ICANN Kills Google’s Dotless Domain Dreams -
Back in April, Google sent a letter to ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, proposing a dotless domain system that would make use of the gTLDs, generic top-level domains, that Google had applied to manage. The proposal, if accepted, would allow computer users to type in words in their url in order to produce desired search results more quickly.
ICANN shot down the proposal, citing that security and stability issues that dotless domains would cause. They also raised ... read more ...

New gTLDs: If I Knew Then, What I Know Now… -
If only I had been able to predict the new gTLD future, but alas my crystal ball (well, really it's a Magic 8 Ball ®) did little to help me. And I really doubt that 5+ years ago, when this new gTLD journey began, that anyone could have predicted where we are now.
All that said, back in 2008, I wish I could have known that:

Protecting brands in new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) -
New generic top-level domains (gTLDs) will be introduced in the near future with the initial evaluation of applications anticipated to be completed by August 2013. For brand owners, there will be new ways to protect their trade marks from conflicting domain names within these new gTLDs. Failure to take appropriate measures may result in loss of brand protection in these new domains or the need for dispute resolution activities to regain control of the brand.

.XYZ One Of The 1st New gTLD’s To Launch Opens Up Pre-Registration -
The registry for the new gTLD .XYZ has just opened up preregistrations.
While preregistrations for new gTLD’s is nothing new the fact that this is being done at the registry level is different.
Many registrars and auction houses opened up preregistrations over the last couple of years but in this case it is the registry itself taking the preregistrations.
As always there is no cost to preregister a .XYZ domain name however the preregistration does not give you any rights to the domain.

New generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) such as .fun, .law, and .money have been in the works for a very long time, and the first batch may be just around the corner. ICANN recently published a “hypothetical” timeline that pins the first top-level domain delegation date (the date the gTLD becomes active) as September 5, 2013. Whether this date is ICANN’s wishful thinking or not, the new gTLDs are coming, and maybe as early as this fall. With the first delegations in sight, this is ... read more ...

Recording your brands in the Trademark Clearinghouse for the new gTLD … -
It is anticipated that the first new gTLDs may be delegated as early as September. While there has been slippage of the launch date in the past, it surely will happen soon.
The first new gTLDs to be delegated will be the 100 or so “internationalized” gTLDs (those in non-Latin scripts such as Chinese, Arabic, or Cyrillic). Once the process gets rolling, ICANN believes it can delegate as many as 20 new gTLDs per week. There are approximately 1,300 possible new gTLDs that may soon coexist with ... read more ...

However, Del Monte Corporation (DMC) challenged DMI's right to do so and asserted its right to the 'del monte' trade mark it owns for a range of fresh and canned food.

Die am Dienstag veröffentliche Untersuchung stufte die beiden TLDs als "hohe Risikofaktoren" ein. What Happens Beyond Dot Com? Litigation! -
Web addresses are undergoing major changes this year. Familiar domain suffixes like .com, .net, .edu, and .org will soon be accompanied by new ones like .pizza, or .google, or .portland. Why? Because the organization that is more-or-less responsible for running the Web, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN ), is claiming that the current market is overcrowded with domain names.
ICANN says this prevents smaller companies with weaker Internet presences from obtaining ... read more ...
Amazon’s Domain Name Troubles Threaten ICANN Program -
A recommendation made last month by a committee from ICANN, the nonprofit organization that coordinates Internet domains, to reject Amazon.com Inc.’s application for the domain “.amazon” may end up undermining the largest-ever expansion of domains suffixes, which are also known as generic top-level domains (gTLDs). gTLD Security Study Released – Delays Up Ahead - The results of a new study on the security risks of proposed generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names likely will lead to delays of many new gTLD applications by at least four months. Higher risk applications could be delayed longer. It is common practice among enterprises ... read more ...
