GoDaddy aftermarket – we finally got my domain - On May 6, I wrote about winning an expired domain auction on GoDaddy’s new TDNAM.com. On June 6, I wrote about receiving an e-mail from GoDaddy saying the domain was mine, although it turns out it wasn’t yet. Today, about 6 weeks after winning the auction, I’m proud to say I finally own the domain! I’m still confused as to why GoDaddy is auctioning names off so far in advance. Other services that have direct registration drops auction the domains when the ... read more ...

GoDaddy’s failing domains (my experience) - A month ago, I posted about bidding on and winning a domain in GoDaddy’s “The Domain Name Aftermarket”. Yesterday I finally received notice from GoDaddy that the name is mine. Or is it? I can’t find it anywhere in my GoDaddy account. I e-mailed support; we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, since bidding on the domain its backlinks and overall value has decreased. Perhaps that is GoDaddy’s goal. By selling domains before they are kicked out by ... read more ...

The entrance fallout during New.net - With .travel and .xxx domains on the horizon, trouble abounds thanks to New.net. You may have heard of Net.net, which already sells domains with extensions like .travel, .xxx, and .law. These aren’t “real” domain names, as they go through an alternative root server. In order to actually visit one of the domains, your ISP must participate in the New.net program or you must modify your browser. So what happens when .travel and .xxx become “real” domains ... read more ...

.xxx domain name prolongation prepared for lift-off - By as early as this fall, you might be able to register domain.xxx. Reports have surfaced tonight that ICANN is finalizing its work with the ICM registry to manage the domain extension. .xxx will surely be one of the most sought after new extensions. Registrations will cost between $60-$75, which is about 10 times what registrations prices are for .com, .net, etc. Nevertheless, expect rampant domain speculation. Contrary to what the religious right hopes, the ... read more ...

Will “tack-on” fees crush domain name registration prices? - I hate getting my cell phone bill each month. In addition to the price the phone company quoted me, they tack on regulatory charges, taxes, and other fees. It really adds up. I’m afraid that domain name registrations might be headed in the same direction. It started with GoDaddy, which decided to advertise its domains for $8.95, but then tack on the $.25 ICANN-imposed tax on most registrations. Most other registrars simply include this cost in their advertised ... read more ...

Register.com woes continue - Register.com, once a leading candidate to knock Network Solutions offs its perch, is again having financial problems. They missed filing their latest 10-Q with the SEC (again) and received a delisting notice from the Nasdaq (again). This begs the question…what happens when a big domain registrar goes belly up? GoDaddy theme of SPAM scam - It appears that GoDaddy is the subject of a recent virus SPAM campaign made out to look like renewal emails, according to the this notice on GoDaddy’s web site. Big companies typically become the subject of such attacks (e.g. eBay, Amazon). But I have to wonder if some of this is in retaliation to recent GoDaddy moves, such as auctioning off its expiring domains. Regardless, be careful. ... read more ...

Domain registration “come-ons” identical to credit label industry - You get offers in the mail or see them on TV every day. “Get 0% APR on a new Visa” “Pay just 1.9% interest on a new MasterCard” Then you read the fine print, and find out that the interest rate is an introductory rate, only to shoot up to 20% after 6 months. Lately, I feel like the domain name industry is using the same tactics. It went mainstream with GoDaddy’s $3.99 domain name offer. It sounds good on the surface, until you read that you must purchase ... read more ...

Testing GoDaddy’s new lapsed domain auctions - I placed some bids on GoDaddy’s new TDNAM, which right now consists mostly of expiring domains once registered at GoDaddy. I just “won” one domain today. When placing a bid on an expiring domain you are presented with a disclaimer that says the domain can be renewed by the previous registrant. It’s somewhat unclear when you take ownership of the domain. Here’s the email I got from GoDaddy: Dear Andrew, Congratulations! You have placed the winning bid ... read more ...

GoDaddy places 60 day reason on failing domains - GoDaddy is now auctioning off its own expiring domains (see this posting). However, it appears they are placing a 60 day hold on all expired domains won at auction before the winner gets control. This certainly reduces its value!! Since GoDaddy has more active .com domains than any other registrar, GoDaddy’s new expired domain system will send major ripples through the expiring domain market. With Network Solution and Bulk Register’s expired domains going to ... read more ...

GoDaddy cans promotion firm - GoDaddy has fired The Ad Store, which created the company’s famous Super Bowl ad. GoDaddy will now handle advertising in house and focus less on general branding. GoDaddy’s ad agency is bounced ... read more ...

Do $5.99 domain names unequivocally come with no catch? - The price of registering domain names continues to fall. Recently, GoDaddy started offering $3.99 registrations with a catch. In order to qualify for the price, you had to buy a “non-domain” product with the domain (e.g. web hosting). That makes it not such a great deal, unless you intended to purchase another product anyway. I usually register with GoDaddy for $9.20 per year, eNom for about $10/year, or Dotster for $8.95 per year (I have special pricing with ... read more ...

GoDaddy topples Network Solutions - GoDaddy has officially knocked Network Solutions off its perch! GoDaddy now has more .COM, NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, and .US domain names under management than any other registrar. This is quite a feat given that GoDaddy sold its first domain name in 2000, just 5 years ago. In a nutshell, here’s what GoDaddy has going for it: 1. Lower prices. With everyday registrations around $9, and special deals around $4, they beat Network Solutions appx $35/year fees…and ... read more ...

Avoiding domain name scams - Avoiding domain name scams isn’t always easy. Massive phishing attacks so far have attacked mostly financial institutions. But I suspect we’ll start to see phishing attacks on registrars such as Network Solutions and Register.com. TheSpiderTrap discusses a recent attempt to steal a domain or force a transfer. While past “renewal” schemes have been done through the postal mail, this one was through e-mail. Always, always, always make sure the URL you go ... read more ...
