ICA: Trademark Holders Attempting To Greatly Expand Their Rights Through The New gTLD Process - Trademark interests, like CADNA,  are actively trying to use the new gTLD process, to obtain substantial changes in current trademark protection to greatly expand their existing rights. Of greatest concern is the fact that they are seeking: 1.   A global brand registry, that has the potential to expand trademark rights well beyond the bounds of current law, by giving special protection to trademark owners’ “virtual rights” beyond the relevant marketplace and geographic restrictions of Trademark ... read more ...

Scotland Looking For It’s Own Extension: Will New gTLD’s Hurt The Value Of Existing Country Code Domains - A government studey in Scotland, found almost 60% of organizations there, and more than 80% of those questioned worldwide, support the idea of Scotland having it own gTLD, when they are released late next year. Suggested addresses are .sco or .scot, which would create an alternative to the current .co.uk. First Minister Alex Salmond commented on the survey, saying: “I think in terms of the profile of Scotland internationally, in the modern world, probably your domain name is one of the key characteristics ... read more ...

Open Letter To ICANN: Our Take On a New Domain Extensions - As we wrote a few days ago, Monday is the last day for submitting your comments on the New domain extensions, the gTLD’s, which is an incredibly important issue for all domain holders. It effects all domain holders because the rules that are applied to the new gTLDs can be used to amend existing contracts for all existing extensions.  So even if you have no interest in acquiring any new gTLD domains, you still need to be interested in the contract under consideration. As we stated in our previous ... read more ...

Last Chance To Comment To ICANN On Proposed gTLD’s - The comment period for the proposed gTLD’s has been extended until next Monday December 15th. Yesterday in a post entitled “Why Domaining Sucks”, my friend Sahar posted as reason number 3 “We lack influence with ICANN”.  I think this is common complaint. However, as of today there are less than 100 comments posted on any of the six topics you can comment on regarding the new gTLD’s. Certainly, if you do not comment when ICANN asks for it, you have no say. When the last comment period ... read more ...

New Domain Extensions: Registries Should be Required To Give Trademark Holders Their Domains. - The domain industry got another black eye when Toyota.me became the highest priced .me domain sale, at over 90K. Trademark holders can apply for their domain during the sunrise period of a domain extension launch. Sunrise period application are always priced substantially higher than regular registration during the land rush.  For ... read more ...

If You Can Make This Kind Of Money, Why Not Sponsor a Registry? - Without a doubt the .me launch, from a purely economic point of view,  has been a huge success. I added all the winning bid prices from the closed auctions and add all the current high bids on the active auctions and came up to a total of around $2 million. $2 Million dollars for the registry, not including its profit on the 50,000 or so .me domains that were registered in the first days (the last report on the number of registrations I have seen). At $19.95 per year, retail, this extension obviously ... read more ...

MediaPost: How New TLD’s Can Effect SEO - An interesting post in MediaPost talks about how the new TLD’s may become a nightmare for trademark holders but also will be a boon for sites trying to get their SEO rank increased. “”””Search Engines and the Domainrush If and when it does happen, look for an immediate impact on search engine marketing. Search engines love keyword-enriched domain names, since finding exact keywords in domains proves to be an extremely strong indicator of a Web site’s relevance to a search query. By ... read more ...

A lot of e-mails.me - I just got though going the 2 step process for creating separate accounts for each of the .me domains I backordered, which look like they are going into auction mode. Although I backordered all the domains through my godaddy account in one shot, I got about 60 e-mails, one for each .me domain (not identified in the e-mail) asking me to set up an account to apparently allow me to bid in the auction of a .me domain, sometime in the future. Of course it would have been nice to have all these domain ... read more ...

Maybe Getting that New Domain Extension Won’t be That Easy - Looking at the draft flow chart that ICANN has posted for the process of obtaining new extensions, it looks like it may not be a quick and easy process as the press described. Certainly you can count next year out. An extension can be knocked out by if it is “too similar to reserved names or existing TLD’s and /or likely to cause instability.” If it passes that test it still can be knocked out if someone files an objection, on any one of 4 grounds: String Confusion Existing legal rights Morality ... read more ...

Fight Against New Extensions - This is a Guest Post by Seb ICANN is opening the door to a huge mess for companies of all size, SMBs to Fortune 500. Companies were used (should i say forced) to register their company name and brands in all new extensions ICANN would come up with : .eu / .mobi / .asia. These are nothing but defensive registrations, mostly not resolving or simply redirecting to the .com corporate site. On top of that, multinational companies faced an even bigger challenge registering, managing (or fighting for) ... read more ...
