You might have seen some articles recently about developments in the general top-level domain (gTLD) space (we previously posted about ICANN’s new gTLD program here and here). Last week, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Panel handed down its decision in response to a Legal Rights Objection, which will allow Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra) to operate the gTLD .yellowpages. We acted for Telstra.

What Types of New TLDs Are Being Released? -
(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) - With the introduction of new Top Level Domains (TLDs) later this year, the internet will have many new domain possibilities, which can be divided into four larger groups. Next to generic TLDs, there will be geographic TLDs, domains for different communities, and domains that can be used for special brands and organizations. With new TLDs, you can find new domains for your project or company that can easily be recognized.

What Happens Beyond Dot Com? Litigation! -
Web addresses are undergoing major changes this year. Familiar domain suffixes like .com, .net, .edu, and .org will soon be accompanied by new ones like .pizza, or .google, or .portland. Why? Because the organization that is more-or-less responsible for running the Web, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN ), is claiming that the current market is overcrowded with domain names.
ICANN says this prevents smaller companies with weaker Internet presences from obtaining ... read more ...

Amazon’s Domain Name Troubles Threaten ICANN Program -
A recommendation made last month by a committee from ICANN, the nonprofit organization that coordinates Internet domains, to reject Amazon.com Inc.’s application for the domain “.amazon” may end up undermining the largest-ever expansion of domains suffixes, which are also known as generic top-level domains (gTLDs). The Government Affairs Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recommended at a July meeting in Durban, South Africa, that ICANN’s ... read more ...
gTLD Security Study Released – Delays Up Ahead - The results of a new study on the security risks of proposed generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names likely will lead to delays of many new gTLD applications by at least four months. The majority of new gTLDs are “low risk” and got the green light to proceed, although these “low risk” applicants must still wait 120 days after signing their contracts before they can activate any domain names in their gTLDs. Higher risk applications could be delayed longer. It is common practice among enterprises ... read more ...
gTLD: Four Little Letters that Will Change the Web - In March, Sedo released a survey that asked SMBs about the new internet extensions, or generic top level domains (gTLDs), coming to the public in late 2013. We wanted to know what they knew about the new internet addresses, and if they were likely to pay attention. Results showed that SMBs generally didn’t know about the new domains, or really even care. On the other hand, SMBs were open to the opportunities and said they’d consider buying a new gTLD if they better understood why they would ... read more ...

Verisign: We Will Delegate New gTLD’s To The Root If The NTIA Tells Us To -
Some bloggers here and here, have raised the alarm that Verisign may not Delegate new gTLD’s based on a letter Verisign send to the U.S. National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) back in March.
I reached out to Verisign to get an updated comment and position of Verisign on the issue and asked if Verisign would delegate 20 new gTLD strings per week as is ICANN’s current plan starting sometime late this year and certainly for 2014 under the new gTLD program.

Retailers Fail To Derail ICANN’s ‘Express’ Train To More Top-Level Domains - There's no denying it: The Internet domain name system poses
serious challenges for trademark owners. Domain name cybersquatting
was the
original trademark Internet twist. And the current explosive
expansion in top-level domains will create new trademark conflicts,
and possibly new twists in Internet trademark law, as two very
recent cases involving the retailers Express and The Limited
illustrate.
Before diving into these recent decisions, let's quickly
review top-level domains. They are the highest ... read more ...

.horse is here and the internet will never be the same -
Soon the internet will be awash with nearly 2,000 new top-level domains (TLDs), those short suffixes at the end of a web address — like the ubiquitous .com — that indicate the kind of site it's pointing to. The influx is the result of the new land grab for a corner of the web's millions of URLs, whether that's sites that end with .book, .catholic, or .horse. But it wasn't so long ago there were fewer than 10 TLDs, says Craig Partridge, one of the young scientists who helped decide how ... read more ...
Publication of the Dotless Domain Name Study – ag-IP - MARINA DEL REY, CA - ICANN announced the publication of the Dotless Domain Name Security and Stability Study Report (http://www.icann.org/en/groups/ssac/documents/sac-053-en.pdf) [PDF, 1.02 MB] by IT Security firm, Carve Systems LLC (Carve Systems).
According to ICANN, the Dotless domain names are those that consist of a single label (e.g., http://example, or mail@example). Dotless names would require the inclusion of, for example, an A, AAAA, or MX, record in the apex of a TLD zone in the DNS (i.e., ... read more ...

According to ICANN, the study also reviewed the possibility of collisions arising from the use of X.509 digital certificates.

New gTLD SSR-2: Exploratory Consumer Impact Analysis (Part 5 of 5) -
Throughout this series of blog posts we've discussed a number of issues related to security, stability, and resilience of the DNS ecosystem, particularly as we approach the rollout of new gTLDs. Additionally, we highlighted a number of issues that we believe are outstanding and need to be resolved before the safe introduction of new gTLDs can occur — and we tried to provide some context as to why, all the while continuously highlighting that nearly all of these unresolved recommendations came ... read more ...
The Long Gestation and Afterlife of New gTLDs -
ICANN continues to flail, pointlessly. The latest in a series of missteps that could easily have been avoided is its recommendations on what to do about a report on the potential for confusion and misaddressing when someone's internal network names match the name for a new gTLD, and they have misconfigured their routers and/or DNS to the extent that someone typing in a new gTLD name might end up in the middle of someone else's network.
You'd think that if someone misconfigured their machinery ... read more ...
