The Week Ahead in Domain Names - A look at a busy week in the domain name industry. This is going to be a big week for domain names. Here’s some stuff to keep your eyes on: ICANN is meeting in Cartagena, Colombia. This is going to be a big meeting. On Friday the board will vote on its way forward for new top level domain names. There’s a lot of pressure — including input from the U.S. Department of Commerce — that could slow things down. But there’s also a lot of pressure to go forward. ... read more ...

1/2 Hour After Entering Colombia, we Have Over a Million In My Pocket - Talk about the land of golden opportunity. Less 1/2 hour after touching down on the ground in Colombia, I was walking around with over a million in my pocket. 1.7 Million to be exact after I exchanged $1,000 US Dollars and got back 1.7 million Colombian Pesos. Using Google’s current exchange rate I should have gotten around 1.9 million Pesos so I got a good and proper screwing at the airport,  but still walked out with many 50,000 bills. Hey the way the US is printing money it may not be that ... read more ...

Beckstrom: ICANN Doesn’t Take Down Websites - Over the last week I have gotten several comments on my various posts on the domain name seizures with people asking what ICANN position is on them. Well Rod Beckstrom CEO of ICANN has written about it on his blog and the answers the question quite clearly: That is the titled of the blog post which goes on to say: “” There have been many questions in recent days stemming from actions by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) in shutting down dozens of web sites. As we have ... read more ...

The ICANN Meeting That Looked Like A Dud, Is Suddently Looking Like A Battle - When I started asking people a few weeks ago whether they were going to attend the ICANN meeting in Colombia that starts today, the vast majority of the responses I got was something along the lines of: “no I’m not going.  Nothing is really on the agenda or going to happen at this one I’m waiting for SF in March”. Well all of a sudden after the events of this week, this ICANN meeting looks like it might be VERY interesting. After all in the past 7 days we have seen the US government seize ... read more ...

Breaking News: US Government Opposes Launch of New gTLD Program in Cartagena - ICANN acknowledged on their blog today, that they received a letter today from the US Department of Commerce opposing the introduction of the new gTLD’s program in Cartagena. In its letter to ICANN,  The Department of Commerce writes: (pdf) “I am concern over the apparent failure of ICANN to carry out its obligations as specified in the “Affirmations of Commitments”. The letter goes on to chastise ICANN for not completing the economic study it agreed to conduct to evaluate the potential ... read more ...

ICANN Releases Another Economic Study on New TLDs - New study finds little chance for competition to .com, but some benefits from new TLDs. Just a day after the U.S. Department of Commerce chastised ICANN for not undertaking a full economic study of the costs and benefits of new top level domains, ICANN has released phase two of its latest study (pdf). A summary of the findings: “…we find that additional generic, unrestricted TLDs using the Latin alphabet would be unlikely to provide significant additional competition ... read more ...

U.S. Government Calls for Delay to New Top Level Domain Names - Department of Commerce says ICANN board should not approve guidebook next week. In a scathing letter published today on ICANN’s web site, The United States Department of Commerce asked ICANN to not approve the launch of new TLDs during its meeting in Cartagena next week. The letter, signed by Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information Lawrence Strickling, says that ICANN is not living up to its agreements in the Affirmation of Commitments. ICANN Gains $4.3M on Investments, War Chest Tops $60 Million - ICANN’s war chest continues to grow. ICANN released details of its FY 2010 financial year (which ran through June 2010) today. The non-profit had revenues of $65.8 million and expenses of $58.6 million. Revenues were up 9.2% from FY 2009 and expenses grew 14.3%. Olympics Threaten to Sue ICANN. Who Missed a Meeting? - Olympics say they’ll sue ICANN, but they were supposed to meet with ICANN earlier this year to hash our their differences. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has again informed ICANN that it will file a lawsuit if its trademarks are not added to a restrictions list for new domain names and if other protections aren’t instituted. Back in April 2009 the IOC first threatened to sue ICANN over the introduction of new top level domain names. In March of ... read more ...

What in a World Will ICANN Do with $100 Million Cash Next Year? - Can ICANN handle 9 figures of cash? $185,000 per application. Let’s say 550 applications for new to level domain names. That’s $101.75 million in cash coming in ICANN’s door next year. That’s a lot of money. What will it do with the cash that it doesn’t immediately spend on application processing? How much of this will now be considered “cost recovery”? How much will be reserved for resulting lawsuits? Don’t get me wrong, I think it should cost ... read more ...

Is ICANN’s 3 Strikes Loophole on Purpose? - ICANN’s three strikes rule is so full of holes that you have to wonder if the holes are on purpose. One of the major changes to the so-called “Proposed Final” applicant guidebook is a definition of what a pattern of “bad faith in regard to domain name registrations” is. Applicants that have shown this bad faith pattern are barred from applying. The new rule slipped into the latest version: if you have three or more UDRP, ACPA, or other equivalent legislation ... read more ...

ICANN New Guidebook: Terrorists Now Ok: Domainers 3 Strikes & You’re Out - In the new Guidebook issued by ICANN yesterday, (pdf)  if you’re a domain holder that loses 3 or more UDRP (yes they are so fair and well grounded), you will be in the same class as Convicted Murderers, Rapists and child molesters. Yes it would be a bad joke but its true. Under the new ICANN guidebook (pages 1-17/1-19) if you lose 3 UDRP’s you’re disqualified from being a “major shareholder” of a new gTLD registry, or being a partner, officer, director, of a new gTLD registry. It doesn’t ... read more ...

Our Take On The ICANN Registry/Registrar Decision: The Big Guys Win/The Small Guys Lose - Yesterday ICANN shocked the domain world when it announced it would not prohibit registrars from owning registries and registries from owning registrars. Up to yesterday all the guidebooks on the new gTLD’s and the general consensus was that ICANN would limit cross ownership of registrars and registries by to a certain minority position of somewhere between 2%-15%. (You can read about some the reaction in the domain world here). So having a day to reflect on this move, I see it as only meaning ... read more ...

WTR: 81% Of Global Brands Applying For New gTLD’s Will Make It, Rather Than The .Com Their Master Brand - According to a study conducted by World Trademark Review (WTR) magazine found that of those brands planning to apply to run a new generic top-level domain (gTLD), 81% plan on making their gTLD their master brand. I think most in the domain industry believe that if global brands apply for their own gTLD they would still use their .com as their main internet presence. However if this study is correct you might see Apple promote .Apple instead of Apple.com. If hundreds of global brands go in this direction ... read more ...

Process, Not Technical Limitations, will Throttle New Top Level Domains - 200-1,000 new top level domains could be added in first year. ICANN has released two documents related to the number of new top level domain names that may be added to the web per year. The first document is technical in nature, covering how many gTLDs can be added to the root in any year. I previously wrote that it was determined 1,000 new TLDs could be added to the root in a year without problems. But after reading this report it’s clear that 1,000 was used ... read more ...

Coming to America: Mark your Calendar for Mar 2011 - ICANN meeting coming to America next Spring. For the first time in a long time ICANN will hold its international meeting in the United States March 13-18, 2011. That means U.S. residents won’t have to make a trip that involves three plane hops and 12 different time zones to attend the meeting. You probably don’t pay attention to ICANN policy that much if you’re a domainer. You aren’t excited by policy. You probably don’t care much, either. That has ... read more ...

ICANN Coming To America With $2M To Spend in Mar 2011 - ICANN Just announced today that it will be holding its next meeting after Colombia in December 2010, in San Francisco in March 2011. According to the announcement ICANN will have a budget of just short of $2 Million to spend on the March meeting: “”Resolved the Board approves San Francisco, California as the location of the ICANN 2011 North America Meeting to be held from 13-18 March 2011, with a budget not to exceed US$1.941M” Sounds like it should be a party, I mean very expensive meeting. ICANN To Review .Jobs Decision - .Jobs expansion plans hit a snag, but it’s probably minor. Following an outcry from the online job board industry, ICANN’s Board Governance Committee (BGC) agreed to reconsider opening up the .jobs space carte blanche. I doubt anything will come of this reconsideration request, even if the BGC recommends to the Board that it reverse its decision. We all know what happened after ICANN’s board reversed its original decision on .xxx. That issue is still carrying ... read more ...

ICANN Ombudsman Fails to Hide Story About Air Canada Argument - ICANN Ombudsman tries to get name taken out of public record in air travel dispute. Earlier this year DNW wrote about ICANN Ombudsman Frank Fowlie and a complaint he filed against Air Canada. A Canadian Transportation Panel found that Fowlie “engaged in abusive and offensive behaviour” on the flight. Needless to say, the complaint made Fowlie look bad. After granting an interview to the Ottawa Citizen and the media attention that ensued, Fowlie tried to get ... read more ...
