GoDaddy comment government gets an upgrade - GoDaddy has upgraded it’s account management system. (Update 10/15 – see comment from GoDaddy; this feature is being rolled out in phases but all customers can access the new account manager). One of my biggest complaints about GoDaddy has been its user interface for managing domains and features. GoDaddy offers so many products now that its interface has become clunky. I logged into my account today and it looks like GoDaddy finally got the message and hired ... read more ...

Sedo to launch auctions - Domain marketplace Sedo will add auctions to its system. Domainers will often tell you they prefer Sedo or Afternic better. These are the two heavyweights in the aftermarket community. They also have radically different market mechanisms. At Sedo you negotiate with one buyer at a time, entering an offer-counter offer arrangement similar to buying a house. Afternic is styled more like an auction, where you receive escalating bids and then can trigger a fixed-term ... read more ...

Landmark Business.com sale: “only” $2M - The actual value of the landmark business.com sale was only $2M, not $7.5M. Until recently, Business.com was considered the highest domain name sale ever at a reported $7.5M. (There have since been higher domain sales, pushing business.com down the list.) But it turns out the $7.5M sale of Business.com wasn’t that much after all. It wasn’t a cash deal, and was for $7.5M in illiquid stock. We knew it wasn’t worth the full $7.5M, but we had no idea how much ... read more ...

Forbes essay mentions domain name companies - The October 16 issue of Forbes has an article that mentions several domain companies. The most recent edition of Forbes has an article titled “The Google Industrial Complex” that mentions several domain name companies: Firms such as Internet Real Estate (sic) and IREIT buy up thousands of Web sites with commonplace domain names such as africanamericans.com and mutualfunds.com, then load them with Google ads. They’re valued on total expected return, just the ... read more ...

EURid releases 74,000 doubtful names - EURid has unfrozen 74,000 domains that were part of a dispute against domain warehousers. In July, EURid relented to outside pressure as it suspended the registration of 74,000 domains. They claimed these domains were registered directly by three registrars, not on behalf of clients, which violated EURid’s terms. But the registrars have won this round. According to an article in International Herald Tribune, A Beglian court last week ruled that EURid must pay ... read more ...

.CC domains find their cost point - A handful of .cc one word domains have sold recently at Afternic, setting a price point at about $100. .cc domains, the country code domain for Cocos Islands, have never gained favor among web users. Initially they cost a bundle to register, but now you can register them for about the same price as mainstream domains. Owners of .cc domains that are wondering about their value just need to look at a handful of recent sales at Afternic: actors.cc $75 drinks.cc $75 sticker.cc ... read more ...

Gambling domains out-of-favor - The U.S. is cracking down on internet gambling, causing the value of gambling domains to drop. A number of domainers have been selling off their portfolios of gambling domains over the past few months. First, some advertising feeds dropped support for gambling domains. Many major advertising services, like Google, already do not promote gambling. Second, the U.S. government is cracking down on internet gambling. Internet gambling has long been a questionable area ... read more ...

September Domain Parking Results - TrafficClub remains strong, SedoPro shines. As I do every month, I’m providing you with the results of my domain parking in September to help you determine where to park your domains. This month I’m adding stats from SedoPro and Dotzup to my normal TrafficClub stats. As a caveat, note that certain domains perform better with different parking services. This isn’t meant to be a scientific study of one parking service compared to another; merely a real world ... read more ...

U.S. loosens hold on ICANN - The United States Commerce Department has renewed its agreement with ICANN, but has installed provisions to give ICANN more autonomy. The issue of the United State’s control over the internet and ICANN has been heated over the past couple years. Although the United States was instrumental in inventing the internet and web as we know it, many countries have become cocerned that the U.S. has too much control over what is now an institutional medium. The Commerce ... read more ...
