Why The ICA Objected To The Contract To Run The .XXX Extension In 2007 & Still Does - Back In February 2007 the Internet Commerce Association (the”ICA”) wrote to ICANN objecting to the contract ICANN was considering entering into the ICM Registry to run the .xxx extension.
With the ICM Registry taking the position yesterday, that the Independent Panel’s decision mandates that ICANN enters into a contract with them to operate the .xxx registry and that they start offering .xxx domain sometime this year, I though it would be interesting to see what ICA objections to the extension ... read more ...

Will ICANN On Now Approve .XXX? ICM Says Yes; ICANN Seems To Say No - As we wrote about over the weekend the independent panel that reviewed ICANN’s handling of the application of ICM Registry to run the .xxx registry, ruled that since ICANN voted to approve the application it should have allowed it to move forward without the additional review it understook.
So the question now becomes whether ICANN will follow the report of the panel and approve the ICM Registry’s application for the .xxx extension in its next meeting.
The ICM Registry believes it will be allowed ... read more ...
How Tiered Pricing Could Lower a Cost of Domain Name Registration -
…for some domains, anyway.
A lot of the talk around new top level domain names is the lack of pricing controls on providers. A company that launches a new TLD can set prices however they wish, and owners of existing TLDs worry that this idea would then be applied to their domains. Have a successful domain? You could get hit with a $1,000 renewal bill.
But let’s look at the other side for a moment. My guess is VeriSign would like to offer variable pricing — ... read more ...

(ICM is stuck for its own attorney fees).
However the ruling by its nature is advisory only and has no biding ... read more ...

Minds + Machines: New gTLD’s Will Cause Only 316 New Cases Of CyberSquatting - A report released tonight by Minds+Machines, (pdf) predicts that the proposed gTLD’s will only cause 316 new cases of CyberSquatting and that the cost to trademark holders worldwide will be “less than $.10″.
How does the authors of the report come to that conclusion?
They look at the percentage of UDRP cases coming from .com’s, .net and .org against those in the “new” extensions, .info, .biz, .mobi, .asia and .tel.
The report does not account for the number of UDRP’s involving ccTLD’s ... read more ...

Last month ICANN opened up a comment period on its Draft Expressions of Interest/Pre-Registrations Model (EOI), which I’ve written about before.
I checked in today hoping to see some constructive comments on the EOI draft, such as costs and procedures. Instead, I was greeted with short, terse comments such as:

Expressions of Interest for New TLDs Still a Long Wait -
Idea to get data on new TLDs will probably take longer than expected.
If the current draft plan (pdf) for accepting “Expressions of Interest” for new top level domain names is adopted in similar form, ICANN won’t start accepting applications until June 2010 at the earliest.
The delay is because ICANN will shift its planned communications efforts for new TLD applications to promote Expressions of Interest instead. The current proposal for Expressions of Interest ... read more ...

VeriSign says it supports new top level domains, which shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Chuck Gomes, VP of Policy and Compliance, Naming and Directory Services at VeriSign, wrote a post at CircleID about his company’s support of new top level domain names. This really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in the industry for many reasons:
1. New top level domains won’t erode demand for .com, which VeriSign manages. .Com will remain king.
2. VeriSign will make ... read more ...

Law Firm Fear Mongering Over New TLDs -
An example of how a law firm is cashing in on new top level domains.
As I’ve said before, I understand why trademark holders are apprehensive about the introduction of new top level domain names. It’s indisputable that the release of hundreds of new top level domain names will be costly and time consuming from a brand protection perspective. But, as I noted, they are also overstating the problem.

Does The Internet Need A Non-Profit Extension? .NGO Is Proposed - There is a movement afoot to roll out a new gTLD that would be exclusively for charities and non-profit entities.
