.com registry prices could strike $9.00 - In a post on Monday (see Verisign to retain .com registry through 2012) I discussed the proposed settlement between ICANN and Verisign stemming from a lawsuit in 2003. Details are starting to circulate the web, especially about the terms of Verisign’s contract extension through 2012. It would allow Verisign the raise the fee it charges registrars for each .com registration, renewal, or transfer from $6 now to $9 by the end of the term. Increases in the registry ... read more ...

Domain name companies strike by Hurricane Wilma - Hurricane Wilma is having an effect on a number of domain name service providers. The Hurricane hit Florida just as the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East conference concluded and also hit a number of Florida companies. DNJournal delayed its weekly sales report as it cleaned up and dealt with delays from domain name sales companies that usually provide it with statistics by Tuesday. Moniker and its paid parking service, TrafficClub, also reported heavy damages and asked customers ... read more ...

Verisign to keep .com registry by 2012 - In a late-breaking announcement today, Verisign and ICANN agreed to settle a longstanding lawsuit that originated with Verisign’s introduction of the SiteFinder service in 2003. This service basically set up a parking page on all domains that weren’t registered. Revenue from clicks on these parking pages went to Verisign. The settlement requires Verisign to get approval before introducing services like SiteFinder. When asked if Verisign would try to reintroduce ... read more ...

GoDaddy should dump ICANN tax - Several months ago GoDaddy started adding a $.25 ICANN “tax” to most domain name registrations. It is time for GoDaddy to drop this nonsense and add the fee to its advertised price; and ICANN should require all registrars to advertise its prices inclusive of fees. Here’s the background. In its latest budget ICANN added a variable fee for all accredited registrars. This fee is $.25 per domain name registered. The idea was to raise money by charging registrars ... read more ...

So we wish to be a registrar? - A number of domain name investors ponder the question “should I apply to start my own registrar?”. There are obvious benefits, not the least of which is being able to return domains for a refund within 5 days if you decide you don’t want them. If you want to start your own registrar you need to have some cash. Here are the costs: -$2500 non-refundable application fee -$4,000 annual accreditation fee -$.25 per name fee on gTLD registrations, renewals, and ... read more ...

Network Solutions admits to past problems - Network Solutions, which used to have a monopoly on the domain name registration market, is coming out in full force to admit its past poor customer service and promise better service going forward. If you flip through the October issue of Wired Magazine, you’ll see an ad on pages 55-56 that is a QA with Network Solutions CEO Champ Mitchell. In it he says: “One of the worst problems was our poor customer service. Customers were on hold for long periods of time…many ... read more ...

GoDaddy launches new TV commercials - GoDaddy, which started an international buzz with its ads during the Super Bowl this year, has released a series of new commercials. The commercials include a handful of testimonials from GoDaddy users in addition to a couple more commercials featuring the GoDaddy Girl. Feedback on CEO Bob Parson’s blog has been mostly negative, and I agree. At least on the GoDaddy Girl commercials. GoDaddy is acting like it’s selling beer, and wants to use “shock value” ... read more ...

GoDaddy sale - The world’s biggest registrar, GoDaddy, announced a couple special offers worthy of noting. First, you can get .com domain names for only $1.99 with the purchase of any non-domain product. This is a good deal if you’re planning to buy another service, such as hosting or e-mail. But it’s not that great if you just want the domain. Second, GoDaddy is offering a sale on .us and .biz domains. They are $6.95 each for a limited time. GoDaddy’s $1-off coupon code ... read more ...

The GoDaddy Blog: Over a top? - GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons has always been outspoken. But I have to question the purpose of his “personal” blog, which is closely tied to the company. You can click to the blog from the very top of the GoDaddy home page, so it is certainly endorsed by GoDaddy. Granted, Bob Parsons owns most of the company. A lot of corporate CEOs have blogs. They usually blog about the industry, and this pays dividends. A CEO at a company here in Austin uses his blog to talk ... read more ...

Registrar provides giveaway .CN domain names - The largest domain name registrar in China is giving free .cn domains to its current customers who already own .com or .net versions of domain names. Spamhaus slams Yahoo for domains registered - Spamhaus has slammed Yahoo for allowing the registration and/or hosting of thousands of domain names that can be used in phishing attacks. These domains have words in them like “bank”, “ebay”, and “PayPal”. Obviously, not all of these are used for phishing attacks…some might be reviews or services related to eBay, PayPal, and various banks. I’d be curious to see the breakdown between “bank” and the other keywords, since there are plenty of legitimate ... read more ...

.Net pricing might be fixed - The new agreement between ICANN and Verisign to manage the .net registry holds a big surprise: although the initial wholesale price of domains is lowered from $6.00 to $4.25, the price cap is completely removed in January 2007 (see .net pricing timebomb?). Registrars were given the chance to react to this pricing scheme, and they had a fair number of complaints about the pricing. In a report recently released by ICANN, the registrars gave the following suggestions: a. ... read more ...

Dotster is expanding–literally! - Dotster, one of the registrars that sparked early price wars for domain names, is moving into new offices because of its growth. According to a press release, Dotster now manages about 3 million domain names. That’s about a third as much as leader GoDaddy. Dotster reports that it tripled its domain registration business in 2005, but does not provide figures on what the basis is. I know that Dotster has gotten aggressive with pricing, especially for people registering ... read more ...

Bob Parsons fights behind opposite NetSol - GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons is mad. So what’s new? But this time it’s about a competitor and its comments in an interview with CNET News. On his blog Hot Points, Parsons tries to discredit many of NetSol’s comments about the number of domains under control by each respective company. Parson’s assumptions are probably correct–not that any domain investor has paid a second of attention to NetSol over the past few years. Note to Bob: please, lose the earring! ... read more ...

No resellers for .eu domains - According to this article, EurID has confirmed that resellers will not be allowed to sell .eu domain names. EurID is the registry for all .eu domains, which should be available for registration in 2006. Resellers have been blamed for a number of domain hijackings. I think it’s hard enough to maintain quality standards for the hundreds of true ICANN accredited domain registrars. I love the competition and the low prices it brings, but I’m tired of registrars ... read more ...

Will Mark Cuban buy Register.com? - Register.com once challenged NetSol.com for dominance in the domain name registration business. But it failed to adapt to changing competition, and now it is a laggard that until recently was out of compliance with SEC filing rules. It currently charges about $25 more per domain registration than its competitors. It is a profitable company, however, and is sitting on over $100M in cash. The Motley Fool reports that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has accumulated ... read more ...
