Google files obvious app for organisation buying -
Application for “online marketplace” describes group buying system.
Long before Groupon took the idea of group buying of services and gift certificates mainstream, many people have tried group buying for physical goods. Remember Mercata, which shut down in the .com bust?
Now Google has filed a patent application for an “online marketplace”, which is effectively a group buying marketplace.

Elk.com and INW.com strike with UDRPs -
Two three letter .com domains have been hit with UDRP filings.
Australian fashion accessories company ELK Accessories Pty Ltd. has filed a UDRP case in an effort to get the domain name Elk.com. The company’s web site is elkaccessories.com.au.
Since this seems like such a long shot attempt to snag a three letter domain name (that is also a word), I assumed the whois history for this domain would show that perhaps the company used to own it and it was stolen.

iPad series names are unexpected value less -
iPad3.com will still get a lot of traffic, but Apple just threw out that naming convention.
Apple was supposed to announce the iPad 3 today.
But it didn’t.
Instead, it launched the “new iPad”. No number after it. No other designation, like iPad HD.
What people will end up calling it is still up in the air, but the value of the domain iPad3.com just went down.
So did the other iPad#.com domain names.
One year ago today I wrote about how squatters had picked ... read more ...

Paul Keating gets solitary win in Auto-Owners cases -
Panel rules that AutoOwner.com registrant can keep domain name.
In January I wrote about how Auto-Owners Insurance filed four UDRP cases against owners of domain names it said infringed its mark.
The first two decided cases went in favor of the insurance company, but domain attorney Paul Keating has reversed that trend.
Keating successfully defended the registrant of AutoOwner.com. The panel found that the insurance company didn’t show registration and use in bad ... read more ...
.Co goes large during SXSW -
.Co will be in your face at SXSW interactive.
Say what you will about .co (and I know a lot of you will), but you have to give the TLD credit for doing more than anyone else to create a brand around a TLD. It’s a model for anyone who wants to launch a new top level domain next year.
Case in point: the company’s presence at SXSW later this week.
SXSW Interactive is the perfect venue for a company trying to court startups, entrepreneurs, and tech companies.

A Customer Say Sedo Allows Users To Edit Listings Of Domains They Don’t Own - This morning I logged in to sedo and was surprised to notice that I had access to somebody ELSE’s domain listings in addition to some of my own.
While sedo was in the middle of assuring me that these were only “pending listings”, I changed the price of Ability.info (not my domain) from over $6,000 to just $100 and proceeded to buy it. However, since Ability.info was “mine” (it isn’t, remember), Sedo wouldn’t allow the transaction to proceed. Sedo didn’t seem to understand why this ... read more ...
Would A New gTLD Operator Have a Marketing Advantage Over .com. .net., org & Others If They Were Offshore? - Wired.com published a story today entitled “Uncle Sam: If It Ends in .Com, It’s .Seizable”.
The story goes on to talk about what all of us in the domain industry already know, that if a domain registry is a US corporation, domain names under the extension can be seized by the US government.
Those include .com, .net. org, biz, .us, .tv .name and .cc all of which are operated by Registries located in the United States

UDRP cybersquatting complaints fall, rate during all time low -
Number of cybersquatting arbitration cases fall in 2011.
Earlier today Kevin Murphy opined about WIPO’s arbitration numbers from last year, basically saying that the data don’t prove an increase in cybersquatting.
In fact, it turns out anyone who wants to use UDRP numbers to talk about cybersquatting needs to say that they show the practice is waning.
That’s for a couple reasons. The big one is that in absolute numbers the number of UDRP cases fell last year. ... read more ...
What was your biggest domain niche mistake? -
Have you flushed money down the toilet on themed domain registrations?
Yesterday I wrote about how there’s still a sliver of hope for the prefab domain names I registered many years ago. I thought the registrations would pay off, but now I realize it’s going to be a long time (if ever).
I’ve made other mistakes with things I thought would be hot but they didn’t pan out. I bought a bunch of Wimax.com domains, only to see Wimax lose out to LTE as a standard. ... read more ...

Prefab domain investments competence compensate off someday -
So you’re saying there’s a chance…
In numerous interviews I’ve discussed my investment in domain names related to prefab housing. I’m not talking about cheap prefab; instead I’ve gone long on modern prefab housing.
But the housing boom hurt the modern prefab industry pretty hard. Financing a prefab home can prove challenging and alternative financing got hit hard in the mortgage crises.
Another drawback is that prefab housing still generally costs a lot ... read more ...
