While maintaining the status quo on singular and plural versions of the same string, its resolution on ‘closed generic’ gTLDs places such applications in a holding pattern.
In April, the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) issued a 12-page communiqué which outlined safeguard advice to apply to broad categories of gTLD applications. Earlier ... read more ...

Domain Search Tool Helps gTLD Applicants -
I’ve written about how the Domain Search Tool helps me find potential buyers for my domain names by showing me lists of registered domain names that have a specific keyword string in them. I think gTLD registrants can use the tool to help project sales figures and potentially use it for outbound sales.
I can assume that gTLD registries will want to target domain name / website owners who use the gTLD keyword at the end of their domain name. For instance, the .Inc registry will probably ... read more ...
How will the introduction of new gTLDs change the internet? -
With new gTLDs due to start appearing on the web, it’s time again for brand owners to stop and think about their domain strategy.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the body responsible for managing and coordinating the Internet’s Domain Name System, last week made a surprise announcement that the first new gTLD could go live in the internet as early as August 28 2013 and we may see the first registrations from September 28.
The new generic top-level domain program ... read more ...
Would you use a new .Wales or .Cymru website extension or email address? -
We're all used to websites with .co.uk and .com at the end of the title, the .com TLD (Top Level Domain) extension is as old as the idea of a domain extension itself, but we will soon see the introduction of .Wales and .Cymru TLDs.
So you could soon be logging onto www.google.cymru, and searching for websites in Wales (and beyond). It could see a big change in the way things work online, Wales is not seen as being any different to the rest of the UK by many internet services.
In fact, in 2009, ... read more ...

ICANN puts Whois on end-of-life list -
7 shortcuts to losing your data (and probably your job!)
ICANN is proposing a goodbye to Whois, saying that data is often inaccurate and suggesting that some search fields should be restricted to “authenticated requestors”.
Its discussion paper, here, says Whois is “broken”.
The paper seems to suggest that one of the things that's “broken” the Whois system is the proliferation of new gTLDs, which is making the “Internet ecosystem … more complex”. The report notes that ... read more ...
Customised domain names get greenlight -
Previously, the endings of top-level domain names were limited to a limited group of generic top level domains such as .com, .net, .org, as well as individual country code domain names such as .ca for Canada or .uk for the United Kingdom.
New names won't start appearing until at least next year, and ICANN won't be deciding on specific ones quite yet. The organization still must work out many details, including fees for obtaining new names, expected to exceed $100,000 apiece to help ICANN ... read more ...

Revisiting generic top-level domains -
As expected, there has been great initial interest in generating the new generic top-level domains, or gTLDs, that are poised to add variety to the conventional .com, .org, and .net domains that have dominated the Internet for decades. ICANN, the agency architecting the domain system, reports that as of June 7, 2013, it had approved 638 of the new gTLDs. Yet, at the same time, some companies are choosing to abandon their gTLD applications rather than pioneer this new area. While some might cite ... read more ...
Internet Infrastructure: Stability at the Core, Innovation at the Edge (Part 2 of 5) -
For nearly all communications on today's Internet, domain names play a crucial role in providing stable navigation anchors for accessing information in a predictable and safe manner, irrespective of where you're located or the type of device or network connection you're using. Over the past 15 years hundreds of millions of domain names have been added to the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), and well over two billion (that's Billion!) new users, some ~34 percent of the global population, ... read more ...
The ICANN’s and CANT’s of new gTLDs -
A domain name offers a business an address in the global marketplace known as the internet. It is not surprising that the limited options available in existing top level domains (TLDs), has grown increasingly problematic. For example, should a leading intellectual property firm wish to register its name, ADAMS ADAMS, as a domain name in the .com top level domain, the fact that auctioneers trading in Iowa Falls, Unites States of America had already legitimately registered the domain name adamsandadams.com, ... read more ...
