Geographical Name Branding: Dot Patagonia? Dot Amazon?
ADOTAS – When names are borrowed from the Atlas, things happen. Use of Geographic names have always caused some problems for two reasons; one they are in public domain so anyone can use and two they suggest that business is confined to just that geographic area. Many gTLD applicants with strings in contention have already heard about the Applicant Auction, a voluntary private auction for resolving string contention that my colleagues and I are organizing. In this post we'd like to share some updates on our progress.

Leading-Edge Law: Some new developments relating to new domain names -
Changes are coming to generic top-level domain names.
A generic top-level domain name, or gTLD in tech speak, is the part after the last dot, like “.com” or “.net.” We could see gTLDs for a wide variety of interests, such as “.app” and “.med.”
Within the next year or so, perhaps more than 1,000 new generic top-level domains are supposed to launch.
Companies are applying for these new gTLDs.

Horse’s Head in a Trademark Owner’s Bed – CircleID -
Recently, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) unveiled its Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH), a tool it proposes will help fight trademark infringement relating to another of its new programs — generic top level domain (gTLD).
As Lafeber describes, criticism of ICANN's gTLD program and subsequent TMCH database is mounting. Skeptics have noted that given the significant cost of registering a gTLD — the application fee is $185,000 and subsequent annual fees are $25,000 ... read more ...

As early as April 23, 2013, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, better known as ICANN, may launch the long-awaited first set of new top level domain names, or gTLDs, which are the combinations of letters that appear to the right of the “dot” in an internet domain name. This means that rather than the options for domain names being limited to “.com,” “.net,” “.org,” and a handful of other gTLDs, there could soon be hundreds or even thousands of gTLDs available. ... read more ...

Dot-What? – The New GTLDs Are Coming And It’s Time To Understand The … -
Last year, ICANN received 1,917 applications for new Generic Top
Level Domains ("gTLDs") - everything from .app to .zip
and numerous branded and generic strings in between. (Of the 1,917
applications, 754 are currently in "contention sets" due
to similarities, and a few others have been abandoned, so the final
number of new strings will be materially lower than the original
figure.) To help alleviate the concerns of brand owners in
connection with the upcoming onslaught of new strings, ICANN has

GAC Is Concerned About Plural & Singular Generic New gTLD’s -
The Government Advisory Council (GAC) has an open meeting with the ICANN Board late yesterday afternoon in Beijing and shared some of its concerns with the Board.
The GAC is quite concerned about plural and singular generic new gTLD’s and that they weren’t placed into contention sets using .car and .cars as an example.

ICANN Trademark Clearinghouse open for business -
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (“ICANN”) recently opened a Trademark Clearinghouse (“TMCH”) designed to protect registered trademarks. Each time a new generic Top Level Domain (“gTLD”) is launched, trademark owners often find they need to fend off a rash of new cybersquatting domain names that crop up as a result. While there are procedures in place to contest the use of a trademark improperly embedded in a domain name, they can be fairly costly and time-consuming.
Now, ... read more ...
