Get prepared for a good .info drop - If you use a drop service to catch expiring domains, get ready for the list of available drops to balloon over the next few months! The .info list will be flooded with domains that people registered for FREE about this time last year. You may recall that .info registry owner Afilias started offering 25 free domains to all comers. Most of the .info domains registered were subpar, since all of the good ones were already taken. And I suspect most owners of these ... read more ...

GoDaddy aftermarket – we finally got my domain - On May 6, I wrote about winning an expired domain auction on GoDaddy’s new TDNAM.com. On June 6, I wrote about receiving an e-mail from GoDaddy saying the domain was mine, although it turns out it wasn’t yet. Today, about 6 weeks after winning the auction, I’m proud to say I finally own the domain! I’m still confused as to why GoDaddy is auctioning names off so far in advance. Other services that have direct registration drops auction the domains when the ... read more ...

GoDaddy domain name auction — hiccup! - OK, apparently the e-mail I received from GoDaddy stating that the domain I bid and paid for a month ago is now mine was a little premature… After not finding the domain in my account, I e-mailed GoDaddy’s customer service. They first sent a generic support email to me saying that domains can take 60 days from the date of auction before they become yours. Thanks, but that’s not what I asked. I asked why the domain wasn’t in my account when I received an ... read more ...

GoDaddy’s failing domains (my experience) - A month ago, I posted about bidding on and winning a domain in GoDaddy’s “The Domain Name Aftermarket”. Yesterday I finally received notice from GoDaddy that the name is mine. Or is it? I can’t find it anywhere in my GoDaddy account. I e-mailed support; we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, since bidding on the domain its backlinks and overall value has decreased. Perhaps that is GoDaddy’s goal. By selling domains before they are kicked out by ... read more ...

Another large 3-character domain name sale - 3 character domain names continue to sell and the prices keep going higher. (See OLT.com Sells for $93,000.) Users paid $23,000 for TravelPages.com and $18,500 for PollyPockets.com. In the .info world, it came to light that Medicine.info sold last year for $25,000, making it one of the most expensive ... read more ...

Are Overture register numbers being manipulated? - Domain names that get type-in traffic are among the most valuable on the resale market. To calculate the number of type-ins a domain name receives, domain buyers use the Overture inventory tool. By typing in a domain name (including the extension, e.g. domainnamewire.com), people can see how many times people searched for the domain name the previous month. If 50 people typed the domain+extension in a search engine by accident, many more must have typed in in their ... read more ...

Testing GoDaddy’s new lapsed domain auctions - I placed some bids on GoDaddy’s new TDNAM, which right now consists mostly of expiring domains once registered at GoDaddy. I just “won” one domain today. When placing a bid on an expiring domain you are presented with a disclaimer that says the domain can be renewed by the previous registrant. It’s somewhat unclear when you take ownership of the domain. Here’s the email I got from GoDaddy: Dear Andrew, Congratulations! You have placed the winning bid ... read more ...

GoDaddy places 60 day reason on failing domains - GoDaddy is now auctioning off its own expiring domains (see this posting). However, it appears they are placing a 60 day hold on all expired domains won at auction before the winner gets control. This certainly reduces its value!! Since GoDaddy has more active .com domains than any other registrar, GoDaddy’s new expired domain system will send major ripples through the expiring domain market. With Network Solution and Bulk Register’s expired domains going to ... read more ...

Yahoo inventory offer could change lapsed domain names market - A story on News.com discusses Yahoo’s new free web page offering to local businesses. The free web page also comes with a listing in Yahoo’s local directory. This make sense for Yahoo on a couple fronts. First, they are trying to build their local directory. Second, these local businesses might use Yahoo’s advertising products in the future. How does this affect the expired domain name market? Right now, people buy expiring domains that are still listed ... read more ...

Pool.com gives in to patron vigour for auction method - Candadian expired domain drop catcher Pool.com has given in to customer pressure and changed its auction system. A few months ago, Pool instituted a two-phase auction system. If more than one person ordered the same backorder and Pool snagged it, a sealed auction occurred. The top two bidders in the sealed auction then went to a standard auction. The process took a long time, and was frustrating for users. Pool just announced that it is switching back to a standardy ... read more ...

New sell for domain names launches - A new secondary domain name market option is now available at the registrar level. The Global Domain Name Exchange (GDNX) is an exchange created for and supporting the valuation and transfer of previously registered or held domain names. Its membership is open to ICANN-accredited registrars and registries. Information about GDNX can be found at GDNX.org. This looks promising, but note that this is not a new front end service for the typical domain name owner. Instead, ... read more ...

Snapnames signs adult new disdainful registrar - Snapnames has added another exclusive registrar to its list, ItsYourDomain. As an exclusive registrar, domains names in ItsYourDomain’s system will not follow the regular drop cycle. Instead, they will be released exclusively to Snapnames’ customers before they are deleted. Impact: Snapnames continues to corner the market for exclusive registrar agreements. This puts other drop services like Pool and enom at serious risk unless they strike exclusive deals ... read more ...

Google’s domain name ambitions turn clearer - Ever since Google became an ICANN accredited domain name registrar but announed that the company doesn’t plan to register domains, rumors have swirled about what Google’s intentions are. After hearing representatives of Google and the search industry speak at Search Engine Strategies NYC last week, I have a clearer picture of what Google wants to do. My first guess was mostly correct. Google will use its status as a registrar to better mine the WhoIs database ... read more ...
