The internet can be a ridiculous place - The 2014 INTA Annual Meeting has come and gone, and now is a good time to think over all the meetings with colleagues and things learned over the past week. Several particularly interesting discussions have been about the new gTLDs. Though most have centred on protection strategies in this new environment, one tidbit that stuck out was a list of some of the most amusing domain names that have actually been registered under the new gTLDs. Some samples ... read more ...

New gTLDs Will Work Way Better Than Vanity Domains Did - There are updates in the domain name business that I have never been able to understand: one of them is called "vanity domain names". A vanity domain name is a domain that keeps on using the first and the second level domain, to form a keyword; the third level domain is sometimes used too. Good examples of these would be: webc.am or marmala.de, aud.it or del.icio.us. Trends that work ... Another trend that I do not understand is the use of specific country code top-Level Domains (two letter ... read more ...

Verizon counsel slams gTLD opportunists - “We have seen lots of cybersquatting but not a lot of innovation, which was one of the arguments for the new gTLDs programme”. So stated Sarah B Deutsch, vice president and associate general counsel for Verizon Communications, speaking at the INTA Annual Meeting earlier today, where she added: “We are seeing a steady flow of cybersquatters jumping in as new gTLDs roll out”. She therefore called on trademark counsel to record instances of abuse to inform later reviews of the gTLD programme. Drawing ... read more ...

Trademark Hysteria On New gTLD’s Unfounded? 725K Domains/ 53 URS/17 … - Since the new gTLD’s launched there are approximately 725,000 new gTLD registrations. By my count, URS have been filed against 53 domain names and UDRP’s have been filed against 17 domain names (counts by domain names not cases) So basically 70 domain names out of 725,000 or a 1,000th of 1% of all new gTLD domain names registered have been hit with a URS or UDRP. It should be pointed out that not all of the filed cases went in the favor of the complainant and decisions are still pending. Of course ... read more ...
