At ICANN’s Durban meeting the Expert Working Group on gTLD Directory Services (EWG) has held a consultation meeting to solicit community input on its proposals for a WHOIS overhaul. While the EWG was presenting the concept of the Aggregated RDS (ARDS) model, rather than delving into the specifics of implementation, there were a number of interesting questions raised (and occasionally answers provided), particularly for law enforcement and trademark counsel.

As ICANN is holding its meeting in Durban, two more new gTLD applications have been withdrawn reflected on ICANN’s site.
L’Oréal which originally applied for 14 new gTLD, has withdrew its 7th application, all .Brand applications
.REDKEN which is one of L’Oréal product lines which had a prioritization number of 1,228 has been withdrawn.

The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) bid for dotAfrica (.africa) has passed the Internet governing body ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) “Initial Evaluation”. The decision was communicated officially on 12 July 2013.
The ICANN “New gTLD Program Initial Evaluation Report” stated that “Based on the review of your application (it) has passed Initial Evaluation. The application is eligible to proceed to the next step in the Program.”

ICANN’s Christine Willett just gave an update on the New gTLD program from the first session at the ICANN meeting in Durban:
“As Yesterday my team has published results for through priority number 1,200 of the application. so we’ve released 1,100 initial evaluation results.
Over 1,000 applications having passed initial evaluation. we have had 13 applications identified as eligible for extended evaluation.
There have been 49 withdrawn applications out of that first 1,200 prioritized.

The Missing Link in Dotless Domains -
Well more than a year ago, ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee published SSAC 053, its paper on single-label domain names — now referred to in the community as "dotless" domains — advising against their use.
In a robust comment period, the community weighed in on the utility and safety of dotless domains, with some in favor and some opposed. To address the matter, ICANN has commissioned further study of the issue with an eye toward resolving the issue for new gTLD applicants.

ARI Registry Services Develops New Community Test Environment to Assist … -
