Wall Street Journal essay on Drop Catching - The Wall Street Journal published a new article about domain names today. In section B page 1 of today’s Wall Street Journal is an article titled “Drop Catchers Buy and Sell Web Names Others Let Slip”. I have yet to find a free online version of this article at the time of writing. (You can get two weeks free to WSJ Online to see the article immediately here.)The domain community has been talking about this article on the horizon for the past week. The article ... read more ...

eNom ups Club Drop prices again - eNom’s Club Drop service increased its minimum bid again. It seems like if eNom didn’t increase its expired domain prices a couple times a year we’d start to worry if they were OK. Today they announced that the mininum bid for all domains will increase to $30 tomorrow. Currently, you can bid less than $30 but you have to bid $30 to enter into a competitive auction. Frequently, you could bid $20 for a domain and win. But no longer. eNom also announced special ... read more ...

Expiring Domain Market in 2006 - The expired domain market made a big splash in 2005 and this looks to continue in 2006. [Editors note: this is the seventh in a series of posts with results from the 2006 Domain Name Wire survey. The complete results of the survey will be posted soon.] 2005 was the year of the exclusive drop agreement. Instead of domains expiring and dropping for all expired domains services to have a fair shake at catching, most large registrars now have exclusive agreements to ... read more ...

Macau.com sells for $550,000 - The domain name market is off to a roar in 2006. 4 domains have sold for 6 figures in the past 2 weeks, according to DNJournal. Macau, a gambling destination, saw its .com sells for $550,000. Brown.com sold for $300k, Blocks.com for $130k, and Dora.com for $100k. Not bad! A number of expired domains sold for big bucks at SnapNames. Some of the bigger names include AlternativeEnergy.com for $50,138, AutoTransporter.com for $26,000, and LaserShow.com for $24,527. eBay ... read more ...

eNom’s Club Drop creates headaches - eNom’s popular expired domain service can be a headache when participating registrars leave the program. Frequent users of Club Drop know that domains caught by the service are rarely actually registered by eNom. Instead, they are a registered by partners but the domains can still be managed through the eNom account interface. This makes managing domains at the various partner registrars easy. But what happens when a partner decides it no longer wants to participate ... read more ...

Pool.com: I’ll eat my words - Pool.com has auctioned off expired domain Vegans.com for $73,000. This news comes courtesy of DNJournal, and just a day after I wrote about how Pool’s independent drop service was becoming irrelevant. I stand behind my statements, but Pool deserves a pat on the back for this catch! Incidently, Vegans.com was previously registered through registrar Joker.com, which does not have an exclusive drop arrangement with any of the domain catching services. Other sales ... read more ...

Enom to auction of the failing domains - Joining the likes of most major registrars, Enom is now auctioning off expired domains previously owned by its customers. Network Solutions kicked off this “exclusive drop” idea when it signed an exclusive deal with SnapNames. Others quickly followed. Now it’s almost impossible to get a good expiring domain unless it’s through an exclusive drop arrangement. As I’ve discussed in the past, this makes independent drop services like Pool a relic of the past. ... read more ...

Jew.us sells for $29,500 - Jew.us sold for $29,500, the highest “New TLD” sale ever publicly disclosed to DNJournal. Jew.us topped the previous high of $28,086 set by NewYork.info. This sale was big enough to compete with .com domains in the DNJournal sales charts this week. The highest reported sale was Registro.com at $38,000. This domain was grabbed by Pool. It’s nice to see Pool back in the mix. Their drop catching prowess has little effect now that so many registrars have exclusive ... read more ...

SnapNames DNS Hacked - The nameserver where expired domain heavyweight SnapNames resides was temporarily hijacked Wednesday night. Depending on how the nameserver was cached at your ISP, you may have seen a page like this. The page showed an Iranian flag with the sentence “This Site Has Been Hacked For Some Fraud Selling(1)”. It also had an e-mail address DNJournal2005@yahoo.com and mentioned Monte Cahn of Moniker. Of course, neither DNJournal nor Monte had any involvement in the ... read more ...

FlashGames.com sells for $226,950 - Anyone looking for a sign that 2006 will be a good year for domain investors need look no further than this week’s DNJournal sales chart. The year started off with a bang as a two word domain FlashGames.com pocketed $226,950 at Moniker. Moniker also sold CancunHotels.com for $120,000. Sedo almost cracked 6 figures with its sale of CheapGifts.com for $90,000. As I discussed last week, DNJournal changed the format of its charts for 2006. In addition to the regular ... read more ...

Enom adds “premium names” to auctions - eNom has joined a number of domain backordering services that now highlight high quality expiring domains. When users of eNom’s Club Drop system login, they can now view a list of “Premium Domains” as designated by eNom. eNom uses “proprietary tools” to discover which domains have high value. This likely means they check backlinks, Alexa rank, etc. eNom is not the first backorder service to do this. GoDaddy currently has a category of “high value” ... read more ...

Combined with the previously announced Annuity.com sale at $600,000, 2005 went out with a bang. This year saw 9 announced domain name sales of $500,000 or more. This past week also saw Sharks.com sell for $140,000 to the same buyer as Earth.com. Redmond.com expired and was auctioned off on Pool for $62,999. ASB.com sells for $50,000 - Domain buyers didn’t let the holidays slow them down, according to the latest sales figures from DNJournal. The biggest sale of the week was consummated at Sedo, which sold ASB.com for $50,000. That’s a solid number for a three character .com. Expired domains continued to sell for 5 figures. Someone mislaid a $250,000 lottery ticket - If you had a lottery ticket worth $250,000, would you just toss it in the trash? If you had a nice car worth $250k, would you abandon it on the side of the road? That’s basically what the previous owner of A1.com did. The domain expired and was auctioned off for an astonishing $260,250 at SnapNames. Someone left over $250k on the table! It always amazes me when this happens. There must be an explanation. Most likely the current owner changed contact information ... read more ...

Sega risks losing domain name - Sega, maker of popular video games like Sonic the Hedgehog, has let one of its game’s domains expire, as pointed out at Joystiq. Shenmue.com expired on Nov 19. The domain was registered through NetSol, so if it isn’t renewed it will drop through SnapNames. The domain has a pagerank of 5 and 1,270 incoming Yahoo links, and has been online since 1998. Someone needs to keep better records at Sega. Like many large companies, they probably manage their domain names ... read more ...

GoDaddy’s Domain Name Aftermarket adds features - GoDaddy faced lots of criticism when it first launched its domain name aftermarket service, TDNAM. One of the major problems was the long and indeterminate wait period for receiving domains after you won (see GoDaddy aftermarket – I finally got my domain). This has been resolved–the wait period is now fixed at two weeks. You still run the risk of the original registrant renewing the domain, but this chance is small. TDNAM has some added features that make ... read more ...

GoDaddy changes watchful duration for TDNAM failing domains - GoDaddy has apparently changed its waiting period after expiring domain name auctions end before you take ownership of the domain. In a press release the company said the waiting period is only 2 weeks after the domain auction ends. This is much shorter than I’ve experienced in the past (see GoDaddy aftermarket – I finally got my domain). Can anyone verify they are receiving domains within 2 weeks of the auctions? ... read more ...

Riding on Expiring Domains – my opinion - In a recent article posted on CircleID, author “Talented Fool” writes about registrars taking over domains when they enter the expiration grace period in an article titled “Riding on Expiring Domains”. These registrars replace the domain owner’s site with a parking page, and often sell these domains through expiring domain services like SnapNames. Talented Fool suggests that this is a violation of the domain owner’s property rights. I can’t disagree ... read more ...

Midano.com is a price comparison engine for domain name services. It’s like PriceGrabber or Froogle but for domain names. SnapCheck calls for donations - SnapCheck is well known in the expiring domain community for being one of, if not the, best expiring domain resources. It breaks down expiring domains alphabetically, separates out dictionary domains, lists domains by year of initial registration, page rank, Overture count, Alexa rank, length, etc. Not only does it top most paid services, but it’s also FREE. But the growing popularity of SnapCheck is causing a financial burden for its owner. To keep up with ... read more ...

Expired domain name marketplace consolidation - Is Enom’s Club Drop doomed? Can Pool.com survive?
