Irony Alert: Jillian Michaels Protests Treatment of Elephants - No joke: Go Daddy girl to protest alongside PETA in defense of circus elephants. How’s this for irony: fitness guru and GoDaddy Girl Jillian Michaels is joining with PETA to protest Ringling Bros. circus and its treatment of elephants. I’m not kidding. In case you aren’t familiar with the story, GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons shot an elephant in Africa this year. It’s not the first time he’s done it, but the story went viral this time and a number of people ... read more ...

In Case You Missed It, Friday Was Not a Slow News Day in a Domain Industry - Biggest domain name company transaction ever announced just before the U.S. holiday. The Friday before a holiday weekend is usually a slow news day. But I heard some whispers Friday that Go Daddy was going to make a big announcement, hence my tweet around noon. Indeed, a few hours later Go Daddy announced that it took an investment from KKR, Silver Lake, and Technology Crossover Ventures. I talked with GoDaddy founder Bob Parsons Friday evening. Since most of my ... read more ...

Go Daddy Could Shake Up Domain Registry Market - Registrar could take a big chunk of back end services business for new top level domain names. Last week new TLD consultancy Minds + Machines announced flat rate registry services pricing of $100,000 per year. Apparently this is the first time there’s been “transparent” pricing in the registry business, although the pricing doesn’t apply to super-generic top level domains (i.e. ones that get a lot of volume). Although this might lay it out on the table a ... read more ...

My Thoughts on a Go Daddy Buyout - What a Go Daddy sale would mean. If the chatter is to be believed, The Go Daddy Group could announce a multi-billion dollar buyout sometime this week. While neither Go Daddy nor the buyers will confirm or deny this, it’s typical for bankers involved in the deal to leak news like this. It helps bring other potential suitors to the table and puts pressure on the buyers to close the deal. Go Daddy has been shopping itself around unofficially for a while. Word is ... read more ...

Go Daddy Sued for Sending Domain Renewal Notices - Does sending renewal reminders violate patents? This isn’t meant to be a shock headline. It’s true. WhitServe LLC has filed a patent infringement lawsuit (pdf) against GoDaddy.com based on the renewal notices it sends to customers. WhitServe says the method by which Go Daddy sends these notices and allows customers to renew their expiring domain names violates two of its patents: -US Patent 5,895,468 for System Automating Delivery Of Professional Services -US ... read more ...

Bob Parsons to PETA: Look in a Mirror - Parsons tweets about PETA hypocrisy. After Go Daddy founder and CEO Bob Parsons killed an elephant in Zimbabwe, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was quick to pounce on him. The company moved its domain names from Go Daddy to a rival domain name registrar. But Parsons won’t let PETA get away that easy. Today he tweeted the following to his 34,000 followers: The first link is to a PETA story about “Deadly Destinations“, which blasts places like Disney’s ... read more ...

Latest New TLD Applicant Guidebook Still Disses Go Daddy, Demand Media - Companies still fall victim to anti-cybersquatting rule for new TLD applicants. The latest (but certainly not final) version of the new top level domain name guidebook still includes a provision that, at least by the spirit of the clause, would prevent Go Daddy and Demand Media (NYSE: DMD) from applying for new top level domain names. Section 1.2.1 of the May 20 release (large pdf) includes a laundry list of reasons why an applicant would be barred from registering ... read more ...

Priced Domains Can Sell in Go Daddy Auctions, Too - Premium Listings can also sell within Go Daddy Auctions — and at a lower commission. I recently received a sale notice for one of the domains I listed at Go Daddy as a Premium Listing. I assumed it was a standard sale through Go Daddy’s registration path. But a couple days later I got another email and realized the sale was actually on the Go Daddy Auctions site. It was still a fixed price sale based on my Premium Listing price, but occurred through the auction ... read more ...

Go Daddy Starts Featuring Auctions in Registration Path - More exposure for domains listed on Go Daddy Auctions. Go Daddy has started to show domain names that are listed on its auction platform to users searching for available domain names. PETA Plays Into Bob Parson’s Hands Over Elephant Hunting - PETA is closing its Go Daddy account over elephant hunting incident. Poor Bob Parsons. The Go Daddy founder is about to lose a few hundred domain name registrations from its client People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). I’m sure he’s just shaking in his boots. The group is enraged about an elephant hunting video he took in Zimbabwe. The video caught attention after being posted at online petition site Change.org. Nevermind that Parsons posted a similar ... read more ...

Go Daddy Premium Listings New Business Model for Domainers - Some domainers get bulk of revenue from Go Daddy sales service. I’ve written before about my success with Go Daddy Premium Listings that place your domain names for sale directly in front of buyers in the Go Daddy registration path. But with only a few hundred domains at Go Daddy my sample size is small. While at DOMAINfest last week I spoke to a few people who have large portfolios at Go Daddy. Two of them told me Go Daddy Premium Listings have basically become ... read more ...

A Look during Go Daddy’s Growth (in Numbers) - An official look at Go Daddy’s revenue numbers. I still remember a conversation just before the Super Bowl in 2005. I was eating lunch with a bunch of techies and the topic of Super Bowl commercials came up. Someone asked “who is this Go Daddy company, anyway?” Flash forward to 2010. If you ask someone on the street where they would go to register a domain name, they’ll likely say “Go Daddy”. About half of all newly-registered domains are registered ... read more ...
