.nxt – Like an ICANN Meeting With a Pulse -
by Kevin Murphy
The inaugural .nxt conference on new top-level domains wound up in San Francisco Thursday, with most participants seeming to agree that it was a success.
The two-day meeting attracted 196 sign-ups (about 20 of whom apparently paid but did not ultimately show up to collect their badges) and almost 20 sponsors, not a bad showing for a first-of-its-kind event.
The purpose of the conference was to provide a venue to discuss the business of new TLDs without ... read more ...

New Top Level Domain Timeline Takes Another Hit -
More delays likely to handle GAC issues.
ICANN has released details about its upcoming meeting with the Governmental Advisory Committee regarding new top level domain names. Although the meeting will take place ahead of the ICANN meeting in San Francisco this March, the February 28-March 1 get together does not appear to be the final meeting between the two on the matter.
As Kevin Murphy points out, ICANN’s release about the meeting states “This meeting is not ... read more ...

Popular .Music Initiative Files US Trademark Application -
.Music backer files application for U.S. trademark.
Constantinos Roussos has been aggressive in marketing his initiative for a .music top level domain name. He’s also voice displeasure that latecomers could derail his hopes by also applying for the .music top level domain.
At the June 2010 ICANN meeting Roussos voiced his displeasure about latecomers to new TLDs “gaming” the system and asked ICANN for an extra point on community application weightings for ... read more ...

ICANN Extends Public Comment Period for New TLD Guidebook -
More time to weigh in on new top level domain name plan.
ICANN frequently extends the deadline to submit public comments on both major and minor issues. But this is done prior to the comment period ending to give people more time to consider how they want to weigh in.
A number of people requested additional time to comment on the proposed Final Applicant Guidebook for new TLDs but were rebuffed and the comment period ended a week ago.
Now it has risen from the ... read more ...

Kevin Murphy discovered some recently disclosed ICANN staff documents that were used to estimate the previous application starting period of May 2011.
Based on the assumptions in the staff documents, ... read more ...

Registries want to remove all pricing controls on new top level domain names.
ICANN’s Registries Stakeholder Group (RySG) has submitted comments regarding the Proposed Final Applicant Guidebook for new top level domain names. One proposed change sticks out: requesting no notice requirements for price changes on top level domain names.

.nxt conference registration now available.

Process, Not Technical Limitations, will Throttle New Top Level Domains -
200-1,000 new top level domains could be added in first year.
ICANN has released two documents related to the number of new top level domain names that may be added to the web per year.
The first document is technical in nature, covering how many gTLDs can be added to the root in any year. I previously wrote that it was determined 1,000 new TLDs could be added to the root in a year without problems. But after reading this report it’s clear that 1,000 was used ... read more ...

Athens Plans .Athens Top Level Domain Name -
Municipality wants .athens, but may run into challenges with trademark application.
Add Athens to the list of municipalities that want to register their own top level domain names.
I haven’t seen anything on the web about the city’s plans, but it filed two trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “.Athens” and “dot .athens” back in February. I hadn’t seen these yet because the original applications didn’t list domain names ... read more ...

ICANN Says It Can Scale Up to 1,000 New Top Level Domains a Year -
Technical infrastructure can handle 1,000 new TLDs a year, but there will be other bottlenecks.
One of the interesting things to come from ICANN’s closed door board retreat over the weekend is this tidbit: ICANN thinks it can delegate up to 1,000 top level domain names a year without technical root scaling problems.
Staff has also developed a model and a rationale for the maximum rate of applications that can be processed over the next few years. Staff is directed ... read more ...

Should Domainers Invest In Their Own Top Level Domain? -
A new opportunity for domain investors is on the horizon.
Domain investing is about to enter whole new era with the launch of new top level domain names. Regardless of if they like the idea of new TLDs or not, a number of domainers are evaluating starting their own top level domain names. Consider it diversification or hedging their bets.

After 3,000 Emails, No Consensus on Registry-Registrar Separation -
Still no general consensus on registry-registrar separation for new TLDs.
With names such as RACK+, “Free Trade”, and CAM3, you can be excused for confusing proposals for registry-registrar separation on new TLDs with exotic subprime mortgage bonds or off-balance sheet Enron subsidiaries.
But these are names of three of the six proposals for integrating the traditionally separate roles of registrars (e.g. Go Daddy, eNom) and registries (e.g. VeriSign, Neustar) ... read more ...

Will ICANN Insiders Get Leg Up with New TLDs? -
I have read the Tim-Berners Lee and his opposition to .mobi and .xxx. I disagree entirely with the notion that .com is the only king and any other TLD are useless and could have no value to their appropriate constituencies and communities. So Tim-Berners should have a little talk with the 1.3+ million that have signed the .music initiative and tell them that they wanting their .music is not in the public interest or in their interest, even though they want it.
Also it depends on the ... read more ...

It is a well reasoned report that lays out the truth about the costs and benefits of new TLDs, and comes to a conclusion ... read more ...

The latest version of the draft applicant guidebook for new top level domain names prohibits country names (e.g. .mexico) from being registered.
