What do trademark owners need to know about the Trademark Clearinghouse … -
The Internet Committee for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a nonprofit organization that oversees the use of Internet domains, has recently implemented a new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) program for the purpose of increasing competition in the domain name space. Given that this program may also increase incidents of cybersquatting, or the temptation to misappropriate a legitimate trademark owner’s mark, ICANN has built into its new gTLD program several enhanced trademark rights mechanisms, ... read more ...

Donuts Agrees To Private Auctions For 63 New gTLD’s: Will Anyone Come To … -
Great post from Mike with insights beyond mere reporting and great comment from Domo.
Personally though, I expect quite a lot of the new gTLDs to be quite successful, if you agree half a million registrations is successful (compared to dot com’s more than 100 million). Successful for endusers.
What always seems to be missing from these discussions is the impact of the dot brands. Hundreds of the world’s greatest corporations are impatiently standing by ready ... read more ...
ICANN Still Having Problems with Top-Level Domain Website Suffixes -

ICANN announces .paris & .bzh among 6 French gTLDs coming this year -
Last week the ICANN announced a suite of new gTLDs (generic top-level domains) which will usher in a new era of domain extensions – I’m still holding out for .rude, but it looks like that will be awhile. The domain extensions that have passed ICANN’s rigorous examination include .PARIS, whose application was submitted by the City of Paris, as well as .BZH, which was submitted in 2004 by the www.bzh association.
The new gTLDs will likely change the way the web works, further fragmenting ... read more ...

Quick Poll: How Many Domain Names Will Exist By The End of 2016? -
I would estimate between 300 to 400 million. Although new registrations may maintain the current growth levels, there will be lot of drops as well and no takers on the drop, as the SEO and parking sectors crumble further.
Also, keep in view the machinations of certain big brothers to dismantle (or make irrelevant) the domain name system itself.
Just yesterday, I was talking to a decently-enough published writer and asked him for his domain name. He didn’t ... read more ...
Internet Governance and ICANN: Reflections from Beijing -
The original version of this post appeared on the Association for Progressive Communications’ website.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) self-described role is:
To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer — a name or a number. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination, we wouldn't have one global Internet. ... read more ...
