How Is Your Brand Handling the New gTLDs? - The following is a guest post by Mark Skoultchi, Principal, Catchword Branding The past two years have seen a dramatic expansion of domain-name alternatives. Before the rollout of hundreds of generic top-level domains (gTLDs) that began in 2014, new businesses looking to secure a web address typically faced the gold-standard (but often expensive or unavailable) choice of .com or a country code TLD (ccTLD) co-opted to have meaning beyond its country of origin—like .ly, .me, .io or .tv. These had previously been restricted to 22 versions and the number of gTLDs is set to rise from 22 to 617 by the end of 2015.Shortly after the meteoric rise of the internet in the early nineties, domain name squatting became a serious issue. Opportunistic individuals ... read more ...

Dot dot dot… Observations from the first two years of ICANN’s new gTLD programme - It's been about two years since the first of hundreds of new gTLDs began trickling out. New Sunrise Periods continue to open, and new registries are still being delegated by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Uptake has been patchy, especially for some of the more 'niche' extensions like .tattoo and .coupons. Many registries ... read more ...
