Afternic vs. Sedo for adding domains in bulk - I recently decided to add a list of about 300 domains to both Afternic and Sedo, the two leading domain sales sites. I’ve sold domains through both of the systems, and find that just listing domains there can spur interest. The usual process for adding domains to each service involves entering details one by one…by one…by one. If you’re entering 300 domains, it’s going to take you a couple days. Fortunately, each site offers a service that lets you add ... read more ...

Denial-of-Service Attacks strike PPC Services - Have you noticed that your PPC parked domains haven’t been performing as well as usual? Several services have recently been hit by denial-of-service (DOS) attacks. Such attacks occur when many computers are enlisted to send an overwhelming amount of traffic to a server in order to disable it. Sedo was hit over the weekend, and they are compensating people for the lost traffic. According to a statement from Sedo “the attack began on Saturday afternoon (8/20) ... read more ...

ParkingSite.com gets off to a quick start - ParkingSite.com, launched by DNForum owner Adam Dicker, is off to a fast start. (See DNForum launches paid parking service.) Yesterday ParkingSite added new templates, automatic selection of DNS parking or forwarding, a payment withdrawal system, and “for sale” signs on parked sites. Stats on keyword-based domains have been excellent; my domain StlNews.com is pulling in about 4-5x what it brought with Sedo Parking. I recently moved some domains that were parked ... read more ...

DNForum launches paid parking service - After a long wait (see DNForum’s paid parking service ready to leave beta?), DNForum has launched its paid parking service at ParkingSite.com. Its features blow away most other parking services, and it has the potential to become #1 in short order. Among the things I like about the service: -95% payout. ParkingSite only rakes 5% off the top! -Templates. And I mean tons of templates so that your domain will actually look like it has a real site, not some generic ... read more ...

Web hosting for domain name owners - Domain name investors have a number of choices about how to host their many domain names. The easiest option is to park the domain at various services at no cost–in fact, the parking services pay you (see ParkQuick). But what about when you want to create a web site for the domain in hopes of boosting revenue or the domain’s value? Although there are thousands of web hosts out there, some aren’t “compatible” with domain name owners. Most of us are looking ... read more ...

GoldKey Emerges from a Pack - July saw several changes in the domain pay-per-click (PPC) market. Early in the month TrafficZ announced their new TrafficZ 4.0 service. The site has a new look, and you no longer have to choose between pay-per-click and pay-per-impression. GoldKey has emerged from the pack recently as the top paying service for type-in domains and true keyword domains. July also saw the introduction of new themed graphic templates for GoldKey sites. It is easy to change the ... read more ...

No resellers for .eu domains - According to this article, EurID has confirmed that resellers will not be allowed to sell .eu domain names. EurID is the registry for all .eu domains, which should be available for registration in 2006. Resellers have been blamed for a number of domain hijackings. I think it’s hard enough to maintain quality standards for the hundreds of true ICANN accredited domain registrars. I love the competition and the low prices it brings, but I’m tired of registrars ... read more ...

sTypo product review - There are a number of tools on the market for finding “typo” domains. I personally am not a fan of such domains, especially when it comes to buying typos of trademarks. But there are legitimate circumstances for buying typo domains, such as typos of domains you already own or typos of common words (e.g., city names). One of the more powerful tools to enter the market is sTypo. Finding misspellings with sTypo is fairly easy. You just enter the domain and click ... read more ...

Communicate.com “frees” the domain - I’m a believer in Communicate.com’s business model. (OTC: CMNN.ob). The company owns premium domains, like karate.com and makeup.com, and creates businesses around these. Other domains in the company’s portfolio are parked with advertisements. One thing has always bothered me, though. Communicate.com used its domain as a corporate information page. Because of this, communicate.com could never generate revenue from the domain or consider selling it! Communicate.com ... read more ...

DNForum’s paid parking use prepared to leave beta? - DNForum’s new paid parking service, ParkingSite.com, should be out of beta testing my mid-July. This is according to Adam Dicker, who owns DNForum. I have high hopes for this service, given that Adam typically knocks projects out of the park. I’m a bit concerned, though, since it was originally scheduled to go live a couple months ago! On message posts at DNForum, a number of beta users are still complaining about problems. When ParkingSite.com goes live, ... read more ...

TrafficClub domain parking use continues to impress - I’ve written about TrafficClub, the paid parking service from Moniker, in the past. Here’s an update on how it’s performing for me. As of June 21, I’m running an excellent RPM (revenue per thousand views) of $44.50. This is up sharply from $10-$20 in previous months. A lot of this has to do with TrafficClub’s optimization process. Of my domains that have had 50 or more page views, the lowest is $2.33 RPM, and the best is $209.45! If you take these two ... read more ...

Sedo domain name parking now in 20 languages - Sedo has announced that its domain name parking services are now available in 20 languages. What’s neat about this system is that it automatically changes the language of the site content and links based on the country of the visitor, so you don’t have to geo target the domain based on its content. Sedo has also improved its subdomain linking, so now hits to a subdomain such as news.domain.com will point back to domain.com. The foreign language optimization ... read more ...

Anatomy of a domain name estimation scam - [Update March 23, 2009: a similar scam has surfaced.] One of the oldest and most popular scams against domain name owners is the domain appraisal scam. It works like this: someone emails you interested in buying a domain. When you reply, they require an appraisal to verify the value. The scammer either owns the domain appraisal company you are referred to, or is a paid affiliate. I recently received an offer to buy a domain, and knew it was a scam from the beginning. ... read more ...

No word nonetheless on Yahoo “Adsense” launch - I received an e-mail from Yahoo yesterday, sent to their “Publisher Notification” checklist. I was excited and hoped it would be a message inviting me to join the new Overture ad syndication program. Unfortunately, it just said that that program is still not ready and invited me to check out Yahoo’s latest search features. The more I think about it, I wonder if Overture (ok, I need to start calling it Yahoo) will be able to compete on keyword bids with Google. ... read more ...

Review of Unmined.com - As a domain name investor, I’m always excited to see new products and services to help me find the best domain names. You can register domains for under $10–far less than the cost of expiring domains–so finding good unregistered domains can be profitable. Update on TrafficClub domain parking program - A few weeks ago I wrote about TrafficClub, a new paid domain name parking program from Moniker. I’ve been happy with the revenue so far, and now have month end stats for April: -RPM (revenue per 1,000 page views) was $18.43 -RPM for domains generating at least 75 views ranged from $4.66 to $104.24 Overall I’ve very satisfied. How to select a right domain name for your company - As the editor of DomainNameWire.com, I’m frequently e-mailed by people asking for domain name advice. Specifically, what should they look for when registering a domain name for their company? This may be basic for some of you, but I hope some of my readers gain value from this. Let me start with the things to avoid when registering a domain name that will be used for your main company web site. 1. Never use a hyphen. If your domain is some-name.com, many people ... read more ...

Google Adsense – HUGE changes! - After doing more research, it is clear that Google’s “animated banner ad” announcement today is a HUGE deal. It’s not the animated banners that matter. It’s that now you can target ANY TYPE OF AD by site rather than by keyword. Site-targetted ads will be sold on a cost per thousand basis only. How this will impact Adsense earnings is unclear. But if people start targetting ads by site rather than keyword, smaller publishers could take a huge hit. ... read more ...
