Google buys .app domain for $25m - Google has bought the .app domain name for $25m, using it as “a domain space for application developers”. The deal means that Google will be able to create web addresses like “google.app” or “android.app.”  Google has its own domain registry where users can buy their own web addresses. The .app TLD may become available through that route, though Google hasn’t confirmed those plans. Google beat competition from 12 other bidders including Amazon for control of the domain name, meaning ... read more ...

Google Buys Rights to .App Top-Level Domain for $25M - Twenty-five million dollars seems cheap for a top-level domain—bet you didn't think you'd ever see someone say that. Still, when the top-level domain is dot app (.app), and just about every big player in technology has some vested interest in apps, one would have assumed that the ICANN auction for said top-level domain would have gone through the roof. Google prevailed in ICANN's public auction for the top-level domain, paying just a hair over $25M for the rights to .app. It's reportedly the highest ... read more ...

Google purchases .app domain for £16 million - Google has bought the .app domain from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organisation tasked with overseeing the internet. It is part of a new move by ICANN to create new generic Top Level Domains (gTLD) for specific types of websites, like .app, .baby and .tech, all sold at the recent auction. Unsurprisingly, .app was the most valuable in the auction, due to its innate appeal to developers. Having an .app domain could come in handy in the few years, ... read more ...
