Demand Media is Down 55% from Its IPO, But It’s Not Alone -
Majority of 2011 U.S. IPOs are under water.
If you managed to buy Demand Media’s stock at the $17 offering price in January, you’ve taken a 55% hit. The stock closed today at $7.62.
More likely if you bought on the first day you paid north of $20 for the stock.
But is this fall because the company is weak or is it just a case of bad timing? (or good for those that got to sell there shares in January?)
Data tracker Dealogic says 63% of U.S. initial public offerings ... read more ...
“Book” + Social Networking = Trademark Delay -
Facebook asks trademark office for more time to oppose trademarks.
If you want the U.S. Patent and Trademark office to approve a trademark for your social networking site that includes the word “book”, you can expect a challenge.
That’s because Facebook is repeatedly filing requests with the trademark office to extend the time it has to oppose for good cause these trademark registrations.
For example, there’s dart player social network Dartbook. Facebook filed ... read more ...

Haunted house files suit to stop transfer and asks that trademark be canceled.
The owner of the domain name Screams.com has filed a lawsuit (pdf) to halt the imminent transfer of his domain name following an adverse UDRP ruling.
Last week I wrote about how Screams.com owner Cutting Edge Haunted House in Fort Worth, Texas, lost a UDRP to another haunted house in the area. Cutting Edge registered the domain name 14 years before the UDRP case was filed.

Why Does General Electric Own The Domain Name UpYourButt.net? - The domain name UpYourButt.net is owned by GE.
Yes the General Electric Company.
The domain was once registered to Universal Studios which is owned by NBC, which in turn is owned by GE.
The domain name does not resolve.
The domain’s registrar is the corporate brand consultant cscglobal.com
Its a pretty strange name to see under the control of a company in the Dow Jones average and under management at a corporate registrar.
Wonder if they are going to apply for upyourbutt.xxx?

.XXX Sunrise Registrations “Comfortably Exceeded” Expectations -
A long way to go but numbers already look strong for .xxx sunrise registrations.
The .xxx sunrise registration period is less than a week old, but ICM Registry CEO Stuart Lawley told Domain Name Wire “I think it is safe to say that we have ‘comfortably exceeded’ our internal estimates” via email today.
Lawley goes on to write:
The response to the unprecedented media coverage last week was immediate and strong and we are surprised at the level of applications ... read more ...
WTF? Acorn.tv mislaid in UDRP. -
Hold on tight to your generic .tv domains!
Sometimes I read UDRP decisions and just start shaking my head.
That’s the case with Acorn.tv.
Keep in mind that UDRP was created for clear cut cases of cybersquatting. Acorn.tv is not a clear cut case of cybersquatting and should have remained with the owner.
Acorn Media Group, Inc, which filed the complaint, makes home video products. That apparently means that anything with “acorn” and the .tv extension belongs to ... read more ...

Gaz.com Sells for $55K on Sedo: Is The Russian Automaker The Buyer? - The domain name GAZ.com just sold on Sedo for 40,000 Euro’s or around $55,000 on one bid in an auction that just ended
My pick as the buyer of the domain, but just a guess is Gaz automotive group out of Russia
According to their site, “GAZ GROUP IS RUSSIA’S LARGEST AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING HOLDING” company.
You can read more about this company here
If it is the Russian automaker then its a steal.
If not the Russian company than there are some gaming related uses for the term Gaz so it could ... read more ...

One of our domains, GoPost.com was sold by Sedo.com for $25K.
That domain is also in escrow and we will have to see who the buyer is.

ICANN’s Enron-esque Math Shows a Loss on New TLDs -
Numbers don’t make a lot of sense to me.
ICANN has released a projected cash flow and profit and loss statement from the new top level domain name program. It has me scratching my head.
The non-profit presents two sets of numbers.
First is an overall program cashflow statement. The program considers only 500 applications (which is near the low end of what most people are estimating). It also doesn’t show any revenue from auctions. To be fair, estimating auction ... read more ...
Trademark Holders Go to 93-1 in .Co Disputes -
.Co domain name disputes almost always found in favor of complainant.
Filers of UDRP cases against .co domain names are now 93-1 at World Intellectual Property Organization.
These cases have all been filed since .co was relaunched last year. I’ve counted “terminated” cases as wins for the complainant since an amicable transfer is the typical reason for a case to be terminated.
This doesn’t include numbers for National Arbitration Forum cases since that group ... read more ...

10 Years Later -
This isn’t a blog post about where I was and all of that stuff. We all have those stories.
This is just another reminder to think about what’s important in life. After 9/11, people decided to spend more time with family and reconnecting with old friends. They went out of there way to help people, even complete strangers.
This has worn off over the past decade.
I was reminded of this when the Dow fell 300 points on Friday. It was painful to watch. But did it really ... read more ...
