Expired Domain Name sales results - Joseph Peterson reviews the past week in expired domain name sales. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, rather than explain GoDaddy’s $6.8k sale of DivaZoo.com, let me just say, “See for yourself!”   This product line sells at mega-retailers like Amazon and Walmart but apparently has a wide distribution in smaller home decorating stores also. So if that brand is the buyer, then the domain’s price makes sense. (Note: I stripped the link’s ... read more ...

Sony forgets to replenish domain name, takes down online gaming use SOE.com - Sony Online Entertainment goes down thanks to expired domain name. Sony forgot to renew a key domain name, SonyOnline.net, which resulted in an outage on its popular Sony Online Entertainment game network found at SOE.com. While SOE.com did not expire, its nameservers are set to SonyOnline.net. When the latter went down, so did SOE.com. The Register surmised that it was probably a simple DNS issue that took the site down, rather than an expiration*. Whois records ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report for this week - Last week, the expired domain market posted gains of …  Well, nobody knows. Without any cost basis to refer to, who can say whether it’s a bull or a bear? In any event, the former domain owner gains nothing from the sale of a domain that expires, sells, and transfers. Right? Gains.com, however, did finish at NameJet with bids up to $25.5k.  So it looks as though the expired domain market is pretty robust. Other NameJet auctions were more modest. At under $1000, ... read more ...

This week’s Expired Domain Name Roundup - Joseph Peterson reports on the past week in expired domain name sales. What’s an UNCH?  And how many of them would Dr. Seuss need to sell in order to recoup the $11.6k spent on UNCHS.org?  Well, actually, some 36 years ago, the United Nations established its Centre for Human Settlements.  Perhaps now they’ve finally secured a matching .ORG domain for their work on urban planning, upgrading slums, and so forth.  Meanwhile, the corresponding .COM remains ... read more ...

Spy on recently backordered domain names with new service - SnoopNames monitors last-minute domain name backorders. A new service called SnoopNames claims to enable you to spy on other peoples’ backorders in order to backorder potentially valuable domain names. The site monitors various expired domain sites to spot initial backorders placed on domains in the last 24 hours before the cut off. The idea is to let the “crowd” help you find domain names worth backordering. Of course, anyone who waits until the last day to ... read more ...

A “High” week for lapsed domain name sales - “High” is perched high on the list of last week’s expired domain auctions — specifically, the French word, “Haut”, which sold at NameJet for nearly $5k.  Another French four-letter — this time a .NET — follows with “Vide”, meaning “empty”, “blank”, “void”. Continuing with the LLLLs, AskE.com went for $3.3k; and at least another 3 sold over $1k.   Of these, OKKK.com is an interesting specimen.  Personally, I wouldn’t be OK ... read more ...

Retweet.com Resold and other lapsed domain sales - People inject new words into language constantly.  “Tweet” has taken on new meaning thanks to Twitter, while “Retweet” would have meant nothing a decade ago.  Yet in that short space of time, this formerly unknown verb cannot only become commonplace but even sell for over $24k. A dangerous term to own, possibly.  Moreover, an interesting question for IP attorneys.  What is Twitter’s claim on a word associated exclusively with their brand but perhaps ... read more ...

Taking a demeanour a May’s NameJet sales - An deeper look at some of last month’s sales on NameJet. If you didn’t catch Andrew Allemann’s insightful take on April sales at NameJet, it’s worth a read.  This time, I’m filling in with some observations on last month’s sales — “observations” being a euphemism for knee jerk reactions and blind spots! Out of 76 sales, I’ve picked 10 to look at: Liao.com $100,000 – Mentioning this one would be obligatory for the price alone.  Not only is ... read more ...

EDR: Results and research from over 150 lapsed domain name auctions - In this week’s Expired Domain Report (EDR), Joseph Peterson gives the rundown on over 150 expired domain name auctions. “Smart” is the word of the day, judging by the top 2 expired auction results from GoDaddy.  It’s not surprising, really.  Computing has infiltrated our lives, and smart phones are conquering both the younger generation and the developing world.  But although the #1 spot is about mobile tech, the #2 domain, SmartRoom.com, seems to be ... read more ...

EDR: A demeanour during 150 lapsed domain name auctions from a past week - This week’s Expired Domain Report from Joseph Peterson has close to 150 expired domain name auctions from last week. As always, some of the prices paid are head-scratchers. One thing organizations are good at … is dropping the ball.  Take this week’s top-selling expired domain auction, for instance. MobiLoans.com seems to have purchased MobileLoans.com in December, 2011.  Last April, the domain expired; and now NameJet has sold it for a whopping $30k.  Although ... read more ...

Tadpole.com sells for $20k and .us compared to new TLDs - In this week’s Expired Domain Report, Joseph Peterson reports on the sale of Tadpole.com, plus a comparison of .us domain sales to the asking prices on new TLD premium domains. Once upon a time — specifically, once upon 22 April , 1992 — there hatched a Tadpole.  Like many a domain, it began as a primitive website but mutated as it matured.  Tadpole Computers supplied the world with “rugged … UNIX work stations, thin client laptops, and lightweight ... read more ...

EDR: Over 120 lapsed domain sales formula and analysis - This week’s Expired Domain Report (EDR) covers over ten dozen domain names sold over the past week, plus a look at the week ahead. What’s the value of a good book?  Or a piece of art?  If you thought you couldn’t put a number on such subjective, intangible components of human culture, guess again!  At least in .COM, a good book is worth $565 and a piece of art $616. Domains are often compared to real estate because they’re a finite resource people pay ... read more ...

EDR: Guru renewals, NameJet, GoDaddy and more - In this week’s Expired Domain Report (EDR), Joseph Peterson takes a look at renewals of domains including the term “guru”, hits and misses in this week’s expired domain sales, and some domains to backorder for next week. Probably the most significant recent news for the expired domain market has been the emergence of DropCatch.com.  The previously closed system instrumental in building HugeDomains’s massive portfolio is now open for backorders.  Some ... read more ...

A glance of what will occur when new TLDs strike their initial renovation date? - Joseph Peterson considers what will happen when new TLDs come around for renewal. 2014 will be remembered — by those conscious of the domain industry at least — as the year of the TLD experiment. To what extent extensions such as .GURU, .PHOTOGRAPHY, .RICH, .LONDON, or .中文网 catch on with the general public remains to be seen. For a year, the question has been hotly debated. But it’s not a question; it’s hundreds of distinct questions, since hundreds ... read more ...

DropCatch.com enters a lapsed domain business with a bang - As it expands its private beta, DropCatch.com is off to a fast start: it caught and auctioned off Bespoke.com for $18,805 today. When the team behind HugeDomains launched its domain name registrar NameBright last year, it quickly became clear that a lot of people felt animosity toward the company’s expired domain business. Here’s just one of the comments submitted on Domain Name Wire: When they stop taking all the decent domain names on the drop I may consider ... read more ...

EDR: Weird lapsed domain sales (partially) explained - This week’s Expired Domain Report (EDR) explains why some domains sell for what they do, plus a preview of domains you might want to backorder. Why do people bid on expired domain auctions? The number of bidders and the prices are often surprisingly high; so it’s a fair question. FingerYoga.com is a case in point. Who bought this 12-year-old domain isn’t yet clear. But there were 83 bids as high as $2,227. Were those bidders looking to create a new website? ... read more ...

My thoughts on final month’s NameJet domain sales - Some great deals and some questionable purchases. NameJet just released a list of sales over $2,000 from April. Here are my thoughts on some of them…the last one being the most interesting. Certifications.com $17,100 – I like this domain. There are thousands of certifications people can get, and many of them come with a fee. I’m not sure how many are offered online, but this domain could be a fantastic directory with an affiliate or lead gen model. Through.com ... read more ...

Expired domains: head, shoulder, knees and toes - Some ship has sunk; and as the cargo it carried sinks below the surface, domain resellers pick over its contents like fish seeking edible morsels from among the debris. The vessel’s captain may not know this goes on, having given up for lost whatever was in his ship’s hold. But we know. And we know too that the flavor of the sinking scraps will vary day to day, depending on who is throwing excess baggage overboard or who has sprung a leak. Often, whether a conscious ... read more ...

Web.com paid $7.4 million for SnapNames - Web.com paid $7.4 million for SnapNames and hopes for a revenue contribution of $5 million this year. Web.com paid $7.4 million cash to acquire SnapNames from KeyDrive, the company revealed on its investor conference call yesterday. The company described it as a “small tuck-in acquisition” at a financially attractive price. Web.com expects SnapNames to generate about $5 million in revenue for its period of ownership in 2014. This week’s Expired Domain Report - [Editor’s note: this is Domain Name Wire’s first weekly expired domain name report, written by Joseph Peterson. Some SnapNames-caught domains to be managed during NetworkSolutions - Domains caught by SnapName’s own registrars will be managed through Network Solutions.
