Balancing Opportunity And Risk With The New TLDs - A Beginner’s Guide to the Internet’s New World, Slightly Right of the DotIn 2013, we are witnessing a resetting of the Internet clock, making it possible to purchase a tract of virtual real estate to the right of the dot, as in .chevy, .samsung or .dell. We saw early signs of it this past February, in some of the Superbowl advertising. Remember how Booking.com ended its spot with a saucily intoned, “Booking dot yeah”? New generic top-level domains are coming — consider protecting your mark … - In early July 2013, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) passed one of the last checkpoints on the path to introducing new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) by promulgating a registry agreement that will be entered into by successful gTLD applicants prior to delegation of the new domain space. This means that ICANN could delegate the first of the approved gTLDs (of which there are over 1000!) very soon, consistent with its earlier estimation that the first of the ... read more ...

Riding the new gTLD-go-round: revisiting the past?– embracing the future - Closing in on nearly three decades of trademark practice, I am struck by just how far technology has advanced the practice since that bemusing day years ago when a potential client expressed surprise that I was able to file applications with the United States Patent Trademark Office (USPTO) from the West Coast. Today, we can file applications in the US and abroad in just a few clicks—including in 80 or so jurisdictions via the Madrid Protocol. Standing on the cusp of another major technological ... read more ...

What New gTLD’s Can Learn From Namejet .PW Auctions & Godaddy’s .LA … - Over this past week both Namejet.com and Godaddy.com ran auctions of re-branded ccTLD's and I think the results are a preview of what's to come for new gTLD's that attempt the same strategy. Four New Generic Top Level Domains - At its meeting in Durban, ICANN signed contracts with the applicants for four new top level domains. The new domains are شبكة, which means "web" in Arabic, онлайн and сайт, which mean "online" and "site" in Russian, and 游戏, which means "game" in Chinese. They should give us an interesting hint about the future of the new TLDs, because all four are utterly, totally, generic. If you read the applications, you will find that after you skip over the blather about innovation and ... read more ...
