspension is a sort of “light UDRP” for domain names deemed to be clear cut cases of cybersquatting.
During the first day of sessions at ICANN’s Nairobi meeting, ICANN Chairman of the Board ... read more ...

My favorite quote from the article by Beckstrom is in response to the issue about the new gTLD’s and trademark holders complaints that they will have to spend too much to buy domain names in each of the new TLDs.
Beckstrom says its not ICANN’s job to pre-emptively police trademarks.

ICANN Bonuses Not Tied to Long Term Revenue, New TLDs -
Bonuses mostly based on short term milestones.
When ICANN released its compensation ideology and information about the top five salaries last month, I wasn’t all that taken aback by the salaries. What got me curious was the bonus structure. Bonuses drive behavior, and bonuses tied to poor goals drive poor behavior. I have a patent related to goal alignment, so it’s something I’m familiar with.
During an exchange at ICANN’s Cairo meeting between Michael ... read more ...
