Expired Domain Report: KeyPoint.com, SellOff.com and more - A weekly roundup of expired domain name sales.
February 8 marked the Chinese New Year. Yes, 2016 is to be the “Year of the Monkey”. After the amazing surge in prices we saw during 2015 – the “Year of the Sheep”, it amuses me to say – the Chinese domain sector went through a predictable downturn that has lasted 2 months so far.
Partly to allay worries about stagnant or falling prices, domain investors in the West have clung to this New Year holiday like a life raft, assuring one ... read more ...

Not Quite What You're Thinking: Tesila.com (Expired Domain Report) - Here are expired domain names that sold within the past week.
Here’s something you’re going to see more and more as brands contend with the vagaries of foreign pronunciation and transliteration: Tesila.com ($14.0k). As you must have guessed, that price was based on an electric car company. But it’s not a typo.
In Romania, there is a town called Teșila – evidently too small to appear in the list of cities with 2000+ residents. Small size notwithstanding, you can book a luxury ski hotel ... read more ...

What domain names to buy this week - Here are some good domain names you can order this week.
Back in the day, I did posts about what upcoming expired domain names to backorder. I haven’t done these in a while, but my recent post about selling domains on NameJet sent about 400 clicks to NameJet in 24 hours. That, along with some requests, made me think there’s some value to this.
For example, did you know that LegalTender.com was recently on a Sedo auction? I doubt it. Only three people bid in the auction.
With that in mind, I’m ... read more ...

Taco Bell divulgence Quesalupa during Super Bowl & Quesalupa.com in tentative delete. - Matching domain name is about to drop.
It looks like Taco Bell’s Super Bowl 50 ad this evening will unveil the Quesalupa.
As the name implies, it’s a chalupa filled with cheesy goodness (and probably a bit of heartburn).
I assumed Taco Bell would snap up the Quesalupa.com domain name ahead of running its 2016 Super Bowl commercial. Although Taco Bell doesn’t own the domain name, someone is about to snap it up.
Quesalupa.com is currently in pending delete status. Someone at Yum! Brands might ... read more ...

CHIPs, Numbers, and other lapsed domain name sales - Joseph Peterson analyzes the past week of expired domain name sales.
Once again, China tops these charts – but not in the customary way. Rather than numerical domains, 4-letter “CHIPs”, or even Chinese Pinyin, we’re looking at an English domain about China: ChinaTech.com.
The auction outcome itself ($4.7k) isn’t at all unusual, since domains that can serve as upgrades for multiple existing websites often fetch high prices. And that’s the case, based on brands like these:
China-Tech.com
ChinaTech.com.tw
ChinaTechNews.com
AllChinaTech.com
ChinaTech.com.vn
ChinaTechSourcing.co.uk
etc.

Expired Domain Report: NNN.net sells for $7.2k - A look back at the past week in expired domain name sales.
SnapNames turned in the top expiry result this week: 489.net ($7.2k). Such 3-digit .NETs are fairly rare in these charts, since only 1000 exist and those few rarely expire. The last time we saw one was 9 months ago, before the Chinese surge in prices; and it’s interesting to note how little the value has changed between these 2 NNN.net sales – quite unlike the steep appreciation in categories like LLLL.net, where 160,000 “CHIPs” ... read more ...

Toot.com for $31.8k and other lapsed domain name sales - Toot.com leads expired domain name sales.
Close observers will have noticed the absence of SnapNames results from my last article, which only covered NameJet expired domains. In the week since NamesCon, most of us have drifted homeward and settled back into our normal routines. So this time both auction houses are represented in the charts – 7 days for SnapNames, 5 days for NameJet.
By far the biggest expired domain auction was TOOT.com ($31.8k). Most of us will recognize that as an English ... read more ...

SnapNames goes to China - A report from the CNNIC Partner Conference in Guangzhou.
Tom Jennings and Barb Sher (SnapNames) pose with Daniel Zhang from XinnetDomain name marketplaces are making a lot of money from Chinese buyers these days (more on that later), and it makes sense for these companies to visit with their buyers.
After NamesCon, Tom Jennings and Barb Sher of SnapNames traveled to China to visit with customers. Director of Business Development for SnapNames Tom Jennings filed this report:

Expired Domain Report – NamesCon edition - Here’s what you might have missed in the expired domain market.
Last week, much of the domain industry’s attention converged at NamesCon, including a live auction arranged by NameJet + RightOfTheDot. (Quite a successful auction, I might add.) Yet for all that buzz, in the background business went on as usual. After all, domainers don’t stop paying attention to valuable expired domains simply because registrars have a few new features to unveil! Here’s what sold at NameJet during that ... read more ...

Kabei.com, JunGong.com lead lapsed domain report - [Editor’s note: this Expired Domain Report normally would have been published at the end of last week. It was delayed due to the New Year holiday.]
After a pair of 5-figure Chinese Pinyin domains topped the previous chart, my first reaction this time around was to assume the same thing had happened. The second highest item, JunGong.com ($8.1k), is Chinese: jùn gōng (竣工) means “project completion”. However, I can find no Chinese match for Kabei.com ($10.1k); and at this stage the buyer’s ... read more ...

BenPao.com during $25.7k in Chinese-dominated week for lapsed domains - Chinese buyers pick up the top spots last week.
Thanks to mulled cider and holiday caroling, this article appears later than usual. Fa la la la la! While these auctions took place the week prior to Christmas (December 16-22), we decided against publishing on Christmas Day.
As you can see, China came back with a vengeance. 10 sales over $2k were 4-letter .COMs, proving that category hasn’t been completely diverted from the expiry cycle after all – not yet. As many as 17 of the top 30 ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report – Chewbacca, Adorno… - Any bets: Who needs to be more frequently Flead.com ($211) – an ewok or Chewbacca? Seeing Adorno.com ($2.8k) in the charts this week, I’m sorely tempted to bore everybody with an essay on the philosopher, Theodor Adorno, who’ll never let me forget that “the splinter in your eye is the best magnifying glass”. He’d take a fairly dim view of domaining. Come to think of it, every other sentence the man wrote was a yelp in response to some metaphysical flea bite. So Adorno beats ewoks ... read more ...

Constipated.com, Roper.com and some-more lapsed domain name sales - Last time, China was conspicuously absent from the high end of NameJet / SnapNames expired domain auctions; and I proposed 1 theory as to why. Since then, Chinese-style domains have made a comeback; but they’re clearly playing second fiddle.
China placed 3 sales among the top 10, ranking #4, #5, and #6. In the top 20, another 5. Reaching out to the top 30, you’ll find just 3 more Chinese domains. That’s a fairly uniform 37% spread – 32% by spending. Compare that to China’s presence ... read more ...

Where did China go? - Where did China go? We’ve grown accustomed to seeing China claim around 40% of the top 20 sales; and Chinese-style domains usually rank very high in these charts – #2 last week, #1 the week before, etc. stretching far back into 2014. This time, however, none of the top 16 results are Chinese – none.
Why? Human error is 1 explanation. My sampling at NameJet is never 100% complete. But that limitation affects all my weekly reports, and I would expect spotty data collection to cause ... read more ...

259999.com sells for $15,100 (and other lapsed domain name sales) - Who says there’s nothing new UnderTheSun.com ($3.8k)? Two months ago, a pair of 6-digit numerical domains topped these charts. But those headline-making expired auctions – $7.5k and $7.3k – fail to match last week’s $15.1k sale … even added together! Has the entire asset class doubled in price after 2 short months? Well, that can’t be inferred just by looking at a few peak sales. But it’s safe to say appreciation in this sector has been – hmm, so many adjectives to choose from ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name Report (It's a large one) - The Western domain market takes home gold, silver, and bronze medals this week. You’ll see a pair of 2-word English category killers and a short, word-based brandable. Wheelz.com ($7.1k) covers many existing brands – for niches as diverse as wheel chairs, roller skates, tires, and automobiles. Part of that domain’s value is intrinsic; but much of the bidding competition for such brandables is based on preexisting brands, any of which might buy. You might root for the motivational wheel-chair ... read more ...

October: A Big Month for NameJet - …And China drove the growth
October was probably NameJet’s best month overall. Remember, the market place set a record in July and then superseded it in September with cumulative sales from auctions over $2k reaching first $1.05 then $1.32 million. Last month ranks third behind those, but it’s just 2% shy of second place. Crucially, whereas the other 2 months each derived more than half their reported revenue from a single sale ($555k then $694k), October’s top auction ($142k) leaves bragging ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: Over 200 formula from past week - China dominated expired domain auctions last week, but this week the West reasserted itself. As many as 8 out of the top 20 auctions (40%) can still be laid on China’s doorstep; but previously the figure was 12 / 20 (60%). Since J-C.com ($4.2k) was purchased by someone in St. Louis, Missouri, that means the top Chinese sale – a 6-digit numerical domain – ranks only #7. Normally China wins at least 1 medal: gold, silver, or bronze. Unless this trend persists, I wouldn’t read too much ... read more ...

Expired Domain Report: Three Cheers for China! - Once again, China dominates expired domain name buying.
And the Chinese feeding frenzy continues. Those who hype have cranked their hype knobs up to 11 in order to take advantage of the moment. Strike while the iron is hot! Oh, but this market demand is real nevertheless. Domains will probably never be more liquid than these China-favored categories are today; and prices (for now at least) are consistently high … possibly still climbing.

JinSe.com for $30k and other lapsed domain name sales - A weekly roundup of expired domain name sales.
59 bidders saw a golden opportunity when JinSe.com expired, yet it was the enthusiasm of just 2 of them that lifted it above $10.1k to finish 3 times higher at $30.2k. That made this piece of Chinese Pinyin NameJet’s top expired domain auction during the past week. Oh, in case you haven’t guessed already, jīn sè (金色) = “golden”. It also happens to be the name of a Korean actress.
Think about this … Had 1 out of the 2 high bidders ... read more ...

Australian domain marketplace adult in arms over Netfleet behest scandal - Australia gets its own type of “Halvarez”.
The Australian domain community is still reeling from a controversy that emerged in late September. Haven’t heard? Then you’re not an Aussie. But if private bids are shared to attract competing bidders, then that matters everywhere.

Expired Domain Report: Total Number Domination! - Numeric domains take the lead in this week’s Expired Domain Report.
A few days ago, while reviewing the month of September, I measured China’s contribution to high-end sales at NameJet. (Hint: It wasn’t small.) And in my previous weekly article, I discussed the ongoing appetite for 6-digit .COMs and other numerical domains that “traders are obsessed with” these days.
Well, folks, the market is gluttonous. This past week, between NameJet and SnapNames, numerics took up three out ... read more ...

Expired Domain Name Report: Over 200 names - Which do domainers need – a PriceTracker.com or a ProblemGamblingGuide.com? Both! But we’re incorrigible gamblers; so naturally we spent more to learn how to spend ($7.4k) than how not to spend ($1.6k). Indeed, PriceTracker.com was last week’s top expired domain at NameJet. Obviously, the domain can aim at a mass e-commerce audience. So if you’ve been hankering for an electric back scratcher that hums Brahms’s lullaby, track it till the blowout sale!

HaoZhan.com for $27.3k and other lapsed domain name sales - A weekly wrap of expired domain name sales.
One reading of HaoZhan.com ($27.3k) is “warlike” (好战 / hào zhàn). China fortunately isn’t – not compared to the USA – but its domain buyers sure are aggressive lately! At least 3 of the top 4 expired domain auctions at NameJet last week fit the profile: Pinyin, LLLL, numeric. Whether or not Chinese bidders won the auctions, they would have contributed to those final prices. .COM, of course. What about hyphens, though? That’s the million ... read more ...
