Developments in generic top-level domains -
In 2008, the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the international organization which manages and oversees the internet’s domain name system - adopted 19 specific policy recommendations for implementing new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). gTLDs are unique identifiers visible to internet users as a suffix at the end of a domain name, e.g. .biz or .edu. The recommendations were laid down by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), ... read more ...

Econsultancy Takes A look at whether the new gtlds help you rank higher in search -
Marcus Tober wrote an article this morning on Econsultancy.com about whether or not new gtlds help you rank higher in search ? I read econsultancy.com regularly so I as interested to see them covering the new gtlds. Marcus pointed to the fact that Google has categorically denied that there would be any rankings benefit from using the new domain extensions. He also notes the October 2012 EMD algorithm update that downgraded the positive impact that EMD’s had in ranking when the website quality ... read more ...
Will gTLDs help you rank higher in search results? -
The range of generic top-level domains (gTLDs) is expanding to include new options such as .Hotel, .RealEstate and .Berlin.
Will they help you rank higher in searches?
Of course, Google has categorically denied that there would be any rankings benefit from using the new domain extensions.
And this seems to align with its strategy of reducing the impact of keywords in domain names which was very clearly demonstrated with the roll out of the EMD algorithm update in October 2012 (this downgraded the ... read more ...

Is the ICANN New gTLD Program a Draft for a V2 of the Internet? -
A week ago I was discussing the alternative of a European Internet root with an ex-ICANN Board member. The idea that I like to develop in these discussions is to offer end-users a modern and cheaper naming system. Note that it does not mean that the ICANN root is a bad one, it means that a new and upgraded one could cohabit with the existing one.
One will wonder what this article has to do with new gTLDs but considering the creation of an Internet "version 2", offers website and brand owners ... read more ...

ICANN New gTLD Auction Proceeds Approaching $30 Million -
While the debate continues as to whether most new gTLDs are a sound long-term investment for their registry operators, there's no disputing that the program has been an economic boom for ICANN. The 1,930 first round applications each required an application fee of $185,000, which added up to a tidy $357 million. Even after refunds for withdrawn applications ICANN still cleared about a third of a billion dollars from the first round before a single string was delegated.

Trevor Little
Amidst the blitz of Black Friday-themed press releases and stories that have been written this week, one blog taking a unique angle has looked at the role new gTLDs are playing in marketing around the holiday season. Happily, it is more a story of ‘opportunity’ than ‘threat’.
Over the past week, it is fair to say that World Trademark ... read more ...

Experience and Evidence Point to Strong Renewal Rates for New TLDs -
In the tenth month of the revolutionary expansion of generic top-level Internet domains, global registrations in new gTLDs reached more than three million addresses, providing the clearest illustration yet of the strong international appetite for new, relevant addressing options. As we near the first full year of new gTLD availability, focus now shifts to another critical metric — renewals — which we expect to show similar strength based on history and data analysis.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names continues to be sluggish in delegating new gTLDs this month, delegating no new gTLDs since our last post. Anti-Cybersquatting Lessons from IP Strategy -
The post reconsiders a cooperative solution to cybersquatting that I proposed in 2007. I also draw on examples of success and failure of legal actions to protect intellectual property (IP) licensing.
Cybersquatting has gone unabated with the new gTLDs despite the introduction of new protection instruments such as the Trademark Cleaning House (TMCH) database and the availability of Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) services, as well as declarations by registries of their intentions to block unauthorized ... read more ...

Symantec Withdraws their Uncontested Application for New gTLD .AntiVirus - Symantec Corporation has withdrawn their uncontested application for the new gTLD .Antivirus after saying it would become one of their “core assets” in their application.
From its application it appears Symantic wanted to operate the extension on a closed basis.
The Government Advisory Counsel (GAC) to ICANN objected to generic strings from being operated on a closed basis forcing most who had applied to operate on a closed basis to open them up to outside registrations.
Here is part of the application:
