Afternic Hits Long Drive with DrivingRanges.com - Afternic gets a big win with for its expired domains program. It’s been several months since Afternic announced it would begin auctioning expiring domains. I’ve played around with Afternic’s expired domain auctions, but until this weekend most of the auctions have ended for less than a few hundred dollars. This past Saturday that changed: an expired domain auction for DrivingRanges.com ended at $7,455. More importantly, it received 46 bids from about a dozen ... read more ...

How Did Pool Score Shoppers.com? A Glitch. - Pool sold Shoppers.com for over $166,000 this week, but the name should have been exclusive to NameJet. [Updated 10:24 CST] Pool.com landed a whale this week, catching Shoppers.com and selling it for $166,000 through its auction. Although the value of the domain is debatable, the bigger question is how Pool landed the domain since it was registered at Network Solutions, which has an exclusive relationship with NameJet for expired domains. One rumor was that the domain ... read more ...

How to Buy Expired Domains during Afternic - Afternic’s new expired domain service provides opportunity to get expired domains without much competition. Expired domain catchers that are tired of bidding wars at SnapNames and NameJet may want to check out Afternic’s expired domain auctions. I first wrote about the new service in December, but domains finally started going to auction in late January. Much like other services, Afternic expired auctions require you to preorder domain names. I preordered a ... read more ...

Domain Name News Bytes for Oct 4 - Little “bytes” of news from the domain name world. There’s a lot going on in the domain name world right now. Here are a few stories that have fallen through the cracks. Roger Collins has left the building, calling it quits at Name Media. Collins was General Manager of Afternic, and brought the company back from death after buying the domain name from Register.com. He sold Afternic to Name Media in November. Roger’s brother, Michael, left Afternic earlier ... read more ...

Network Solutions to Launch Domain Name Auction Service? - Trademark creates suspicions about Network Solutions’ plans. Network Solutions has applied for a trademark on “NameJet”. According to the application, filed on September 24, NameJet’s trademark class includes: “On-line auction services; on-line auction services featuring domain names; on-line auction services for businesses, consumers, domain name holders; domain name registration and sales services; on-line bidding services featuring domain names; domain ... read more ...

The Domain Guru Talks About Valuable Names, IDNs - Lee Hodgson, who owns Domain Guru, talks about shutting down ValuableNames.com and where he sees value in the domain name market. Depending on whom you asked, Lee Hodgson was either the greatest guy in the world or the bane of your existence in 2001. That’s when he started publishing a series of articles about the domain drop on SitePoint. He outlined how and when the dropped worked, giving ordinary Joes the chance to participate. So how did Hodgson get involved ... read more ...

Domain Name News Bytes – Jun 11, 2007 - There’s so much going on with domains right now…here’s a summary of news that has slipped through the cracks. Yet Another article from the mainstream press titled “Masters of their Domains“. Seriously, someone should have trademarked that term. (Paul Sloan of Business 2.0 owns the domain name, proving that he “gets” this domain name thing.) This time it’s The Canadian Financial Post which tries to figure out why there are so many big time domainers ... read more ...

Oversee.net To Acquire SnapNames - Domain company Oversee.net buys expired domain leader SnapNames. Just a few short years ago SnapNames was selling expired domains for $60 each. As it pushed for the domain wait listing service it would have been a political problem to use competitors’ auction models. It has since matched their model, auctioning off domains to the highest bidder while also forging exclusive arrangements with registrars to auction their domains. SnapNames has grown rapidly as a ... read more ...

Survey: SnapNames Still Tops for Expired Domains - SnapNames is the most popular expired domain marketplace with 47% of the vote. You probably don’t need a survey to tell you which expired domain service is most popular. Just look at the 100 biggest domain sales of 2006: 15 of them are from SnapNames, including Jasmin.com at $310,250. Competitor Pool’s highest sale was $19,500. SnapNames has cornered the market on expired domain names by striking exclusive agreements with registrars such as Network Solutions ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name? Unexpected Check. - The original registrant of an expired domain name at Network Solutions gets a check in the mail. I just read a good post from Domainer’s Gazette, a new domain name blog. (It’s great to see the myriad of new blogs related to domain names. Each has its own personality and perspective.) The author had a domain name at Network Solutions that he let expire. It sold on SnapNames for about $1,000 and Network Solutions is sending him a check for $83. Network Solutions’ ... read more ...

Chinese Domain Owners Lose .Coms Because of Earthquakes - China is reporting that Chinese citizens lost 10,000 domain names due to expiration lapses because of communications problems. China’s state run press says that earthquakes off Taiwan last month severed a communication to the internet. As a result, over 10,000 domain name registrations lapsed because their owners could not connect to the internet to renew the domains. The event may be considered an “act of God” which may give those who lost domains an avenue ... read more ...

SnapNames to auction off non-expiring domains - SnapNames, the most popular expiring domain marketplace, will begin auctioning off domains that aren’t expiring. Expiring domains sell for a premium at SnapNames, thanks to auction frenzy. Domains that receive little attention while they are registered suddenly sell for $10,000, $20,000, or more. SnapNames is efficient and it’s much easier to buy domains at SnapNames than to individually contact domain owners before domains expire, even though you will likely ... read more ...

Kansas county lets domain name lapse - Reno County in Kansas didn’t renew its domain name, creating headaches for its operations. It’s a good thing Reno County is a small county. (The rural Kansas county had about 65,000 residents in 2000.) If it were larger, you can imagine the difficulties from it failing to renew its domain name, RenoGov.com. Over the weekend it had to quickly switch its web site and all of its email addresses to RenoGov.org. RenoGov.com was registered at Register.com and the ... read more ...

It’s official: GoDaddy cans reward auctions - GoDaddy confirms it is no longer offering premium auctions on its TDNAM service. On Monday I wrote about how TDNAM appeared to no longer offer premium auctions. I wasn’t able to get a clear answer from GoDaddy support, but today I received a response to my message to the GoDaddy Office of the President: Dear Andrew, Thank you for the email. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Please accept our apology for any confusion there has been regarding this ... read more ...

Where are TDNAM’s Premium Auctions? - GoDaddy’s TDNAM premium auctions have disappeared. And so has GoDaddy’s support. On August 11 I wrote about how GoDaddy was offering “premium auctions” on its TDNAM domain aftermarket. All of the domains in the premium category had traffic and most had starting bids around $10. In order to bid on premium domains you had to pay the $19.99 monthly fee to join at the premium level of GoDaddy’s domain parking service. I paid the $19.99 so I could test drive ... read more ...

eNom raises Club Drop prices - eNom has raised its minimum bid for Club Drop expiring domain auctions. Effective immediately, eNom’s Club Drop starting bid will be $60. Club Drop has steadily raised its minimum bid from $10 to its current price. I used Club Drop a lot when it was affordable, but now there appears to be little reason to go to Club Drop rather than its competitors. So the basic idea is to focus on catching fewer, but more valuable, domain names. This might leave an opening ... read more ...

TDNAM launches reward auctions - GoDaddy’s TDNAM domain aftermarket is now offering exclusive auctions to its parking service customers. When GoDaddy launched it’s domain parking service “CashParking” two months ago they threw a wrench in the traditional parking scheme — you have to pay GoDaddy to participate. It seems a bit odd to pay someone money for them to pay you money, but I guess GoDaddy is trying to play to the lowest common denominator. That said, GoDaddy allows you to pay a ... read more ...

What’s that domain name worth? - Forget domain appraisals. You can get domain name sales comps online. Trying to settle on a price for the value of a domain you are buying or selling? You can do a multiple based on traffic, but that’s not always the best approach. You can search through the archives at DNJournal to find comparable sales, but that’s not easy. You can get an appraisal, but few people place stock in appraisals. Enter DNSalePrice.com, a search engine for comparable domain name ... read more ...

pcNames.com Review - pcNames makes it easy to find available, expired, and pre-release domain names. I use a number of web sites to find quality domains names. For example, if I need a domain name related to phones, I might search at SnapCheck or DomainTools.com to find available or expiring domains that include “phone”. Both of these are good services I highly recommend. But there’s a fairly new player in town that deserves a pat on the back. pcNames makes it very easy to find ... read more ...

ValuableNames.com Review - The ValuableNames.com domain service is expensive but worth the price. Yesterday I reviewed NameSpy, an expiring domain service that I don’t think is worth the $39.95 monthly fee. So you might be surprised that today I’m going to recommend a domain service that costs a whopping $699 a month! ValuableNames helps you find great domain names that are currently registered but underused. The current owners of these domains might not understand the full value of the ... read more ...

Review of NameSpy - Active domainers are familiar with dozens of expired domain tools. In this entry I review NameSpy. We all know that expired domains are an important part of any domain portfolio. Most domainers are familiar with services you can use to find good expiring domains. Many of these are paid subscription services, including a newcomer called NameSpy. NameSpy ... read more ...

TDNAM high trade domains shutting today - Here’s a list of select high traffic domains expiring at GoDaddy’s TDNAM today. TDNAM contrast extended auctions - GoDaddy’s TDNAM service is testing auto-extensions of domain name auctions. This is one of the features I requested in my post on November 3 (see GoDaddy’s Domain Name Aftermarket adds features). Certain domain auctions will automatically extend for 5 minutes when a bid is placed in the final 5 minutes. You can identify these auctions by the clock icon next to the name. This helps users avoid being outbid by someone who has a faster mouse or an automated bidding ... read more ...
