Biggest crowd ever packs house for DOMAINfest 2011.
DOMAINfest just kicked off today in Santa Monica and new registrations are still coming in. Yet the crowd has already surpassed last year’s record and is quickly approaching 700 people.
And while the rest of the country braces for a severe cold spell it’s a beautiful 62 degrees in Santa Monica.

Stars Aligning for .Nxt Conference -
New gTLD conference timing might end up being perfect after all.
Just days after .Nxt Conference organizer Kieren McCarthy lamented that some supporters were asking him to postpone his new gTLD conference, it looks like the timing is better than ever.
Yesterday ICANN released documents showing that it is formally invoking the GAC-Board consultation process and intends to approve the final applicant guidebook for new TLDs in March.
That makes .Nxt’s February timing ... read more ...

Use a VeriSign Trust Seal to Get More Search Traffic and Conversions -
Hidden value of Trust Seal is in higher search click-throughs.
When eNom announced last summer that it would start selling VeriSign’s Trust Seal I kind of chuckled to myself.
Why would anyone pay $299 a year to display a VeriSign seal on their site? After all, you can get a full-blown SSL certificate from some providers for only $20 a year.
But the benefits are more than meets the eye.
Perhaps the biggest is increased search engine clicks. Many people who use ... read more ...

The conference has a record 37 sponsors (including BigJumbo, which I’ll be representing in addition to covering the event for Domain Name Wire).

VeriSign Loses Money (Sort Of) as .Com and .Net Top 105 Million -
Excluding a one time charge VeriSign reports nice earnings for Q4.
VeriSign reported a loss for the fourth quarter of 2010 in earnings just released.
So how can the company that prints money with the .com and .net registry lose money?
It was a one time charge related to contingent interest on a special dividend that swung the company to a loss. Ignore this one time event and VeriSign had a great quarter thanks to rising domain registrations. The company earned and ... read more ...

Domain Conference Heads for a Rockies -
Conference brings together domain names and snow.
Mike Law, who writes the NameTalent.com blog, is organizing the first ever Rocky Mountain Domain Conference (RMDC) February 26 in Denver, Colorado.
I’m a big fan of smaller, regional domain name conferences and meetups. They attract a lot of locals that don’t make it to large domain conferences and also bring in some larger domainers and companies from around the country.
RMDC will be a one day event on February ... read more ...

Domain Roundtable Bahamas Q & A -
What you need to know about this year’s Domain Roundtable Conference.
After taking a year off in 2010, Domain Roundtable is back this March. And it’s back in style, traveling to The Atlantis in the Bahamas. I checked in with the Domain Roundtable (DRT) to get the scoop.
DNW: Your last Domain Roundtable was in Washington, DC in 2009. Why did Domain Roundtable take a year off in 2010?
DRT: We don’t feel compelled to have a show every year; we prefer to host a ... read more ...

DomainTools Turns on “Recent Whois” For Go Daddy Domain Names -
Site begins showing older whois records.
DomainTools has come up with a (perhaps interim) solution after Go Daddy started blocking some whois services from accessing its full records.
Searches at DomainTools for domain names registered at Go Daddy now include a “recent whois record” with the note “We provide this record when data provided by the registrar is missing key information.”
Here’s an example:
It’s not clear how recent the whois records are and ... read more ...

Two Smart Financial Moves for DOMAINfest Conference -
Conference cost increases next week.
The domain business’ biggest conference of 2011 is a month away. But you can make two smart financial moves by buying your DOMAINfest conference pass by the end of this week:
1. The price goes up $100 on January 1, so you can save $100 by getting your pass this week.
2. By purchasing in 2010 you can record your expense on this year’s taxes, thus lowering your current tax liability. (You can also do well by purchasing your ... read more ...

Domain sales database switches hands.
Domain investor Adam Strong has purchased the NameBio.com web site, a searchable repository of domain name sales.
NameBio was the second notable site of its kind after DNSalePrice.com. Both sites aggregate information about various public domain name sales and present them in an easy-to-filter database.
The original owner of NameBio made some great search interface upgrades back in 2008 to the site. He then sold the site earlier ... read more ...

Fantasy domaining contest runs through January 15.
Oversee.net’s DOMAINfest conference has an innovative contest going on right now: fantasy domaining.
It works similar to fantasy football. But instead of drafting players and watching their Sunday afternoon performance, you draft domain names and watch their pay-per-click performance.
Here’s how it works:
1. Select 35 domain names out of 1,000 owned by Oversee.net
2. Pick 25 of these to be your “in game” ... read more ...

Art World Gets Title Insurance, Are Domain Names Next? -
You can insure the title of art, but domain names lag behind.
I’ve written numerous times about the potential of domain name title insurance. I’ve argued it’s not a profitable product to offer. Although I still feel that way, I was surprised to see an article in the latest Economist about title insurance for art.
The article discusses Blanchisseuses souffrant des dents by Edgar Degas, which Sotheby’s listed for sale in an auction. Someone viewing the ... read more ...
Domaining.com To Launch New Domain Escrow Service -
New escrow service coming in December.
Cybertonic, the company behind Domaining.com, is readying a new domain name escrow service at eCOP.com. The service appears to be only for domain names sold for $5,000 or less and will charge a flat $25 fee.
eCOP will not take ownership of the domain name and will only be an intermediary to hold the money until the domain name is transferred. Focusing only on smaller domain name transactions is an interesting idea and I’ll ... read more ...

New Smartphone App Hopes to Replace Phone Numbers with Domain Names -
Product takes advantage of how domain names are easier to remember than phone numbers.
I got a pitch for an interesting product today called Siter.com. The idea is that instead of needing to know a phone number to call someone or business you just need to know their domain name.
For example, let’s say you need to call your bank to ask a question. Normally on your smartphone you’d need to go to the banks web page and search for their phone number. With Siter.com ... read more ...
