Latest Top Level Domain Guidebook Allows .Com Prices to Skyrocket -
New draft guidebook doesn’t adequately address concerns that VeriSign could hike .com registration prices.
Over the weekend, ICANN released its latest New gTLD Applicant Guidebook with guidelines for the introduction of new top level domain names such as .eco and .shop. Unfortunately, the guidebook still holds a time bomb for owners of existing domain names, such as .com domains, that could force them to pay massive renewal fees for their domains.
What the guidebook ... read more ...

The Real Truth About New Top Level Domains -
Here’s what is really happening with new TLDs.
I’ve written before about why I’m opposed to how ICANN is releasing new top level domain names, even though I stand to benefit financially from the release. But over the past couple months we’ve heard plenty of spin from everyone involved in the process. So I want to clear a few things up. I’m going to tell you what everyone is thinking, but may not want to come out and publicly say.
New TLDs will be introduced ... read more ...

DotGreen to Battle DotEco -
DotGreen to take on DotEco.
When I wrote my tongue-in-cheek guide on how to my .Eco a success, I joked:
Make sure the other side doesn’t decide to just get .green instead. You need to get their heads stuck on .eco. If they opt for .green, you could have long term competition. And that’s not what this is about; you need to get a monopoly TLD.
I should have done some fact checking, because, buried beneath all of the hoopla around .eco, a group has announced .green.
And, ... read more ...

How to Make .Eco a Success -
Here’s some free consulting for .eco top level domain supporters.
You may have recently read about a tiff between two groups competing to launch .eco, a domain name for companies to showcase their environmental friendliness. In one corner you’ve got Dot Eco, LLC, with support from Al Gore. In the other corner is Big Room. There’s also another company that has applied for a trademark to .eco, which could make things messier.
Both sides have been trading jabs. ... read more ...

Congress: Create Permanent Tie to ICANN -
It’s such positive, uplifting news to see justice and integrity restored. Andrew’s comment is also worded perfectly and is the essence of everything that ICANN seems to fail at …
“ICANN has seemed to steamroll dissenters”.
This is what I have observed over and over in my own assessment of ICANN as a policy making entity. That elitist “we are better than everyone” undercurrent.
I wonder what it will take for some real leadership to step up within that organization and forge ... read more ...

Companies File Trademarks for New Top Level Domain Names -
Filings unlikely to give a leg up in application process.
Companies are filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for service marks related to new TLDs. For example, Top Level Domain Holdings, Ltd (AIM: TLDH) has filed trademarks for .movie, .kids, .books, .buy, .baby, .poker, .golf, and .casino. (Top Level Domain Holdings is an investor in new TLD consulting firm Mind + Machines and dotNYC, LLC.)
Other examples include .eco, a trademark filed ... read more ...

Study Questions if Consumers Want New Top Level Domains -
Research report shows consumers not keen on new TLDs.
A couple weeks ago I received an email from a researcher at The Future Laboratory, a UK-based research and trend forecasting company. The company was preparing a report, sponsored by domain registrar Gandi.net, about the introduction of new top level domain names. We later discussed the issues surrounding new TLDs via phone.
I assumed that the report would be tainted by Gandi’s position on new top level domains, ... read more ...

Will Software Makers Really Support New TLDs? -
Unclear if software makers will support all new top level domain names.
One issue for top level domain name applicants is getting software makers, such as e-mail software companies, to approve their top level domains and make them work with their software.
The second draft guidebook for new TLD applicants provides a lengthy warning about this, stating that applicants “may find themselves expending considerable efforts working with providers to achieve acceptance ... read more ...
Governments Want Control of New Geo Domain Names -
Governmental Advisory Committee continues push for control of domains at top and second levels.
One of the more disturbing debates about the launch of new top level domain names is a land grab by Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC). Think of GAC as a United Nations scheme for domain names. They were given a voice at the table to prove that ICANN isn’t just a puppet of the U.S. government.
GAC wants to protect both top level domains and second level domain names ... read more ...

New Top Level Domain Demand Still Elusive -
Hard to prove demand for new top level domain names
One of the key questions facing ICANN and the internet community is if there is any demand for new top level domain names should they be released. So far no one has released convincing evidence of demand. And if past TLD launches are any indication, demand will be minimal.
One company, Quintaris, has taken a stab at proving demand by allowing people to ‘backorder’ new domains at Pool. These backorders are ... read more ...

New Top Level Domain Names Delayed -
Applications won’t be accepted until early 2010.
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has pushed back its estimated time frame to start accepting applications for new top level domains. ICANN had hoped to accept applications by December 2009, but now admits the process won’t start until first quarter of 2010.
ICANN hopes to address overarching concerns about new TLDs at its next meeting in Sydney and then publish the third draft of the ... read more ...
Man Claims Rights to .NYC, .Movies, and More -
New Yorker says he already uses 118 top level domains.
I thought I had heard it all about new TLDs until I read this article in The Villager. Now that a new process for top level domain names is underway, Paul Garrin and his company Name.Space claims that it already “owns” many top level domain names including .nyc, .food, .sex, .movies, and .hotel.
Garrin and his company wanted to launch over nearly 500 top level domain names before ICANN even existed. He then ... read more ...

Demand Media to ICANN: Hurry Up -
Company one of few to suggest IRT timeline is OK.
Demand Media has been transparent about its desire to launch new top level domain names and to move the process along quickly. So it doesn’t come as any surprise that it wants ICANN to push forward through recommendations from the Implementation Recommendation Team (IRT) in a swift fashion.
Most began started their comments to IRT by complaining about a short (about 1 week) comment period for IRT’s drastic ... read more ...

Verizon Voices Concerns about New Top Level Domain Names -
Verizon has several recommendations for ICANN — including listening to the recommendations it has already received.
I’ve read dozens of comments submitted to ICANN about its new top level domain name applicant guidebook. Perhaps the most thoughtful comments in the latest round were from Verizon (NYSE: VZ), which is known in the domain community for aggressively pursuing cybersquatters. You can read Verizon’s comments here (pdf).

Pool Taking Pre-Orders for Non-Existent Domain Names -
Pool teams up with Quintaris to offer pre-orders domains for new TLDs.
In a move that will surely add confusion to an already crazy process, domain backordering service Pool.com is accepting pre-orders for non-existent domain names such as .xxx and .web.
The service accepts pre-orders for second level domain names on about 50 top level domain names that it thinks will be pursued. Customers can also pre-order a domain for any top level domain they can think of.

What Does Vint Cerf Think About New Top Level Domains? -
Father of the Internet thinks there needs be a solid rationale for adding new TLDs.
Domain investor George Kirikos recently found an article by Tim Berners-Lee, a key inventor of the World Wide Web, explaining his opposition to adding new top level domain names. It got me thinking, “what do other important people in the internet world think about new TLDs?”
The answer for Vint Cerf was right under my nose on Domain Name Wire.

Resounding Opposition to New Top Level Domains -
Most constituents opposed to new TLDs; propose major overhaul.
The comment period for the second draft of ICANN’s new top level domain name applicant guidebook concluded yesterday. Most commentors suggested ways to fix the process and rules, but these same commentors are opposed to any adoption of new top level domains. Want to speak your mind? Today’s the day.
If you have an opinion (and you should) about the second draft of ICANN’s plans to inundate the web with more top level domain names, today is the deadline to submit comments.
As was the case last time, major corporations are waiting until the last day to submit comments. So far the trend seems to be that companies are saying “we submitted comments last time, you did nothing about them, so please refer to our previous ... read more ...

.Pol for Politicians? Easier Said Than Done. -
Op-ed suggests .pol to avert political cybersquatting. But the devil is in the details.
Matthew Sanderson, a political law attorney at Caplin Drysdale in Washington, published an op-ed in the Washington Post today suggesting a new .pol domain name. This domain name would be reserved for politicians as a way to avoid “political cybersquatting”, whereby people snap up domain names of politicians to grab internet traffic.
The proposal makes sense on the surface, ... read more ...

Threatdown: GAC Wants Second Level Place Names Protected -
Another reason you need to pay attention to the new top level domain process at ICANN.
I think it’s time to start a “Threatdown” for domain owners, a la Stephen Colbert. The threats to domain name owners in the new top level domain process at ICANN are far scarier than Colbert’s perennial threat: bears.
Today’s threat is the protection of city and other place names at the second level. We’re not talking about top level domains such as .nyc. We’re ... read more ...

PopSci Author Points Out a Obvious About New TLDs -
Tom Conlon understands what new TLDs are all about: nothing.
Popular Science author Tom Conlon published an article today about .eco specifically, but mostly about the challenges any new top level domain faces. The headline of his article is appropriately named “A New Type of Domain Name, A New Waste of Money”.
And for domain names not associated with a trademark, who really cares about anything except “.com”? Sure, a few sites like del.icio.us and last.fm ... read more ...

Yet Another Hurdle for New Top Level Domains -
Getting your TLD approved by ICANN doesn’t mean it will go online.
Section 1.2.3 of ICANN’s Applicant Guidebook for new TLDs points out a stark reality for new TLDs: they may not work. Worse, they may work in some places and systems and not others:
All applicants should be aware that approval acceptance of their applications by ICANN and entering into a registry agreement with ICANN does not guarantee that the new gTLD will immediately function throughout the ... read more ...

ICANN’s Registry Continuity Plan Has a Big Hole -
Guidelines for new registries doesn’t make sense; but therein lies a business opportunity.

documentary evidence of ability to fund ongoing basic registry operations for registrants ... read more ...
