Demand Media Demands Three-Strikes Rethink -
By Kevin Murphy
Demand Media has asked ICANN to reconsider an anti-cybersquatting provision in the new top-level domain Applicant Guidebook that may ban the company from running a TLD.
ICANN will do background checks on the companies applying for TLDs and their officers. If they are found to have lost three UDRP decisions in the last four years, their applications will be rejected.
Demand Media, which owns eNom, calls this “draconian”, saying that three UDRP losses ... read more ...

George Kirikos just published a comment to ICANN on the new Guidebook v5 on this issue and points out that Godaddy’s “Standard Tactics” has lost plenty of UDRP’s and therefore why shouldn’t Godaddy’s officers, directors and shareholders be barred from ever owning ... read more ...
ICANN New Guidebook: Terrorists Now Ok: Domainers 3 Strikes & You’re Out - In the new Guidebook issued by ICANN yesterday, (pdf) if you’re a domain holder that loses 3 or more UDRP (yes they are so fair and well grounded), you will be in the same class as Convicted Murderers, Rapists and child molesters.
Yes it would be a bad joke but its true.
Under the new ICANN guidebook (pages 1-17/1-19) if you lose 3 UDRP’s you’re disqualified from being a “major shareholder” of a new gTLD registry, or being a partner, officer, director, of a new gTLD registry.

Our Take On The ICANN Registry/Registrar Decision: The Big Guys Win/The Small Guys Lose - Yesterday ICANN shocked the domain world when it announced it would not prohibit registrars from owning registries and registries from owning registrars.
Up to yesterday all the guidebooks on the new gTLD’s and the general consensus was that ICANN would limit cross ownership of registrars and registries by to a certain minority position of somewhere between 2%-15%. (You can read about some the reaction in the domain world here).

WTR: 81% Of Global Brands Applying For New gTLD’s Will Make It, Rather Than The .Com Their Master Brand - According to a study conducted by World Trademark Review (WTR) magazine found that of those brands planning to apply to run a new generic top-level domain (gTLD), 81% plan on making their gTLD their master brand.
I think most in the domain industry believe that if global brands apply for their own gTLD they would still use their .com as their main internet presence.
However if this study is correct you might see Apple promote .Apple instead of Apple.com.
If hundreds of global brands go in this direction ... read more ...

Tomorrow is a Big Day for New Top Level Domain Names -
Big issue on the table at ICANN retreat.
In about 24 hours the ICANN Board of Directors will kick off a retreat. It’s not an official board meeting, but it’s anticipated that the two day retreat will finalize an important issue: registry/registrar separation.
A lot is at stake in this decision. Millions of dollars for the stakeholders.
Until now a registry hasn’t been able to own a registrar and (technically) vice-versa. Afilias is owned by a number of registrars, ... read more ...

As M+M states, ICANN estimate of 500 applications doesn’t take into account duplicate or conflicting applications.
